DIY Gunshot Treatment on Chicago’s South Side

It's no secret that Chicago has become the center of America’s gun violence epidemic over the last few years. In 2017 alone, the city had 3,457 shooting victims- - 246 of which were children. To make matters worse, Chicago’s South Side - where many of these shootings take place- doesn’t even have a trauma center with the ability to treat adult shooting victims.
To help combat these shortfalls, a grassroots community organization known as Ujimaa Medics has stepped in. Ujimaa Medics trains local kids as young as 12 on how to treat gunshot wounds and how to manage crowds at the scene of a shooting.
VICE's Rodney Lucas traveled to Chicago to meet one of the organization's co-founders and see their training firsthand.

Chicago has very strict gun laws hence why civilians are unable to protect themselves. Chicago is 100% proof that gun control in America makes no difference at all other than making innocent people easier targets.

srspower you're missing the point why is it that easy to access guns ? If they had gun control there wouldn't be this many guns circulating. In places with gun control there literally isn't nearly the amount of guns in the country.

Anyone complaining that Chicago is a gun-free City doesn't understand the impact of all of the surrounding areas being so liberal with their gun rights. One City's gun laws can't stop guns from coming into a community the surrounding areas have to support or the laws only benefit the criminals.

I'm not against the expression "passed away" but when someone dies because they were refused by one hospital and had to go to another, that's not passed away. That's thrown away.

It’s common place if a hospital is unable to properly treat a patient that they transfer them elsewhere. I love in a very affluent area and even we only have two trauma centers across three very large counties. With that being said I’d assume they didn’t look at it case by case and just pushed it through the system as “we don’t have a trauma center send them across the city because they have one” when if they’d put more thought into it they could have realized the severity. Or better yet, add a trauma center to the post dangerous side of one of the most dangerous cities in the country

@@ryanbaker1207 as a medical professional myself- they will divert a patient to another ED trauma center, BUT the paramedics call 1st to give the ED "report " if the patient is critical and declining fast they can NOT turn that patient away. The same thing with ED diversion. Whole ED's are closed when they reach capacity. Unless a patient is critical and they r the closest. A big problem is in certain parts of Chicago and other inner cities they don't have $ for paramedics salaries, only EMS. The difference between EMS and paramedics is night and day. And the difference can be life or death. A paramedic can give life saving medicine and perform procedures. An EMS can't, they basically can monitor the patient and give VERY BASIC 1st aid. It's terrible really. All cities should be able to employ paramedics. It's just not the reality 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@lukefurey1402 ur uneducated and it's sad that u think this way without learning the reality. If u have ZERO insurance, the hospital staff will ask u or ur family if u happen to be incapacitated financial questions. Then the STATE picks up the tab. So, no the uninsured r NOT bankrupting the hospitals. Its mostly those WITH insurance that bankrupt the hospitals cuz they don't pay their deductibles to the hospital that they owe. I can't tell u how many suburban soccer moms I've had to call that owe thousands! And I always get- I'm NOT paying anything I have insurance! What good is insurance if I have to pay$?!?! I always end up having to give them a lesson in insurance, deductibles,co-pays and in & out of network providers. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So now that I educated U on the subject as well u can stop spewing misinformation!😊

Although it is so sad that it has come to this for the black, minority and other youth groups of Chicago and many other cities around the US., I congratulate you for doing this. I am a white, middle class woman from Canada that studied in Health Sciences and Paramedic studies but I feel for your plight. No one should have to face such violence. It is HORRID that you even have to do this and that police officers don't even have to offer basic first aid care in a shooting (if this is in fact true). Education is key! Educate yourselves and I applaud you for raising awareness and learning the basics of first aid. It really horrifies me that you all have to even do this and face this on a daily basis but I guess it's a fact/reality of life. It shouldn't be. Racism, hate, crooked politicians and poverty are a wicked and vicious cycle. Know that not all people are ignorant of your plight and that we are hearing you.❤🥀 (Thank you Vice for sharing this)

A few small changes and minimal amount of funding could have an immense impact on the quality of life for these kids and young adults. As someone who works in Trauma and who also teaches a similar class called #stopthebleed, I hope folks will take the time to learn how to use tourniquets and basic first aid. You never know when someone near you might need help between car accidents, gun shots, or even falls the average lay person has the ability to save a life. Stop the Bleed classes are free and taught at most trauma centers nationwide. We teach kids as young as 10 and ever local senior citizens!

I think the most heartbreaking part of this was when that woman matter-of-factly told a room full of kids “don’t talk and move at the same time [to police]. It may trigger aggression.” This is how you deal with bears or rabid dogs. Police are behaving like animals toward these kids, so consistently that dealing with it is built into the curriculum.

I’m so baffled to where American tax payers money goes! It doesn’t go towards benefits because the poor are still very much poor and starving, It doesn’t go towards health care, because you guys have to pay that urself or thru insurance, it doesn’t go towards schools, because if you’re living in a low income neighbourhood and don’t have access to other schools out of the area, chances are funding is low. It doesn’t go towards the police department, because they still have very very high gun crime, drug crime, the police are brutalising civilians and minimal action has been placed! It’s got to a point where people have to video tape every encounter with the police just Incase it’s needed to evidence later on! I used to dream of moving from England to America but growing up has made me realise that’s far from a place where I would feel comfortable living in! Can’t even send kids to school without having the background fear that they may not come home! That whole place is crazy! Lost! Yall need to start asking a LOT of questions! It’s almost like if you don’t have ££ there you’re screwed

I understand that every country and continent has it’s fair share of problems but the things that go down in America and is over looked is almost like a third world country! If someone would like to argue and say I’m wrong for this opinion, start by naming at least one 1st world country that has to deal with EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE PROBLEMS IVE JUST LISTED. Not one problem .. but every single one of them and then we can continue.

If departments and officers weren’t so worried about getting sued there’d be more incentive to include first aid in police protocol. Unfortunately we live in a society where giving CPR can be a huge financial risk, so much so it’s hard to blame someone for waiting on paramedics. You can barely sneeze around a dying person and not get sued by some scumbag attorney.

Chicago actually has very mid level gun restrictions, lower than New York and California to name some other larger cities, and guns do not have to be bought in that city, or state. I will also promise you that there are criminals who buy guns legally. It would be great if it was so black and white, but Chicago being used as evidence for NRA and GOP regurgitation is invalid.

I feel bad for these kids, they stand a greater chance of being murdered than they do graduating college or getting married. Now these are the few who actually put forth the effort to attend this program, there’s thousands more who simply don’t care or they just don’t feel comfortable. It’s very important that kids have guidance, structure and discipline at a very young age, my parents kept me so busy when I was a kid that didn’t have time to think about getting into trouble and I was a terrible lier, my father would tell me “I was lying to myself”. My folks didn’t spoil us with material things, but they did give us the tools we needed to stay out of trouble and be successful. I pray for these kids often and if I ever get the opportunity to reach out and help them I would not hesitate, I’m strict but I’m honest and fair, that’s what they need.

10:25 That's funny, I moved into a slightly more dangerous part of Chicago at the beginning of July a couple years ago (a guy was stabbed with a broken bottle first day I arrived almost died - he ended up being a nice enough guy though), that night I thought I was hearing gun shots right on my block...but they were fireworks. It's funny on retrospect, but goddamn when you hear it it scares the hell out of you if you really can't tell. You literally slide along the wall up to the window like your solid snake or something. I really feel for the good kids who have to grow up with that. Can't imagine being a 5 year old when your imagination is so vivid ahh it just sucks. These people are awesome. I've got so much respect for kids who don't break bad with all that stress and pressure. I don't think it's coincidence that heroin and alcohol are so huge in that environment, we've got to address the violence to address the epidemic of dependence in this country.

When a person shot by another won't even snitch on that person who tried to kill them, you have a culture is deeply fucked up. And then you ask cops and society to solve it. There is no solving that. The people who create it need to solve it or destroy themselves in the process.

First off 50% of the citizens don't pay any tax. This segment of the population receives welfare payments, Medicaid, aid to dependent children, food stamps, unemployment insurance, public housing and numerous other subsidies and assistance programs that eat up billions of tax dollars. The vast majority of this group never finishes high school and when in school most perform dramatically below grade level. A large percentage are functionally illiterate. The average age for pregnancy in this group is 17 years and only about 13% are married. Most have very little involvement with the fathers of there children after giving birth. Drugs are endemic in this population segment as is alcohol abuse. Lack of education, limited verbal skills, gang tattoos/apparel, drug usage and arrest records make finding a job next to impossible. Raised in single parent homes by mothers with limited education, minimal parenting skills and dependent on the government for subsistence doesn't prepare children to become productive members of society. Many turn to gangs to fill the void in their lives. Gang culture revolves around drugs and violence plus sociopathy is common, engendering remorseless mayhem with little to no social stigma. A huge problem with no simple solutions.

This is why government assistance is lower within the black community.. Selling drugs doesn't make it right of course.
