Another option is to buy a coat with a zip in zip out liner to install all the heat panels without having to cut anything which also allows you to use your coat through warmer seasons. Vests are a good option. Don’t forget to put your chocolate bar in a non heated pocket, I know someone who might have done that.👍⚡️

I can't thank you enough. Colder weather is here and I've been looking at heated jackets so I can keep riding the bike without putting on/taking off multiple layers throughout my ride and stops. But, I refuse to pay for a cheap one from amazon or expensive one from Milwaukee. Will be starting this project today.

One small thing I think I'm going to do: I think I'm loosing heat out of the back of the jacket as the shell is thin. I think putting a extra piece of fabric, thin insulation or maybe piece of reflective blanket on the backside of the heating element would help retain that heat.

You seem to be informed about most stuff but in case you hadn't come across this, the adhesive on iron on hem tape seems to be (and I'm pretty sure is) the same as hot melt glue and might make a good alternative to shoe goo - I was thinking you could have glued the on/off button on with it. (In my experience It's probably stronger at bonding fabric than most other uses). But yeah, $200 for a heated work jacket when you can make your own for around $20-$40, you'd be crazy not to. Great idea!

Did this years ago with stick-on velcro strips, and it worked fine, plus the pads were removable. You're actually still working too hard! No cutting or modification of the jacket required. You can get 'permanent' stick-on velcro that you can still remove later if you really want to, but put the soft side on the jacket and the prickly side on the heaters, and the jacket will be nice with or without them in place.

Great idea! I just ordered a similar product from Amazon. The one you listed shows as sold out so I'm guessing that a lot of us liked your idea. My son worked as a chimney sweep and in the winter he was working up on snow covered roofs. He bought one of the commercial heated jackets and absolutely loves it. I was tempted to get one but couldn't justify the expense....until now.

Love the pooch wearing the jacket at the end haha. Cool little project. The reason those milwaukee, dewalt, etc jackets dont seem to work all that good, when you wear them, its obviously cold out, when its cold out, you wear a hoodie or something heavy under the jacket, now you that hoodie blocking the heat from getting to your core. The vests are the best because they sit tight on your body and you put a heavy jacket over them so it holds all the heat in. But definitely the best is making your own. Cool project man.

I was fortunate to get a M12 heated jacket as a Christmas gift years ago. I don't use it very often. But in those extremely cold temperatures during the winter. I wear the heated jacket under my larger winter coat and it's toasty even in -40c wind chill! I just got a pair of heated work gloves for Christmas last month and they're great for working on things outside or when I'm splitting firewood in the cold. the gloves are not so great on bike rides in the bitter cold. But I plan to make a pair of mitts to fit over the gloves to help reduce the harshly cold wind off my hands!

I once thought of doing this by salvaging the heater element from a heated car seat from a car in the junk yard... can get seats at a local junkyard for under 50 each. Then suply it with 12 volts. This is alot nicer way of making one of these. Thanks

Great video👍 Simplifying an often overcomplicated design. Just a quick idea, before you install heated pads you could silicone protect the jacket to make it completely waterproof. It's a straight forward process. Then you'll have the ultimate winter jacket.

Except when I was in a truck cab I froze myself in an uncouth manner on machines with no cab and no heat with NO warm clothes. My WW-2 SeaBee Uncle was an iron worker and had Carhartt coveralls and coats. I got a set of insulateds from a cousin when his brother retired and between them and a hoodie I never did even think of a chill. I even had my Army field jacket with liner but it was nothing against the Carhartts. Now I sit inside and look at the fire in the stove and wait till I can mow grass again. You need to make Ginger a jacket. God Bless and a Brand New Year for yall! And I had a hooded short Carhartt coat for concrete hauling!

I froze or baked most of my life before dry cabs except in trucks but the old Macks would make an oven out of a cooler. Try pouring curb mix looking into the sun. A SW L O W go with a curbing machine and a really stiff mix and a long time. I got a thermometer and coming back to get another load with every window open it was 124 degrees running 55. Crusher life was unreal. The only thing without a dry cab was a D6R LGP and it was an open cab. I ran a 980G and a 115 Z-IV or a rigid frame truck. All had heaters, a.c and a radio I never listened to. Draglines would freeze you solid. Never owned Carhartts till I didn't need them and those were given to me. I started in 68 or 69 on a road job pulling a roller. Been a long time.@@dustinoutlaw9453

Wondering about the most cost effective safe heated steering wheel upgrade? Neat build! Down lining, if you're not allergic to, heats up the quickest seems and you might be able to find from a second hand store to pack in while at it since that coat looks thin. I've picked up a few to use as inner liners that fit well as layers and wouldn't hold up on the outside since need cotton or something that doesn't go up in flames quick (at least I do need) or tear up seems. Polyfleece and puffer fill works, though down seems better. Wonder what fabric, maybe like an EMF related fabric would distribute the heat better while at is as well?

I noticed a few of these buttons have a preinstalled fabric overlapping the back. This would help glue it. 10 years ago I did heated seats in my SUV with these types of pads. They were way bigger and tried to work something out that would work for a jacket. Problem was the 12volts and the current draw for those made it unfeasible to power with a battery. I remember you doing that seat and didn't know they had made something small and usb powered like this, so credit is due there for you. Thanks! These have been on my wish list forever and they popped in my head while doing a China Aliexpress order a few months back(still warm outside). They were only $5 so I bought a couple. If anyone else reads this go check out his video on these in a seat kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIHae5umpcx3abcsi=F7rB7kMAwkLNzFpK

I know its going to be a good video when I see you break out the shoe goop.. hey Moe, years ago I saw an inventor on tv in Paris make a heated helmet, it had a little alcohol burner that preheated the air the user breathed that allowed him to walk around outside only in longjohns and not get cold. I always wanted to make a suit to wear for heat that had little tubes to run ice water through. and wear an ice cooler on my back to hold the ice water and pump.

5v 2a means 10 watts. That's not much heat. Yours have survived 18v? 13 watt is 30% more power, or 30% more heat! On the 10ah USB powerbank, usually that is at the nominal 3.7v for an NMC lithium cell, or 37 watt hours. Divided by 10 watts results in 3.7 hours at full power from the powerbank.

I have these pads and unfortunately they don't heat up as much as I need them to for motorcycle riding.. So next step would be to replace the on/off switch with a 12v controller, meaning I would then need to hook it up to some 12v system, in my case fused line to my motorcycle battery. However you can buy/use an adapter for 12v batteries thus getting more heat from these pads. Of course there may be dangers of producing too much heat but I'm waiting on a 12v controller to see how well these pads will preform. Thanks for the idea!
