One important item that really should be considered is to secure the toolbox (really any heavy item) so it doesn't become a potential source of injury in an accident or quick maneuver. An emergency stop has the potential for this loaded toolbox to slide into the feet of the rear passengers.
@kobayashimaru81142 жыл бұрын
Good point. It can be secured to the seat mounts with a cable or chain. I went the simple route of just making a 3 sided wall to keep things tucked under the seats and simply bungee corded the contraption to the seat mounts.

Makes me appreciate my Ram that already has under seat storage plus 2 storage bins in the floor under the mat from the factory. I have tons of recovery gear and tools in there. Nice work though. Where there's a will, there's a way. I'm sure by now you know how valuable that space is. My only other suggestion would be to come up with a way to put longer objects in there (over 2 ft). Perhaps 2 different size drawers, or leave the rear of the drawer and partition shorter and level to allow a a triangular gap where something longer could be placed in there sticking over into the next compartment. I stow a crow bar, breaker bar and a monster adjustable wrench under there (all stuff to work on suspension if needed).

I have a second Gen Raptor and want that exact box in metal with locking features for a black rifle on the driver side. You really need to be manufacturing these, as there is nothing on the market (that I can find) that is as nice. Great work by the way!

Matt Could easily be designed to have one on each side that pulls out with a shoulder holster & pistol and an AR with spare mags..... In these times of riots, this would be a great money maker..... I hate Ford, but I might be tempted to buy a new truck if I could get that double drawer system....
@WiringSolutionsOKC4 жыл бұрын
Rick Sanchez C137 - agreed. I found a lot of room behind my rear seat which is great for a black rifle and Amazon sells a magazine well lock with aircraft cable tether, so I feel fairly secure, but these drawers would be better and quicker to deploy.

Great idea and good explanation on the build. One more thing to consider adding might be some straps to help secure the box in the event of a crash. I think one or two straps attached on the backside would do the trick and might also slow down someone trying to steal a locked version of the box. The latch idea was sweet!

I'm thinking about building something similar, but in my case the drivers side would be a charging station for my drill batteries, jump-starter battery, and a little carry around battery pack that I use to run my laptop for a day or two without "shore power". I like to use light colors inside the drawers so the contents are easier to see in dim conditions. I'll keep heat and ventilation in mind, and route a 12V accessory cable directly into the system. I'm also thinking I'd like a simple system to be sure it stays in place until I want it to move, like a couple of loops and a carabiner for each side. Thanks for a good head start.

At 17:37, a tip for the hole saw to avoid the peeling of the laminate (seen on the inside). Start drilling your hole and only get it started 1/4 to 1/2 way through. Then, drill from the other side. It makes for a much cleaner edge on the hole. Nice idea for the slider box. Thanks for posting.

The best option is Walmart ! I bought a hard plastic rifle case with foam guts from Walmart for - $10 ! All my tools , a chain , a new strap , ball hitch , and other stuff fit in and nothing rattles ! I had to trim some of the foam so the new strap would let it close !
@mfuchs20044 жыл бұрын
Awesome project! One safety point for folks who will have passengers not in carseats: consider running tie-down straps to hold it in place during emergency stops. 20 pounds of stuff in a 20 pound box can easily break legs. We had a local child fatally injured by a 5 pound plastic speaker in a collision a few years back. Flew off the package shelf and crushed her skull.

This could also work with bent aluminum and a rivet gun if somebody really wanted it to be metal. I really like this, I hadn't thought of that space as a storage space myself. Genius
@LynxStarAuto3 жыл бұрын
Very nicely done. Another idea is to make the drawers open top, and simply mount the slide to the bottom of the drawer, and to the cab floor. Then the whole drawer just slides on the floor of the truck. Of course this truck is very nice to be modifying the cab floor like that, but on a work truck trim, it's an option.

Weathertech makes a storage bin that rides in the same place as the system you made here. Great job, I must admit, I thought you might struggle fitting it together, with only 6mm ply, but it looks solid, in the uk company's want £2500 for a false floor in my van and 3 metal drawers underneath, I'm thinking of doing it myself out of wood, won't cost anywhere near that. You should invest in a track saw, don't have to bother clamping straight edges to get a straight cut.
@pinkeye004 жыл бұрын
Life hack - avoid blowout on the back side by clamping a piece of sacrificial wood piece to the back of the facing board THEN drill. You won't have that unfinished look. Also, for a better fit on your handle .. sandpaper the hole on the FRONT side to remove splinters. fits better in the end.

I have been working on drawers for the front seats and also thinking about the rear seats on my 78 Suburban. They will be much more square as the older vehicles had an even area front to back under the back seat. I am planning to build mine out of metal and so the slam latches would be great except the front seat ones which I was planning to use solenoid latches as they would not be able to be seen if I did not want to show them to anyone. I was planning the front ones to carry more expensive things like cameras and such, but they also will be covered by sound deadening material and carpet that is the same as the carpet that will be in the cab of the Suburban. This will allow them to be completely hidden till they are opened.
