I always added black pepper to the scrambled eggs when we’d take our children camping, it helped camouflage any insects that may have accidentally gotten into the pan 😉 It’s a trick I learned from my dad.

A (recycled) pill bottle to carry your pepper? (Have done this while traveling.) Oh, if wire coat hangers are not to be had, one might secure a TIG welding rod or three. These are 36 inches long, and available in varied thicknesses. I’d use the ER308 (stainless) variety, in 3/32 inch.

Wow! Not sure what else I can say. Turning trash into something useful. Helping us save money, save the planet, and be better people. I am not sure where you get your ideas, but what you do reminds me of my Great Aunt & Uncle. I guess because they grew up in the depression they saved and used everything. We did not visit them often, but I do remember seeing some amazing things every time I went there. Makes me sad that we take for granted our elders. Wish I had more time with them, the things I could have learned. I am amazed at what you come up/show. If more people thought like that instead of just being consumers, the planet, as well as humans, would be better off. My hat is off to you. Thank you for educating us. Please keep it up. It is so refreshing to see someone talk about something that is possible and then show exactly how to do it. Then after doing it, show themselves using what they made and how well it works. I love WayPointSurvival videos! Thank you for caring and sharing.

Really, really well done! So well thought out and cleverly constructed, and basically free, since you would eat the food from the containers it is made from. When it starts getting damaged, or worn, just have some more Spam or Herring and replace it! I really appreciate the practical and adaptive nature of your videos. So smart and reminiscent of the clever and frugal mindset of the turn of the century (20th 🙂) where nothing is wasted. I don't think my Grandpa would ever throw anything away, and a straightened nail is just as good as a new one.

@@WayPointSurvival let me put something in perspective for ya. The reason my name is doc is because I'm an EMT by trade.... But also, living in SC we have a rich history that is beginning to be forgotten. You're preserving these traditions and this knowledge is of great importance for future generations. When I was homeless, I had to survive, I did it because I knew how, taught to me in scouting. The younger generations need guidance because the world isn't always kind and as my youngest son will tell you, " you survive by being comfortable with being uncomfortable" I would implore you to continue this series with diy's that others can do at home because it only takes one misstep in this world to end up where I was.

What a nice little cook kit. You cooking the bacon in the pans on the grill did it. I do something nasty when camping when the guys want to stay in the beds. Get a fire going , put a grill over it and then a coffee pot to start perking. While the pot is going I add bacon to the grill and cook it over the hot coals. Letting the drippings hit the hot coals. With the cool air of the morning and the smell of perking coffee along with the Bacon no one wants to stay in bed. Who says you can't have fun ( at your partners expense ) when camping.

TOTAL GENIUS !!!! A DIY project that allows you to relive history. Thank you James for designing and posting a fantastic reproduction. We have saved every spam can, both full size and the new half size, that our extended family uses. We do not have products such as kippered herring or the herring fillets used for this project available in the Philippines. We do have several brands of sardines in tomato sauce from companies such Del Monte and RoseBowl that are packed in oval tins and are a bit taller than the herring tin. Only one sardine tin will fit in the kit but it will get the job done. Going out to the carport now to search my can collection.

A good dog collar would also work, no need to destroy a good belt.

For any hobo’s with $15 spare you can get an army nesting kit with much more internal space that uses the fry pan handle to lock it all down, there are 3 pans (2 with handles) with lots of space inside once nested to improvise. Dave Canterbury has a recent review of them on his channel, they also have an attachment on the outside handle so you can hook them on the outside of a back pack to dry off after you’ve washed them. This is a nifty little kit but the metal is a bit thin for my liking, the kit Dave reviewed is stainless steel and much thicker so will last you many years as army kit is made to do, for the most part.

I'm speechless! This one is one of your extremly good videos. I found these spam and hering cans here in Germany as well, and I'm thinking of giving your diy hobo cook set construction a try. Only question is where i can find these heat resistent paint in my local construction centers. Am I correct to search for a spray paint, or did you brush it with a liquit one?
