You failed to mention the crab eye effect. Every home cockpit uploads on youtube show the camera in a fixed centered position which doesn't show it. The crab eye effect is when you're sitting in either the pilot or co-pilot seat and the lines don't line up with your seating position. A perfect example is taxing, taking off and landing. At 24:24 you can see it in your video during the taxi test, but for the majority of it your camera was filming from the center. Once in the air you don't notice it, but on the ground it feels like you're moving sideways thus the crab eye effect.
@skytation
@skytation Жыл бұрын
Yep, definitely a pain for sure, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I just set my view to the center and leave it for the entire flight. Like you said, really only notice it on the ground.

One thing i did with a similar build I had done was get slightly larger screens and left a gap between the frame and the screens while adding a plastic window between me and screens. This , since the screens were larger than the frame window not only allowed a natural viewing change for minor head movements creating the illusion that there was more below the windows but also created alot more depth in perception .
@skytation
@skytation Жыл бұрын
Yep, considered this, but decided to go with them pushed up against. In my refresh of the cockpit, though, I will be doing a projector wrap around screen so it will allow for what you’re talking about👍🏻
@flybobbie1449
@flybobbie1449 Ай бұрын
Same as i did on my home sim. 32 inch screens are mounted about an inch back with some perspex windows. So gives depth when move head slightly.. Also real aircraft you do get annoying reflections on windows.

Very nice cockpit I like that setup because it’s possible to adapt it for different planes. Of course it’s cool to have a 1:1 replica cockpit of an real plane but an „universal“ cockpit gives you more freedom designing and building it how you want it. Thx for showing it looks just awesome, also it’s cool to see the air vents are actually working

This has to be one of the best home sims I have ever seen. Beaten only by people that have built near replicas of commercial airliners. I love the sinplicity and modern looks of your sim. Well done. I am still in the process of designing / making mine. But mine will be converting between work desk and flight sim. No room for a dedicated simulator space.
@skytation
@skytation Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was definitely the first big decision I had to make.... do I go for ultra real, making every single button, switch, and lever perfect scale replicas? While that would have been cool, I thought it more wise to build something that I could always adapt with. As much as I'd like to say I only want to ever fly the Longitude until the end of time, I know realistically that won't be the case. I'll want to try out other planes and the stream deck button setup allows me to do that. It works best for my use case, and honestly that would be my number one tip for anyone wanting to build a home cockpit.... do what makes the most sense for YOU, not what everyone else thinks you should do.
@flightsimdeskuk
@flightsimdeskuk Жыл бұрын
@skytation I agree. I am going a similar route. I have two main touchscreens with, a knobster and two streamdecks between them. I should be able to immersively, though not realistically, control most planes. I am not studying to be a real pilot so it doesn't matter to me if the controls are of the right type or are in the right position compared to the real aircraft. All that matters is that they are there somewhere and intuitive to use.

Still cheaper than owning, maintain, storage fees, insurance, certification. I've been flight siming for 35 years. have had Goflight radio stack, MCP, efis, throttle, rudder. 3 screens plus two for instruments. Now I just use Xbox with throttle and rudders on a 50-inch monitor. It's all relative. Also there are more companies that make cheaper hardware for flight Siming.

I was in the Royal Airforce at RAF Valley in Wales and spent hours in the Hawk sim that they use to train pilots .Eventually i got a few chances to actually get flights in the real thing . I was very lucky that i got to actually fly the Hawk with an instructor on what they call the morning weather flight .This was and is done every day to check out the weather before young trainee pilots fly for that day . So i now want to build my own home sim but simply don't have the IT skills to set up all of the screens and the controls . I know that there are some control mapping channels out there but they are far and few between . I love your set up great stuff.
@skytation
@skytation Жыл бұрын
Very cool! Yeah I had zero experience with any of this stuff when I started. Just took a lot of googling, a lot of researching videos, and a lot of reading. Eventually you just sort of "figure it out" hahaha. My best piece of advice, don't latch on to any one method or design. Take inspiration from all the ones you research and come upon, but make something that works for YOU. I got plenty of flack for not modeling every single switch, button, and lever after the real Citation Longitude, but that wasn't my goal. First off, I didn't know how to make/program all those individual buttons and knobs, but also I wanted something I could eventually switch between different types of planes if I wanted. And stream decks gave me that ability while still looking very cool in the process. So yeah, figure out what your end goal is first, and then just go from there! It's definitely a fun process....labor intensive and stressful....but fun🤣

As someone who has never played or experienced Microsoft Flight Simulator, my opinion doesn't matter, but dude, I'm gonna be SO mad if you don't have the inflatable Autopilot from Airplane! Edit - Do flight simulators have a "Distraction training" mode? Where, you'd just be doing... whatever you usually do in the simulator -- I imagine it's not a "video game" that you can "win" but, I digress -- and every four and a half minutes, you just hear Leslie Nielsen, "Just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you."

Just ran into this vid and I like solving problems. ..lol.. You could try a curtain track mounted on the ceiling that would nicely shimmy around the periphy. Another easy thought would those stand up room deviders or even office deviders just too have this whole thing be less distracting and clean up for the outside. my 2 cents. Nice vid!
@skytation
@skytation Жыл бұрын
That’s a great idea with the ceiling slider mount. Right now I have it on the outside on a rod but I like your idea much better, gonna look into it. Yeah the outside I’m actually planning on finishing. Just basically panel it all up with a nice coat of paint so it looks finished. Also get some order to the cables. I mainly wanted to give it a good 6-12 months of break in time so I could use it, see what changes needed to be made, and then once I was happy with it then do a complete “finish” including the exterior. My wife will certainly appreciate that 😂

Hate to hear to you tore this all down. I know you are upgrading, but I really enjoyed your touch on the longitude. If a full replica is what you want, that's cool, but yours stood out to me with the personal touches. Your use of the stream decks and the tablets looks great. I watched a few of your past live streams, and this thing looks very immersive. Hopefully, the new build is coming along, I would love to see it.
@skytation

I wouldn’t say “tore”, just gently disassembled 😂 but yeah, gonna go for something a bit more realistic in the next version. I did v1 with the stream decks and all that because for one it’s all I knew how to do 😂 but also so that I could fly different aircraft if I wanted. However, I know now I really don’t ever fly anything but the Longitude, and with some newly acquired programming and design skills I can now model out physical buttons/switches/levers that I couldn’t before. So that’s what all led to the decision to overhaul it 🤘

This is best setup I’ve seen in terms of both functionality and aesthetics. It looks amazing. The part I can’t figure out is how you got your wife to pick up materials for the project while she was out. You need to write a book on that aspect alone.

Do instruments that have been 'popped out' to another screen, are they sticky yet or do they still need to be popped out and moved every flight ?
@skytation
@skytation Жыл бұрын
I think MSFS has native functionality now that remembers their position on screens once popped out, you still need to pop them out manually though. I use a program called pop out panel manager that pops them out automatically, remembers their location on screens, and allows you to apply touch functionality on touch screens for use with things like GTCs.

Sorry, never had any actual blue prints. There’s lots of comments on the tour video that ask about dimensions. Really the only ones I can remember were the width (from outside edge of seat to outside edge of seat) was 45”. That’s simply because my main front monitor was 45-46” wide and I didn’t want it going any wider than that. Now of course the upper window panels then flared out some creating that extra width on the top half. Again, they were 45” near the front, but at the back I’d say that width increased to about 72” maybe? Then length (from the very front where rudder pedals backed up to) all the way back to the curtain was about 60” I believe. And then the height was about 48” in the front up to about 60” at the back. Hope that helps!

@skytation
@skytation Жыл бұрын
No, they aren’t connected. Since I used honeycomb yokes they each had their own input into the sim, so I didn’t want them moving together trying to send conflicting signals to the sim. However, on my new build, the yokes I’m building will be connected and move together 🤘

For those wondering the monitor alone in the uk that main front window monitor is £2'000 without a single switch cable tie or curtain hook included. Thats a serious dedication to go to all that effort and expense, Bravo on your commitment to flight sim.

Nope, they are not connected to each other. I did explore that option, but it was just going to be too clunky with the honeycombs. Maybe someday if I ever build my own yokes I’ll do it👍🏻

1 front view only still. Djort throw projector. Thinking about using a fisheye lens and building a curved screen. We had a curved screen years ago but it was pointless. Theres not enough space for more projectors but s projector eith fisheye lens might work. Or we try a similar setup as your setup. Do you have a how to video about your outside view setup??
@skytation
@skytation 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, I considered projectors as well, but I had heard some people say the lackluster resolution isn't worth having the bevel free views. My monitors weren't anything special, the 49" curved front I had running at 5120x1440, and the two side views were 34" ultra wides running at 2560x1080. I chose them specifically because I wanted them to fit the window cutouts and essentially act as the actual "windows" and not just monitors. Worked ok, I enjoyed it, but in the rebuild here I think I'm going to go for TVs, that way I can get a little bit more screen real estate, but then also have them set back from the window openings a little more to allow me to look out and around. Also going to shoot for 4K. Doubt my PC is going to be able to handle three 4K outputs, but I have some ideas for that, we'll see!@@per-davidalm1434

Use electric jacks for campers. 12v you need 6. Look at videos of airline trainers. It's less complicated than what you've done so far. You could have the movements activate from physical movements in the controls. Power it with 12 volt battery chargers. Run it through your fake fuse box and make it a real fuse box or don't.

@@oliverbird2930 Yeah, unfortunately that is one of the big downfalls with the current MSFS multi view functionality... they cannot be controlled independently (as it relates to movement of the main cockpit camera view). When you move the main cockpit camera up/down/left/right it's going to do the same on the side views.
