Great video! I just got an insignia keggerator that I use also as a fermentation chamber it fits the anvil fermentor & 6 gal mega mouth turpedo keg. I am about to start pressure fermenting in the turpedo keg. That's my brew, drink, repeat.
Жыл бұрын
Do it by season. Brewed a Märzen in March in the garage. The yeast said 10-15 C and the Garage had the perfect temperature. For even colder I would move it to the Cellar, and a Saison I waited until we had a some perfect summer day and let i ferment in perfect surroundings in our house... There are different zones in the house.

WortChilling: -First stage: DIY 50’ garden hose counterflow chiller leaving the boil kettle and using tap water.(for me, wort is about 75~80F at this point. -Second stage: wort leaving counterflow chiller enters cheapo 25’ copper immersion chiller (the one that came with your first brew kit) The immersion chiller is sitting in a ice chest full of water and 20lbs of ice (40 lbs for lagers). -Shake the immersion chiller in ice bath the whole time transferring into the fermenter (1/2 bbl Sanke keg) to keep the discharge temp as low as possible. (60-65 for ales and 45-50 for lagers) -hit that shit with an inline oxygen stone (get a medical style regulator off eBay for $20 and find a small oxygen tank on Craigslist for $60 then swap that shit at the welding supply house for a full tank) as it enters the fermenter and pitch that bitch. Temp control: -Find a free or cheap standup vertical freezer on Craigslist. -Buy a $25 Inkbird 308 temp controller. Heat: buy 1 or 2 seed germination wraps on Amazon (they’re made for water exposure and if 2 are used in parallel it still won’t exceed the rating of the Inkbird controller. I use one just for D-rests and it’s perfect. Haven’t fucked around with sours or kvieks to want to use two) Ferment D-rest Cold crash Rack Carb MBC Done.

My DIY lager method is to ferment under pressure at 65-74 degrees. Usually takes like 5 -7 days to package. Then I cold crash it and add gelatin and transfer to keg. Whole process takes about 1.5 week and it’s already carbonated. I’ve done this 3 times and haven’t noticed any off flavors from fermenting at high temperatures

@@kdh06004 fermzilla, I recommend the all rounder. For one, it’s cheaper then the normal 27L one AND you don’t have to go thought the hastle of taking it apart and putting it back together. I have both and prefer the all rounder way more! You can also use a corny keg with a spun-ding valve but I like the feature the Fermzilla offers, being able to see how much liquid to trube/ yeast you have. You can also cold crash without suckback

I live in London England and winters are pretty cold over here. Last winter I lagered a rauchbier in my garden shed. Around January into February we had pretty consistent temperatures of 5 - 7c daytime (40 to 45f?) with overnights around 0c (32f) - worked pretty well! You do have to be lucky with the weather though - I've bought a beer fridge now so I can lager year round

"There's the airplane... every five minutes. It's getting worse..." I know your pain, my friend... Live in Clairemont too damn close to Montgomery Field. Planes and helicopters, directly over the house, almost every five minutes. Chilling for me has always been a good ol' plastic fermenter or the dreaded glass carboy in the keg fridge, that's hooked up to a thermostat. $65 for a steady 65 degrees! The wife just bought me the 7 gallon SS conical for my birthday, and I'm dying to use it... but it doesn't fit in the keg fridge. Looking forward to the review of the Anvil cooling system. But, I think it's probably just time for a Craigslist search for a bigger fridge. Keep doing what you're doing, man... love the videos!

For hot fermentation, I fill a plastic tub with water, set my fermenting bucket in so it's about 3/4 submerged, then control the water temp with a sous vide wand. To save water, I usually reuse the water I used chilling down, since it starts out pretty hot anyway. In my basement (about 65 degrees F) I set the sous vide wand to 100 degrees F, ferments Kveik perfectly.

@Reptile36snakeman

Thinking of using a old natures spirit reptile egg incubator for a fermentation chamber, doing a test now to see if it will hold temps inside a carboy. My first issue was will a carboy fit inside the incubator. It does, only issue is no room for a airlock in the size incubator I have.( there is not enough height), I believe I will have just enough room to put on a makeshift blow off tube in order to use this incubator. I have a extremely accurate temperature controller with a long wire probe that I was thinking of running thru the blow off tubing up and into the carboy. Upon my first testing today I filled the carboy with water managed to get it in this chamber, put the probe into the test carboy and it held exactly what I set the thermostat to. I used 68 as a base, anticipating a few degree jump in the carboy with liquid in it. I was pleased after several hrs the temperature in the carboy was exactly 68 and the thermostat was not kicking on and off it stayed right at what I set. do you think this will work? it has also a recirculation fan inside to move the air around inside keeping the temps stable. i figured i would share my repurpose of this incubator. may help someone out wanting something similar.

My wife has thyroid issues, so we keep the apartment at 80 during the day (76 at night). Works great for kveik. Got a barleywine I brewed Saturday (1.116 OG), and it's already nearly done. Haven't had a brew take more than 4 days to ferment out with kveik (and with no off flavors!). Gotta love it. The Lallemand's Voss doesn't seem to put off too many esters at these temps, so it works for most styles. This barleywine is kicking out some huge orange vibes though (like biscuits with orange marmalade; I'm drooling now). Probably the hops (EKG), but it could the yeast, or a combination. I'm going to die waiting for this to age, but it will be worth it. When she's done with grad school, and we get a more permanent location, I'd REALLY like to get some temp control. I love kveik, but I'd like flexibility. And yes, the tub is off limits. My fermentation space is limited to my desk (so like two 1 gallon carboys, and a 2 gallon bucket fermentor), until we get a larger space. She's a sweetheart, and let's me commandeer a section of the fridge for cold crashing for a day or two. xD

Root cellar. In the old days, almost all lagers were brewed in caves over the winter. This is why most of the bockfests are held toward the end of February. There was a limited time to brew ales because the temp was hard to keep stable. Refrigeration was mostly an investment from brewers so that they could brew year round. So thank the beer gods for the fridge in your kitchen. The original way is still valid. Once you get past the frost line, or at least close, the temperature underground is stable at about 50-55 degrees. A hole dug in the back yard with a little insulation, and you have natures fridge called a root cellar. There will be minor variations on temp during the season changes, but not much. Mine is a small room, but stays about 59 when it is over 100 outside, and about 49 if it gets below zero. Just look up small root cellar and they is plenty to see. Here is the shortest youtube video of all time, but you will see the idea. kzbin.info?search_query=brewing+in+root+cellar

I have a big ass Coleman cooler that the 5 gallon carboy fits in. I wondering if I fill it with water, ice and all the frozen water bottles my wife keeps if the power goes out could I lager easily. There's only one way to find out...

Yep... Still confused lol. I'm planning to do a blonde ale with kveik yeast. If I had done this a couple months ago in North Texas, I could've just let it go with ambient temperature. Wouldn't just straight hot water in the bathtub be too hot?

Quick question regarding the Fermzilla canonical and heating pads. I found the circumference of the fermenter to be 43.6 inches. would a single heating pad wrapping half of the fermenter be fine or should I find one long enough to wrap more than 50% of the fermenter? I am creating my lists of what is required now :)

Sorry man I have absolutely no clue. I don't have a fermzilla, and I've also had really bad luck with heating pads. All mine are extremely janky

@@HOMEBREW4LIFE I thought I already put this up but, I regularly use keviek and ferment at 96+ I use a couple of heating pads around my allrounder plugged into the Inkbird on heating and the sensor stuck to the side of the fermenter with plumbers putty. Cover it all with old towels and it works perfectly and cheaply. I use two of these: Boncare Electric Heating Pad with One-Touch Heat for Sore Muscles, Cramps and Back Pain Relief, Neck, Shoulders, Joints and Knees, No Temperature Control, Small 12” x 15” No heat control so no jank. Control is with the inkbird. Works for fermenting in a keg as well. Hold the pads on with a bungee cord.

Man you're way wrong on making a fridge, easy! I made the fridge below on a Saturday morning. Open up the interior into one space, seal up the cuts with the waste separation I cut out. Fridge was free being updated, temp regulator a few bucks. This one has a humidifier because I am curing meat in this one, but I use it for fermentation because cooling is my only need. Easy to have 2 temp controllers and a heat mat for hot cold. However next cheap fridge I see I'm making a fermentation chamber using the same kit. kzbin.infolvMNcBQZyII?si=eLKdZgxZoTX4W-jq

@@HOMEBREW4LIFE I'm confused. Did you have the heaters in an exterior jacket or inside the fermentor? All you need is one if it's inside. A basic 300-watt heater will cook just about anything.
