Dear Sir, This video saved me. I was living in a new apartment with this type of thermostat. I am a spoiled white kid who only ever had to face off with digital thermostats. I want to express my deep gratitude that you took the time out of your day to make this video. Although it may seem like you are difficult to understand, a little close listening is all it took. We just moved into and apartment with one of these. It says its 70 degrees or so but it is freezing in here. Mind you it's about 50 degrees outside. I'm not sure the heat actually works and I'm a little afraid to touch the dial
@themrhelperguy5 жыл бұрын
If your thermostat is set at 70 on the upper part and the lower part is more than 5 degrees lower than that you might have a problem. Today would be a good day to turn up the thermostat which means you are going to have to touch the dial and make sure the heat comes on. Good luck kylie.

Yes the heat anticipator is a common problem when furnaces over run the temp. With oversized furnaces it's a little bit of a balancing between overruns and short cycling
@BlondieHappyGuyАй бұрын
I realize that this is an older video, but I just wanted to chime in on the "accuracy" thing. Very often, the thermostat may not actually be mounted perfectly. As this uses a mercury glob that uses gravity to move, the thermostat must be mounted 100% level! It's interesting that on "new" versions of this (they are not good... but) they have a flat spot right on the top so that you can use a little level to make sure it's 100% level. On these older types, it's a bit more difficult, but you can put the level across the 2 little clips, on each side (that clip on the cover) as your guide. Once this is mounted properly, the accuracy should be good. Also, on that, the thermostat MUST BE CLEAN inside. If the "spring" gets dusty or dirty, it will not react to temperature correctly. If one is comfortable, one could remove it (not during heating season is best) and give it a very good clean.. GENTLY. Perhaps just using a Q-Tip dipped in Isopropyl, shaking off the access first.

How do you adjust that little thing down at the bottom? My thermostat is set at 60 in the basement but the temperatures up to 70 so I turned my furnace off - help!!

Maybe you can give me an idea of whats going on with mine.Its exactly the same as this thermostat.Its 64 in the house and it comes on at 62.I want the house to be 70.I turn the thermostat up to 70,but it will just run for a long time and not actually reach 70..who can afford to run the furnace like that? So I will have to turn it down to 60 in order to shut it off.I just noticed the anticipator was at .6 shld I adjust it? Im just trying to figure out why the temp in the house will only maintain 64
@dmprdctns2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Great video! Do you think there is any way to adjust the thermometer on an older T86A7 with the smaller dial? There's no way to access nor adjust the thermometer "spring" thing.... The back, beneath the mount plate only shows like the end of the metal dial shaft embedded in the plastic but with a manufacturer's non-tamper goo-seal across it... I mean, I'm a really mechanically minded fellow and I can't see any way to remove that dial / knob... The thermometer is sluggish and off by about 7 degrees F above other thermometers, here. (including a Honeywell that looks like yours with the easy access adjusting screw on its back...) But, the T86A7 has no access whatsoever... A pity because its a gorgeous little piece. I only use these classic thermostats around the house as thermometers only and are not hooked up. Thanks...

Thanks for the video! I have a question...I just changed out my old Honeywell thermostat. Everything is connected where it should be. But my problem is that I cannot get the system to start up! It's driving me crazy. We have an older model furnace(?) it's a Crane Line...I cannot find anything on google about it. Any idea on what I should do?
@themrhelperguy10 жыл бұрын
Kayla Santos could by many things. Make sure your system switch is on heat if you have one. Does your new therm have batteries. Sometimes the r and b terminals are hard to read. If you just can't figure it out take the thermostat off the sub base and jump out the red and white terminals your furnace should fire up. That will at least make sure nothing happened in the wall during installation. What did you replace the Honeywell with.
@themrhelperguy10 жыл бұрын
themrhelperguyKayla if you can't get it to run I will need more information. Especially what kind of therm did you replace it with.
@kaylasantos519810 жыл бұрын
I replaced it with another Honeywell. The old one was similar to this one you had in this video- it had the mercury bulb. Now, the new one doesn't. It's a ct87n model for heat/cool (the old was ct87a). I jumped the wires like you said and it worked! My heat is currently working, so I know there's nothing wrong with the furnace. Maybe I am using the wrong thermostat? There was two options at the store, one that supports heating and cooling and one that only supported heating...so maybe this is my issue?
@themrhelperguy10 жыл бұрын
Kayla Santos if your furnace is heating only buy heating only thermostat. These are good thermostats that do not need leveling. But please read the directions there are little switches on the back of these that need set.
@themrhelperguy10 жыл бұрын
Kayla Santos your ct87n should work. Make sure red goes to r and white goes to w. The top two system switches need set to heat and the other set to auto.

the thermostat with the little mercury ball do not make a click noise. You cant buy these anymore. The newer electronic ones have that click noise when the thermostat calls for heat. There may be electronic ones that do not click buy every one that i have run across give that click noise.

This video fails to which way to rotate the total housing so the the temperature reached as measured is the same as the setting on the dial!
@themrhelperguy10 жыл бұрын
S. Steve Adkins you can play around with rotating the ts to match the temperature readings. But getting a good thermometer and comparing it with the temp setting will tell you how many degrees you are off so you can compensate. They also made a very little used tool to adjust the mercury bulb. But the best way is to ignore the bottom reading and have a thermometer in the rooms that the thermostat serves and adjust the thermostat accordingly. You may have the thing set at 70 in the hallway and it heats the rooms to 74. If that is the case you could set the stat to 66 to keep the rooms at 70.

Don't remove the mercury thermostats, they are far superior to what is made today, and left in place are not an environmental problem. They require no batteries and unlike modern thermostats almost never break and will not shut down your system in the middle of winter when you are on vacation because of a weak battery, causing your pipes to freeze and flood the place. (happened to me) The energy savings from a electronic thermostat is greatly overrated to in fact in my actual real life studies, I can detect almost no difference. As a landlord, I used to replace mercury thermostats routinely, However, after spending over a thousand dollars in cost of replacements, troubleshooting, parts and labor for techs to troubleshoot Hvac units only to discover malfunctioning electronic thermostats, I reinstalled the old mercury ones that i had on hand, and they just keep functioning decade after decade. Finally, there is no programing required which is time consuming to have to keep reprogramming them constantly for various reasons.

This is a common issue with these thermostats. The bottom thermometer is not very accurate and has no function in controlling your furnace. If it says it's 58 and you have the top set at 75 the furnace is not coming on you know you got a problem. I have a 10 dollar digital thermometer that is very accurate. I use this to monitor the temp in the room. Also keep in mind these thermostats are the best even with that lower thermometer not being to accurate. Make sure the thermostat is level confirm the temp with a digital thermometer and let it run.

@@themrhelperguy Mr. Themrhelpguy- thanks for your immediate response. I like this round thermostat (Honeywell T87F) because this thermostat is located in our bedroom and electronic thermostats create a clicking noise when operating on and off. Hard to sleep with clicking noise. The electronic thermostats click when giving the furnace the instruction to fire up and clicks when shutting off. Anyhow, the mercury switch has no clicking sounds. Nice. So I am able to sleep when the cycles and demands of the furnace are many during the frigid days of January here in Central Illinois. I will take your advise and purchase a digital indoor thermometer to get the correct room temperature reading. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge expert. You ROCK. Cheers! Alex Taft
