All the force you need to tighten the filter it's from your hand. I've been doing all my oil changes for 10 years with no leaks.

Use a 15/16 inch socket on that tool not the 24mm. 15/16 fits that tool (I have the same tool!) and is slightly smaller than the 24mm. Great video. Great job!

I prefer the Motivx MX2320 oil filter cap wrench. More money but I consider it the best.

JackTannehillPromoter yes that tool and the Assenmacher TOY640 are really high quality tools for removal of the filter housing. If you do the work yourself you won't have issues. It's the people that are trying to do it themselves that have had it done previously at a shop where they have overtightened it. Have a good one!

Did you lost two of your friends? Nevertheless, I am sorry for your lost. A vet botched a simple surgery on my friend. He was normal but after surgery he was paralyzed. She never said sorry but stole $1,500.00. I had to put my friend to sleep. Now, a mech/grease monkey tightened the oil filter assy so tight that even the TOY640 Oil Filter Wrench cracked. Had to drill holes into the oil filter housing & rigged an "L" rod through to spin out the filter. Of course a new Oil Filter Housing as well as the raw filter were installed. Well done in taking your time out & showing it to us.

Still have my girl. Its my big boy that passed away from cancer. My Vet was pretty decent although have heard stories about them mis-diagnosing and the like. Thanks for the kind thought.

6.5 quarts of oil in this Lexus for capacity
@sd9062388 жыл бұрын
I just bought a 2016 Sienna. I know from past experience that they put the filters on super tight at the factory super tight, so the first filter change can be hard. I also got 4 free oil changes during the first 2 years from Toyota. I'm afraid the Toyota techs may put the filter housing back on super tight. I'm wondering if it would be better to just do all the oil changes my self and avoid the aggravation of dealing with tech over tightening and screwing up the filter housing.

I would do it myself.

Thumbs up for your effort and your nice Lexus, I like them both the IS and the GS series. How is the car in maintenance?

You removed the plastic cover under the car?
@Rottboy86 жыл бұрын
unebonnevie - no need. Filter and oil drain plug are exposed. I am of small built so can easily reach them. Larger individuals will need to jack up front of the RX on Jjack stands for clearance.

How did you clean the engine bay? Did you only use a damp rag or towel?
@Rottboy88 жыл бұрын
Used a damp microfiber cloth, then a narrow stiff paint brush and toothbrush for the hard to reach parts.

I have been looking for a 2008 DIY oil change, is it the same with 2010 and so on?
@njsongwriter4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. I believe it's the same unless you have a 2.4 liter four cylinder engine. In 2010 both the four and six cylinder engines have this same cartridge oil filter system.

At 2 minute mark you say you will show how filter housing drain plug is removed and then you completely skip over that and the removal of the oil filter housing This is the hardest part of the whole job because of the type and quality of the oil filter housing wrench and there are 2 different ways to use it. Just see Amazon reviews for the good versus the bad and the 2 different ways to use them. You do come back and say the plug was too tight and you had to remove the 2 parts together but you don't show the failure or the successful removal of the housing or the housing drain plug once you removed the housing. Also FYI in my 2013 RX450 AWD there is a 12/14 mm open end wrench in the pouch with the other factory tools next to car jack next to the spare tire which can be used in a pinch (likely with additional leverage or tapping lightly with a hammer to begin the loosening process) if you do not have a socket for the drain plug.

Everyone who has this system should be prepared for a worse case scenario especially if this is the first time you're doing this. In case of a Stuck Oil Filter Make sure you have the following... 1. The proper Motivx* oil filter cap wrench. Item #MX2320 us for all Toyota/Lexus/Scion engines 2.0 liters and larger using a cartridge style oil filter or item #MX2321 is for all engines smaller than 2.0 liters using a cartridge style filter. 2. A 27 mm ½ inch drive socket 3. A ½ drive breaker bar (18 inches or longer in length. An extension may be needed for some models.) If an oil filter cap seems difficult to remove, only the above items should be used (or equivalent tools). Do not simply use a ⅜ inch drive ratchet or ratchet with extension as these will sometimes result in breakage of the oil filter cap wrench or the oil filter cap. Always make sure the teeth on the wrench are properly engaged with the tabs on the oil filter cap. To prevent reoccurrence of the problem •Make sure new o-rings are properly lubricated before installing. •Use a torque wrench to install the oil filter cap to no more than 18 ft.lbs (25 N•m). Oil filter drainplug = 10 ft.lbs. (13 N•m) * If you think the Motivx tools are too expensive at least consider the following... Do not buy an oil filter cap wrench that is made from cast aluminum. Only buy one that is forged. Do not buy one that is strictly a cap wrench that does not have teeth. Do not buy one that claims to fit all models or even all four cylinders. The 2.0 and 2.5 liter four cylinder engines use the same oil filter cap wrenches as the six and eight cylinder engines use. Only the 1.8 and 1.3 liter engines use a different size oil filter cap and oil filter cap wrench. If the oil filter for your four cylinder vehicle comes with one o-ring instead of two then your vehicle takes the same wrench as a Prius or Corolla. If your oil filter comes with two o-rings & a drain tool then your oil filter cap takes the same wrench as the six and eight cylinder engines. Some companies claim their wrench works for all four cylinders but on the 2.5 liter engines that smaller wrench does not engage the teeth on the wrench to the tabs on the oil filter cap. It may work if your oil filter cap is not stuck but it is a poor choice. They are mislead.

Why oh why did you say you wouldn't tighten the oil filter over 30 ft.lbs.? You had it right in your hand and didn't bother to read the torque spec can be found right on the oil filter cap? 25N•m 25N•m is only 18 lb.ft. You shouldn't tighten it over 21½ lb.ft. The oil filter cap drainplug should only be 9 lb.ft. Since you didn't read that, you likely didn't read the instructions that are found on the box the Toyota OEM filter come in either...?
