I had a big problem after watching this video. I bought a Gillette Black Beauty that looked like brand new, and I wanted to sanitise it. After following the advice of putting it in my dishwasher, the black paint on the handle was totally ruined!! Although I love this channel and your advices, I have to say that I was really disappointed after my experience following your advice.

Oh man. Hit the easy button Brother. Safariland Breakfree CLP. I came across a steel bottom Gillette Black Beauty. It was completely seized up. CLP will flush all the crap out of the threads and well, everywhere else too. Without even needing to use a brush, it will even take any gunk built up in the plastic texturing (or steel knurling, depending on what your razor's handle is made of INSTANTLY). It's safe for all metals and plastics. It's also cheap to buy. Spray it on, and down the handle. Twist your adjuster, and the head open and closed a few dozen times. Seriously, it completely flushes out old soap scum and mineral deposit as soon as it comes into contact with it. It's designed to be safe and foolproof for removing carbon fouling and dirt from all firearms-even zinc, aluminum, and plastic parts, without causing any damage to them. Soap scum etc is a piece of cake for it. Rinse it out in hot water, then let it soak in some Distilled water. Distilled water will pull all of the remaining stuff out of the razor-even minerals left from the tap. In less than 5 minutes, your safety razor will be exponentially more clean than what the razor in the video was. With no brushing, or scrubbing. It's so easy, it should be criminal! And nice recommendation on flitz for polishing-if it's needed, it's the best way to go.

I found an old open comb 3 piece Gillette razor in my father's belongings. I is completely black with tarnish. I tried to clean with Flitz, but it is taking a long time. The metal underneath, I assume is nickel. Any thoughts? It says Pat Pending June 1920.

Fwiw, I've had good results using Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish. It says it's safe for all metals and that's also been my experience.

I have a blue vintage Lady Gillette with stars on it. I cleaned it up with my toothpaste (powdered whitening toothpaste from a health food store) and an electric toothbrush. It is already looking great and shiny, however in some places there's still black stuff on it. What can this be and how can I clean it off? Will Barkeepers Friend work??? Thank you

Had heavy soap build up on my butterfly razor. The Dawn and toothbrush helped remove most of the build up. For those hard to reach and remove places I used a wooden toothpick. Rigid enough to scrape away buildup, soft enough to not scratch the surface of the metal, and thin enough to reach the joints of the head.

One tip. Put water in the sink. Don't run 12 gallons down the drain while you stand back and brush.

I've got a 1962 Gillette Slim Adjustable that I purchased off eBay a few years ago. I shave with it quite often and now it's started to develop a green tarnish on the handle. Will Flitz or Mother's metal polish remove that tarnish without damaging the finish?

Is it normal for a polishing cloth to turn black while polishing with flintz polish? Is this the nickel finish being lifted or dirt from the razor?

yes this is the nickel you are "sanding" off. Major ingredient of all polishes is silica - sand.

Thanks for reply! Each time I decide one my razors are in need of a shine....I'm compromising of a thin layer of it's nickel finish! I take it polishing should not be done unless necessary. So as shown... dish soap, water,& proper drying, will do once a razor is cleaned/polished for routine maintenance? Do you recommend any other product for general cleaning between polishing to keep up the shine?

cj18 it depends. I wouldn't use WD40 on something with a plastic handle. It's petroleum based, and will damage plastics. Safariland Break Free CLP. Not just to lubricate, but to clean EVERYTHING off instantly-even the internals.

Unfortunately we found out the hard way that a Lady Gillette is NOT safe to put in the dishwasher. The delicate cycle took the blue colour off the handles of the two we put in on the delicate cycle. Wish I hadn't heard this particular bit of advice..

EVERY razor provides it's own challenges. I've washed lady gillettes in my dishwasher with no problem. It's really hard to give "blanket" advice. Sorry!

Don't clean your razor in the dishwasher, it will strip the finish. I wouldn't put my best china in the dishwasher for the same reason. it's too harsh.

I wouldn’t use the dishwasher, dishwasher soap contains chlorine bleach which can be corrosive.

I do NOT recommend a brass brush, you will ruin the black colour on each number, f. ex., you cause a lot of small scratches on your razor, you'll get a matt finish, I only use warm water and soap, and then I take Caramba oil ! LES
