I always wanted to restore a real Victorian house, but I am disabled now, so my dollhouse will have to suffice. I just wish I could install some pocket doors!

When I was a little kid I remember my dad taking out our sash windows and cleaning everything up. They had gotten quite stiff to move, so he stripped off the old paint from around the jambs, tracks and sashes, reglazed the windows, and cleaned and carefully oiled the pulleys. Our windows used rope rather than chain, but they had the weights. The weatherstripping was copper and he removed and replaced/re-installed that too. Once he was done they were way easier to lift than when he started.

🇬🇧 I remember well, renovating the Victorian sash windows on the first 2 houses my husband and I purchased after we married. They looked beautiful once done but I have to say once we moved to a modern home with double glazing, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. It doesn’t stop me admiring your home and the processes you are going through. Love your channel.

Love hearing the cicadas. The species in IL & MO are my favs, and I miss hearing them in the evening. In fact, cicadas and lightning bugs are the things I miss the most about living in that neck of the woods during the warmer months. I don’t miss the climate, though. My father worked for UE (Union Electric, before it was called Ameren,) as a lineman, and I remember a couple times in the 70’s when he’d have to leave and work in the south, on what I assume were outages from hurricanes. Hey, Jason, love the shots!

Fixing the windows is a very wise decision indeed, with winter coming soon I can think of a few reasons those projects wouldnt happen and how much easier it'll become to do other stuff indoors. As other commenters have said, making at least part of the house weather tight is important to do before winter comes. Because the sashes are perfect replicas, I don't think of them as "new". Just part of the original window order that came 130 years late.

Those new windows and the outside window frames you refinished made an enormous difference in the look of your house. I enjoy watching every vlog you produce, especially these days when all the work I need to do around the outside of my house before winter is giving me anxiety. Thinking back on it; a huge residential housing era with its many changes occurred just before and just after WW II, my parents bought a brick 1945 Colonial style in 1962 and, a 1937 Cape Cod, also brick in 1969. 1937 house; steam heat using fuel oil but had been converted to natural gas ca 1968, although that place 'may' have started out with coal. Those cast iron weights in the windows, also come to mind. The center support I beam running just under the main floor, the clearance between it and he basement/cellar floor was less than 6'; both my dad as well as myself, cracked our heads on it several times. Said Cape Cod, a LOT of its nuances were essentially Craftman and possibly late Victorian as well. 1945 house; forced air gas heat, basement height was closer to the modern 7' 5" standard. Basically, that the newer place had almost a modern MCM vibe to it.
