Thank you for this. I never worked on this type of engine before and was wondering how to tension the belt when no idler or tension pulley is present. Very helpful!

you are welcome. WHen purchasing the shims there are about 12 of them. be sure to use all of them on the pully. Have a great day!

Thank you for the video and information. Do you have any comments about using an aluminum pulley instead of the stock steel?

The aluminum pulley is easier to set the timing with a timing light and looks nicer. I hope that answered your question. Have a great day!

@@mountpac4464 Thank you, and I agree, the degree pulley is very convenient for setting the timing, but it's the alternator pulley that I found to be inferior to steel because if there is any looseness from the nut and shim setup compression of the belt will allow that play to rattle and damage the keyway groove.

I don't know. I know there are a couple options to choose from. the most important Item to look at when selecting an alternator is the wire connections. The one shown in the video is the external voltage regulator type. Have a great day!

I am installing a type 1 engine in my dune buggy it has an alternator like what you are working on so 1974 I believe. The three tabs are wired from the alternator to the regulator and they letter markings on both ends so I know where those wires go. And the bolt tab has a hot wire that goes from the alternator to the hot wire on the starter solenoid. In the car there would have been one more wire that went to a light on the dash do I need that wire on my dune buggy. And if I need that wire what does it connect to? It looks like it would have come from the regulator but I don't know from which of the three terminals it would have come from.

Hello, Thank you for your reply. The alternator is for a 1973 beetle, it requires an external regulator. I use an alternator with an internal regulator. I am not up to speed on the wiring of the external regulator. I did a brief search, there should be a dash warning light. I hope this answers your question. Have a great day! -Michael

Where did you get your replacement pulley? I got one online that came as one piece and it won’t fit over the shaft.

Sometimes I use a rubber mallet to help with the install. maybe a little bit of assembly lube. I hope this helps. Have a great day!!

Excuse me, how many shims do you need to have?
@mountpac44642 жыл бұрын
hello usually there are about 12. The placement and quantity depends on the belt adjusting. I hope this makes sense. Have a great day!

But how do you remove the pulley from the alternator?
