I am curious as too which ones you found badly engineered? I had a French built Renault in the early nineties that drove good but a pain to work on with lots of strange torx fittings so special tools needed.

I watched your video and it was very helpful when I was installing my generator. I had the same issue on the other side - with the collar/spacer not fitting onto the generator shaft. Turns out the EMPI collar was too small - the generator was fine. I dug up an old OEM collar and it fit perfectly. The new EMPI shims are also about twice as thick as the OEM shims - so I only needed one on each side.

I really appreciate your detailed explanations! We are in the process of converting to alternator with the engine in the car. My husband is a American car guy so all this is new to him and I can only change the oil so we need all the explaining we can get! We got the generator out, finally, after fighting the shroud and stand. Hopefully now the alternator will go in easier than the gen coming out. I wish you were our next door neighbor 😂😉

I had to replace the fan on one of my engines doggie house. Got a Scat from local VW parts/service business. The one I got wobbled. Took it back and I showed them. They said, "oh, that's not enough to rub". Well I told them to keep it. They do not provide refunds! They give you credit! Sadly I do not do business with them anymore unless absolutely necessary. I hate ordering online... A bad part is a real hassle! Jim

i got a torque wrench like that from my dad as well. some of the younger watchers may not know dr mccoy. as for the slightly off diameter pulley shaft, i point out that the bearings seem to be super smooth.

I have vw super beetle the engine is noise I adjusted valves they are set right. It sounds like it might be coming from the oil pump is that a possibility. Or maybe the cam gear? Thanks for posting all the videos they have helped me out for sure.

I have a new style alternator very similar to yours, but now mine has started showing charging voltage of 16v and at idle the idiot light is lightly flickering. I assume that the regulator is going bad, so the question is, can you easily replace it? I do not remember the manufacturer of the alternator. HELP!!!!!

The regulator definitely is not working properly. Be careful with that you don’t want to start a bigger issue than what you have. I have never taken apart at alternator like these. I’ve only restored the generators.

Actually you really won’t be pulling a bunch new wiring through. I only pulled two new wires through, because I wanted newer wiring. Most of that is done under the rear seat where you are changing things around.

Hello there, Question when you put electric ignition do you need to ground the coil ? Because I have only the ground wire from the electric ignition to the coil I'm so confused I already burned two electric ignition

two wires from electronic ignition go to the two terminals on either side of your coil. One is positive and the other is negative. That's it.Wire colours vary according to manufacturer..Get it right or it burns out in a second.

Why in the heck didn't you paint the rest of it ? And I can't believe you turned down the shaft but didn't put tape over the inlet of the alternator, so those metal or grit from the emery cloth didn't go inside of it!

Actually with the three prong alternator there is still an external regulator under the backseat. It actually has a plug on it. I think I have one right now for sale on the samba classified so I would have to look at my ads. When the one wire alternator came in to play it was internally regulated.

I have got the one that was under the back seat of the Super Beetle motor I purchased . I just was not sure if maybe it was used for the original generator and bypassed. I now have it mounted on the Bosch alternator with the three prongs. I’m using the engine for a sandrail dune buggy. I have done some internal searching on how to wire it up. @@mikedavisson2256 Thanks Mike I appreciate that. Yeah the regulator that was hooked up to my three prong alternator, had a plug on it. It was under the backseat. When I went over to the one wire alternator, I had to switch a lot of wiring around.

Honestly if I lived near you, I wouldn’t even charge. I like to help others out. It is quite difficult to find people to work on these cars unfortunately. But I would post may be on some Facebook groups, beetle groups and see if anyone knows of any in your area.
