Not trying to be a chooch, but you need to install flashing and prime your trim boards on all sides to seal prior to installing. Never caulk bare wood and priming all sides prevents future rot. Obviously not necessary for Azek or hardy board type material. Good basics though! Like i said, not being snooty, just trying to inform

Flash the bottom corners with window flashing tape. Then flash the bottom. Put a continuous bead of caulk around the sides and top of the nailing fin. Not the bottom. Put window in, shim to ensure it is level. Then flash tape the sides, then the top. Then caulk.

Where I live the rough opening has to be wrapped including putting a pan under the window. After installing the window you have to wrap the exterior as well as make and instal head flashing. It looks like your just relying on caulk to seal out the weather?

Because I'm always trying to get better, to be a craftsman, to do things properly, with the right application of caulk. So I might charge more for this, and lose the job to a dooosh who does it wrong and covers his tracks with two tubes of caulk. There are windows like this which last hundreds of years without leaking. in New England.

Jaran Schwend just for everyone watching, i watch these videos so i can comment and tell our customers to stop doing dumb shit. Everything you did and installed was completely wrong. I take pride in my job, i work 5-7 days a week, my crew puts in 30-45 windows a day. Apartments we hit up to 145 windows a day. Theres nothing worse than getting caught up on a crappy window installation where the owner thought they could do it themselves. Call a professional! This is one of those things where u dont skimp out on. Ur better off leaving it alone than opening crap up and making it worse
@archaicroger
@archaicroger 6 жыл бұрын
Actually KZbin recommended I watch and being old school and trying to learn from complete dumbasses like this fella is why I just couldn't stay retired from exterior remodeling after 34 years. You should have had your new unit in the opening within 10 minutes of being set up but instead chose to remove the entire old window. There's nothing wrong with the existing window frame but rather the sashes yet removed it. It was STRAIGHT with the house and not level and you removed it and leveled the new unit in. I can spot these leveled windows, now crooked, in a straight house with outstanding accuracy. Good luck with the outside trim fitting back where it came from too as the window isn't straight with the house anymore. Are you sucking up extra work by making the job far more complicated with on the job training for $30 an hour? The industry standard is to cap replacement window facings with metal where a guaranteed seal can be made and never with dirt attracting silicone.
@roddaman7545
@roddaman7545 6 жыл бұрын
Roger, Unless he knew the old window frame was water-tight, replacing the entire window is sometimes a better bet. People use replacement windows and after installation wonder why their walls leak - it's because the original window was leaking at it's perimeter and the replacement process didn't fix that. Not saying replacement is always wrong, or right - you have to identify the problem.

Preparing to replace a bedroom window in an old condo. The existing window is aluminum framed junk (mid 60's) and I just know the framing underneath is not in great shape and was simply an overall terrible install. Either didn't care, or just simply works without their heart in their workmanship. You answered a question I was asking myself. Getting ready to purchase an Anderson sliding window this weekend! But was asking myself if I should order one for "new construction" or replacement. Because I don't expect to find the framing in optimal condition around the existing window, I'll go for the new construction window. Thanks for the info, very helpful!:).

For future repair or removal I like to use pancake screws on the nailing flange. Simpson Strong Tie makes one variety that works well but there are many others just get the true pancake head. Also read the directions as most windows do not want the fastener seated tight but up just a hair for expansion and contraction especially on vinyl. I would also use one of the flashing systems before installing. Good video. Doug

I know what you say about picking a smaller size. Try putting a window in a mobile home! Available sizes: 30x54 and 30x48. My rough opening measured 30X52. One length of 2x4 and one piece of 1/2" plywood took care of the problem. I had a guy tell me that I shouldn't have done it, but what can a person do? I sure can't afford custom built windows!

@roddaman7545 6 жыл бұрын
Robb Joyce You absolutely DO install a sill pan - every time you can if you're putting a new window in a rough-opening. If your dropping it into an existing window frame (replacing the sashes) then the pan is trickier, but still a good idea. For the standard install in framed rough-opening, there are lots of ways of approaching it and you don't need to use metal always. For instance, Anderson's instructions utilize flexible flashing like Tyvek FlexWrap and a post-applied back-dam.

How did you add siding to this window? What insulation did you use between the window and siding?

Would have been nice to see you take out the old one! These old houses have all sorts of shit holding them together, so i would love to have seen how you dealt with the problem...:-)

Where is the 30#Felt paper you have to install on the bottom shelf and sides before the window goes on? From my own and my friends experience. If you dont add that felt paper.. the bottom of the window will rot. As you saw before you took out your window. This is what many people or people that think they are doing a great job. Only for it to rot on down the way in a year or so. If your going to pay quite a bit of money on the new window. Wouldnt you want it to last you more than a lifetime?

This window kind of reminds me of when I came home from school and there was some dead guy stuck in the smashed window of my apartment. He'd been trying to break into the place, but instead gutted himself on the insulated glass. That was not fun trying to explain that to the police.

It's 2019, I would like an update whether you now have water damage or not, because you did NOT put flashing around the opening before installing the window. This installation is not water tight /sealed at all. Guys, please do not install your windows this way. The main thing about installing windows is to keep water out of your wall by use of flashing and water proofing membrane.

So by getting a smaller window , how are you going to trim the outside - cover the gap with the old siding?

Didn't actually show any of the important bits - I know, you can't work and hold a camera at the same time, but this is youtube we need to see what you're doing, not just hear you talk about it.

Great video! This resembles my situation more than any other video! Question for you- looking straight down, there's that gap between the base (bottom/sil/stool, whatever it's called) and the siding. What is that material? On mine, it looks like wood that has become sort of fuzzy and I can break it apart easily. I'm wondering if I should fill it in with some kind of mud or place a base board that extends just to the end of the gap/inside edge of the siding. Thanks!

7:10 You skipped the part I was interested in. Did you install the new window on the bare wood 2x4? Water on wood = Rot. You gotta protect that 2x4 on the bottom. As a homeowner, I don't want to have to replace that same window ten years from now.

With that wood sill you'll be ripping it out and replacing it again in 15 years. PVC won't rot.
