One of the things that always turned me off to this product was getting it to stay in place. The channels in a garage door are much thicker than this product. The prospect of using tape or some other adhesive seemed to have two disadvantages: 1. the tape/adhesive would degrade with heat over time and 2. affixing it to the garage door negated the effects of the radiant barrier when it was hot outside. Your method of folding over the top and bottom is a brilliant idea. The panels will stay in place, as long as they aren't disturbed excessively by someone or something, and it creates the air gap that is required to reflect the summer heat back out to/through the garage door. Not to mention that it requires zero tools or other aids. You have sold me on this type of product to insulate my garage door. I am so glad I stumbled upon your video.

Hello Ryan. I think I used more than half a roll for the two doors cut into 16 sections. It felt like less than half the roll was left. I have used the spare for car shades so far. Trying to decide if I want to clip several strips together when I go camping to make a cover over my tent. I am off to Reggae on the River soon and it gets hot up there. And then as hot during the day, its freezing at night. I can honestly say these made a huge difference in reducing radiant heat coming off the doors. I even think it looks a little better than the exposed metal panel. I also feel it does a better job reflecting light back into the garage for work. Thank you for watching and the nice comment. Home depot had the radiant barrier for a reasonable price.

Hello, I do not think 50’ would have done my application. I have a little less than half a roll left I estimate. I have made two car sunshades with the excess so far. Trying to think of other uses for leftovers. Thank you for your comment.

Hello. It is still in place and has not fallen out. It still feels like the same material and is not flaking. I maybe would experiment with slipping in additional sheets in the void. Two schools of thought. One would say that creates thermal bridging. I would be curious if a bay with more layers transmits less heat or cold overall. One layer is still better than nothing. In the winter the problem becomes the concrete floor radiation cold as well. At least you eliminate the wall also being a refrigeration plate. Thank you for your comment. hope it goes well. Daniel

Dan ! You are the man, I just purchased two rolls of Reflectix for the garage door. It's pretty hot in Texas right now. I just did not know a good way to create that air gap, until I saw your video. Thank you Dan, great video.

Hello. Thank you for the very nice comment. Glad I could help. I was trying to figure out a clever way to get that gap as well. Then the fact that the material was oversized compared to the panel made the fix. Very happy with the results. I can feel the difference. I still need to ventilate as the garage in my case is a completely sealed box with the only fresh air being the garage doors. I run an inline fan and pull air into the space. The last step is to run some fans in there to get air movement. A few fans make all the difference.

I used foil faced foam board on a previous door but didn’t like the added weight although never had an issue after install. I wonder if the product you used works better. Did you measure the temp before and after in your garage ? Would be nice to know the actual difference. For me it dropped about 10* with the board. Nothing to write a book about.

I keep my doors down when not coming in or out. My neighbor runs a business too out of garage. All kinds of issues with HOA. I think he won because he still is running business with door open and working clearly out of garage. I avoid issues by leaving my door shut while working. Thank you for your comment

I know you mentioned you used a 2 ft x 100ft roll. Could you give me an approximate length of what you used? I am trying to see if i could get away with a 50ft roll for a single door/double car garage. Thanks. Great video!

Hello Ryan here are some better numbers for you. I cut sixteen panels for two door. Eight pieces were approximately 52", eight pieces were 51". I have 9' wide doors times two. I estimate that I used about 69' for two doors. Definitely needed the 100' for my job. Thanks for watching.

Dan, Thank you for taking the time to make the video! I like your method of maintaining a gap which is really needed for a radiant barrier. I'm curious, it's been almost a year. Have the panels stayed in place and have the gaps stayed in place, as well?

Hey man, thanks for the video, when you say measure between the ribs of the garage, where exactly are you measuring from?
@danthemandiyallday11605 жыл бұрын
Hello, The section height is essentially what you are measuring. The door is made of sections that roll up. Mine were less than 24" tall each. Each panel section folds over at the top and bottom creating a channel. My door sections were less than 24" tall. So a 24" piece of reflectix was able to fit perfectly with a C folded into the top and bottom. You should be able to find measuring points at the top and bottom of a section to get a rough measurement. If there is a roll of reflectix that matches your section heights plus a little extra so you can fold at the top and bottom to lock it into the door section. I lucked out and did not have to cut the roll except to match the widths. Meaning I was able to use a 24" roll and not trim it except for widths of the garage door. Hope that is not even more confusing. Thank you.

Do you have to make any adjustment to the garage doors with this insulation? I would think it's light enough not to need adjustment. Also, have you had any problems raising and lowering your garage door? Thanks for your video.

Hello. Sorry for really late reply did not see the question. No it has stayed in place since install. I imagine if you don't touch it, then it just stays there.
@SoulFU25 жыл бұрын
I see the reason for your install was due to extreme heat? Will this work well for both heat and cold?
@danthemandiyallday11605 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for your comment. I needed to do some testing to answer you. It is at least ten degrees warmer in the garage than outside. It had already begun to warm up outside so I think the differential overnight during the coldest period is even higher. Meaning the garage will not warm as it has the concrete slab as a cold sink. However the outside air had already warmed substantially already. I do think it does make a difference in cold as well. These are two metal doors that would otherwise conduct a tremendous amount of cold into the garage let alone the concrete slab acting as a refrigerator in its own right. You especially see the difference when you run a heater in the garage. I think the Reflectix keeps the heat in. I run a 6" Vortex fan drawing in many hundreds of cubic feet per minute. This is vented so it creates a vacuum in the garage that draws in fresh air from the cracks around the garage door. So a substantial amount of cold air is coming in while I run the heater. It still gets quite warm with a Mr. Buddy on full, warming a 20 x 20 space. It is only 1/4" or so foil faced bubble wrap. Don't expect a miracle, but it definitely helps the steel garage doors to not be radiating refrigerators. Polyiso would off course be better, but that is thick and requires more custom fitting. Also the indoor air quality is to be considered. Foam will give off a smell. That may be an issue if you work many hours in the garage like I do. Thank you for your fantastic question. Please let me know if this long ramble did not answer your question. Also please comment back what you ended up doing and the approximate temperature differential you are able to get. Would be better to test before install and after to see how much heat gain you are able to get over the outside air. Thank you, Daniel

Hello. Sorry for the political ads. I have no control over You Tube choice of ads. Thank you for watching. The reflectix still looks great and is still pliable. Thank you.
