I like the look of your zipper splines and understand they are purely decorative adding no strength. However, it should be possible to angle and cut every other spline hiding the kerf on the inside of the joint to get the zipper look and add strength. Have you thought about a technique to do that?

I was thinking to keep the same zipper look but using a jig, the cut could be made to raise or angle the board behind so the kerf looks the same on the front board but only cuts into a portion of the back board. When the joint is assembled the tenon would show in the front and then angle back into the board on the other side such that none of the kerf or tenon shows on the opposite side. If a jig could be figured out the hold the boards to make the right cuts then you’d not offset the boards cutting through the front board but angled into the back board.
