Nice and simple. Well done! I need to try this. What do you think of dowels to hold the jig together?
@industrialcomfort10 күн бұрын
Appreciate the feedback! Dowels would absolutely work but a bit overkill for a project like this. I only say that as the jig wears out pretty quickly depending on how often you're cutting splines and glue alone will do the job.

@@industrialcomfort honestly really well! Took all of 10 mins to make; less time that it took to watch most spline-making-videos. Those look great, but I really don't understand why you wouldn't just use a spline jig with your blade set to 45* - then they'd be both functional and pretty. Also would be a lot faster.
@industrialcomfort27 күн бұрын
Hi Darren - i did it this way as I didn't want to deal with the precision required getting the cuts to line up precisely. Is it possible that way, for sure! Thank you for watching!

Flush trimming the sides of the ovals - DUH! makes me feel dumb for not thinking of that haha. I rough cut on the scroll saw then tried sanding and messed it up
Thanks for the good spline designs. Couldn’t you glue the corner first, then with the blade at 45 degrees and the corner in a 45 degree spline jig, cut the kerfs so the splines would add strength?
@industrialcomfortАй бұрын
Hi Courtney - you could, yes, but keep in mind your cuts would have to be 100% precise. It is one of those things that's easier said than done. Personally I don't think that I'd ever be able to line things up cleanly enough. Your wood would need to be 100% flat and square on each plane. Wood glue is strong enough that it allegedly creates a bond that is as strong as the wood itself. Additional structural rigidity on a joint like this may not be needed.

Thank you, mate! After having used it a bunch, the recommendation I would make is to use a much thicker center screw. I used a drywall anchor screw and wish I had used something closer to 1/4". The circle jig on the bandsaw, if that's what you use, has a much wider shank so the smaller screw I used tends to swim in the hole I need to drill when i cut rounds for bowls. Please let me know how you make out.

@industrialcomfortАй бұрын
Thank you. If you're getting into the pen making game then I would start with what they call a mini lathe. Any brand will do for pens and, to be honest, I'd probably start with a Wen. They are very affordable when compared to brands like Jet, Rikon, Nova, Grizzly, etc. Hope that helped.

I really see the application of the colors. As you say, we are only limited by our "creativity" - I'm in trouble. A suggestion, when performing multiple tasks (inserting 5 splines), after the first one you might think of fast forwarding through the rest. That was about 45 seconds of the same thing. I'm not trying to bust your chops, only offering a suggestion. Thanks for all the spline videos AND the jig.

Hi. where did you buy the metal drill bit?
@industrialcomfort2 ай бұрын
Just any old bit I had in the box. The key is to keep the speed low and keep the bit lubricated. I have a lot of cheap, multipurpose bits from both Amazon and Home Depot that I use. I don't have anything very expensive. If I want a wood-specific bit then I"ll get a forstner or brad point.
@forestdamian56012 ай бұрын
Friend, do you know why I asked you? Because if you want to make a hole in a piece of steel or cast iron, you need a special drill bit. And I thought you used a special drill bit to drill the metal
@industrialcomfort2 ай бұрын
@@forestdamian5601 I should have specified that my "any old bit" I had, which was not wood-specific, was a multi-purpose bit. Meaning it can be used across a number of materials including metal.
@forestdamian56012 ай бұрын
I think if you managed to drill a hole in steel, the drill is definitely different than a normal drill bit. I tried to drill the hole with normal metal drill bits and failed to drill the hole in the steel. I broke over 10 drill bits, and I didn't succeed

It quick to have crust & grill marks turning 2 minutes at 90 degrees and place over a cold spot with 2 burners off & 2 on high to finish added cheese & pepperoni if added. (Yes, 6'3" guy eats meat). KZbin is blocking the "Comment Bar" on cell phones! PVC is great stuff for trim. I have 2 stationary windows that are slanted at the tops. $1,450 each, W/O labor is discouraging! PVC has come down in price and some are using regular PVC glue with the plug caps over screws. The sill and brick molding is rotting after 34 years. I can't tell where it stops but butts up to the glass. A vibratory cutter would make short work by installing a temp narrow filler strip the remove the old. It has a good cap but the bottom of the brick molding was never sealed wicking water up the fibers of the wood. Just looking for support as I am living here until my boots leave first. Thoughts? Thanks for the informative video. ASE Master retire / decent wood worker. Thanks!!!
