5 cabs under my belt now. I've used KILZ 2 All-Purpose primer (white) as a base with Behr Ultra Semi-Gloss (black) top coat. All applied with an HVLP sprayer. Then wrapped with 3M vinyl (sides, front, apron, dmd panel, and back box sides). So far no issues at all with peeling and the cabs look great. Thanks for the great video as always WotW!

Looking good Emil :D Absolutely gave me flashbacks to my own spraying and sanding of my cab. I sealed the wood with wood filler before painting, but I am not sure it was absolutely necessary since I used high grade ply. For paint I used (way too many) spray cans which did a fantastic job, but since I put vinyl on it, it was probably once again way overkill ;) On the visible part on the inside I actually used semi glossy black vinyl, since I found it a bit stronger when taking the playfield TV in and out. Good luck going forward. So many new tables are waiting for you when you get it all assembled again :D
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Lol...flashbacks. Sanding can do that. Yeah my cabinet grade ply was pretty smooth too. I could have spent some more time and done a couple more coats but I was really happy with the finish. Yeah I've got some catching up to do with 64 but and vpx 10.8 and the new pov. Plus the new tables...looking forward to trying Spongebob!

Thanks for your amazing videos. I'm actually at this point in my vpin build. Is there a point in using paint instead of just sticking the vinyl over the primer? Another idea I had was to get a very thin transparent acrylic sheet/plexiglass over the vinyl to protect it on all 3 sides. The sheets would be secured by the legs, siderails and the lockdown bar
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 8 күн бұрын
You're very welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying the content! Yes, primer tends to degrade and absorb moisture over time so the top coat of paint is to seal in in and the primer is used for a goof bond to the material/top coat paint.You could do that, there is actually a company that prints on plexiglass called radcals...very expensive though. Thanks for the watch!

Perfect timing. I used Aquacoat to wood-fill. Then I used clear Shellac with a couple coats with light sanding in between. It feels like glass (and looks great) but I haven't done the paint job on it yet. - I can't decide. I have a Wagner electric, but I also have a good compressor. That DeVilbiss oil sprayer looked really smooth. Dang! I now want one of those. What would you prefer?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Sweet! Glad it's available for ya to finish your vpin! If I could pick, I would only use an hvlp spray gun for everything. The finish is way better and it's fast. Lots of overspray though. The Wagner is ok but it comes out chunkier even when you thin. Have fun and thanks for the watch!

Any thoughts on hybrid paints? I've seen them recommended a lot for cabinets (in general), but I don't know if they have issues with vinyl adhering
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Are you talking about the polyurethane paints or the modified latex ones? Anything latex scares me as they are prone to breathing and lifting vinyl. I'm not 100 percent sure about them but hopefully some builders can chime in here and let people know what water based paints work well with vinyl decals. Thanks for the watch!

If you had access to a pancake compressor and wanted to paint a cabinet , knowing that most spraying rigs need a lot more CFM and you did not want to spend more than $100 - $150 US, how would you proceed? Love watching this stuff, I just built a cabinet and finishing will be coming soon! As an alternative, ever heard of ebonizing wood? Any thought on that versus painting?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
You could use the other 3 methods to paint instead (rollers, electric hvlp, or spray cans). Or you could rent a proper compressor. Or take the parts to someone to spray it. Remember almost everything gets covered by vinyl so really you're only worried about the front of the blackbox, back of blackbox and back of cabinet. I'm not sure about ebonized finishes, it's really just a preference of the look of it and whether vinyl art work will stick to it. Thanks for the watch, cheers!
