This is a complete guide for the DIY project of installing stone veneer to various indoor applications. This stone veneer was used on both my fireplace and bar area. Check out El Durado Stone for some awesome looking stone veneer! Hope you enjoyed the video and learned something along the way!

Thank you. Doing similar and most of the old timers I'd read would try to get me to scratch coat, lath, to install. I read that the Masonry guide allows concrete board interior. I much prefer working with thinset and concrete board as I'm used to it. Will use this method.

Had one quick question on your bar design. Mine is L shaped but loved the stone and the step you did. Do you know roughly the how wide you made that step? I see it is likely just under 6 inches which seems to be the recommendation on bat rail height. Appreciate any insight also understand you might not remember after that healthy size drink :)

Yea I liked the stone step vs a rail like a lot of people do. It was over 6 inches I think, but not by much. Probably 7-8 inches

I don't have a lot of experience with cement board, but I have a shed that the walls were covered with cement board. One of the walls has a hole. Maybe 12" by 6" hole. Can I use wire mesh to patch it and maybe place cheap veneer or something over it to fix it? It doesn't have to be pretty as it's on a side not visible. Trying to figure out ideas how to fix it as I don't have anyone to help me
@LifeofBliss

I would think stapling or screwing in that mesh and then going over it with some mortar would be sufficient to patch it

Yes it did fill between. You would need to use some sort of waterproof sheathing behind the stone as water can still get in behind it. Something like zip board, the your backing and rock on top of that

Hey, great video. Perfect for when I build my bar. Could you estimate the cost of this wet/dry as a DIY. I’m sure the stone is 3/4 of the price. Thanks
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. When you are talking about cost, do you mean just the short half wall for the bar? Or the entire bar including cabinets, counters, etc? The stone really wasn't too expensive itself. I bought extra when doing the fireplace to cover this area, but I'd say $400 of stone and bacjerboard/thinset would more than cover the area. Other components of the bar cost much more. I'll have a video out soon of the total cost breakdown after adding the dishwasher.

I have a breakfast bar the about the same size. Do i have put cement board over the drywall, or, could i just cement stones over the drywall?
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Peter, really depends on what product you use and what it calls for. This particular stone is fairly heavy and needed the cement board. There are some products that are very thin and light that are ok using the drywall. Definitely read the manufacturers suggestions for the substrate. If in doubt, it would be hard to cut out the sheet rock and replace with cement board just to be safe!
@fd3871
@fd3871 5 жыл бұрын
i wouldn't apply directly to drywall... it is fine if you are doing a backsplash and using lightweight subway tiles, but this stone would probably pull the paper (drywall is gypsum sandwiched between two paper sheets) right off and the stone along with it. better remove the drywall and replace with cement board. it really would be only a small amount of work for extra piece of mind. you wouldn't even need any special tools to do it ;)

Do you any sharable plans for how you built your bar? Dimensions and measurements of the frame? I love the layout but I'm not sure I could recreate it.
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kapn, I don't have any plans per say outside of just some rough dimensional sketches I made so I had a game plan going into it. I can give you some measurements though to get a good idea of the layout... the whole bar area from side to side is about 9 foot. The bartop area with the stone front is 6 foot wide, allowing a 3 foot walkway into the bar. The bartop is also about 8 foot off of the back wall. With standard depth counters, this gave a walkway of about 3.5 feet behind the bar. Hopefully that all makes sense... your sizes would vary based on your area, but the walkway behind the bar area is very comfortable for 2 or more people to move around at the 3.5 foot width.

@@LifeofBliss Not sure if you monitor this any more. I believe what this person was asking and what I am interested in is the height and width of the bar along. How high did you make the knee wall for the bar. I do like how you laid this out and discussed the walk thru traffic. If you happen to remember would love to hear what the actually framing dimensions was for the bar. Along with for the foot pedestal area.
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 3 жыл бұрын
I went over the build of the short bar wall in the framing videos of the build process. Essentially it was just 2x6 that just tied into the full wall to the right. I just looked at what a standard bar height counter would be and made it roughly that high minus the thickness of the bar top. You don't have to be exact, you can make it shorter or taller depending on preference. The width of the bar was about 6 ft wide

Life of Bliss I just wanted to install stone similar to your on a built in bbq grill frame in my backyard. It’s pretty small in size, about 52” wide by 22” deep by 33” high. I have the stone and mortar. I have done significant DIY projects, i.e., built a roof over my porch, small kitchen remodel, including spraying cabinets, finished basement, including framing, plumbing, some electrical, etc. BUT, for some reason (the stone part) this project intimidates me because if it doesn’t come out right or isn’t level, the mistakes are so obvious and glaring. So I looked around to see what it would cost to have someone do it and got a quote of $500, negotiated down to $350. The guy is supposed to start on Monday. I built the metal frame, installed the durock, ran electrical for inside and outside outlet, cut holes in durock for venting and now I’m intimidated to do the stone. Lol. I’m sitting here wondering if I should start on it and just do it or wait til Monday and hand it off. Anyway, sorry for the long post. Lol.
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man I hear ya. It's definitely something permanent and you'd want it looking nice! Nothing wrong with paying $350 for that. I paid someone to tile my basement shower. Didn't feel comfortable enough doing all of that, plus it was a huge time investment... do what you can, pay for the rest 😂
