These are some fast growing tomatoes! They have tripled in height in the last two weeks, and I’m expecting to see tomatoes in the next couple of weeks. By the I planted these 4 weeks before the last frost, so it has not been the ideal conditions for these guys, so it’s surprising to still see how fast these hydroponic tomatoes have grown! To compare, last year I planted tomatoes two weeks earlier in the soil, under low Tunnels, and they were only half this size by now! I am excited to see the growth next year when if I can get them planted in the system a few weeks earlier lord willing!
This diy hydroponic system is incredibly cheap and simple to setup. You can scale it up or down to fit your needs.
The technique in the video is called slab culture hydroponics, and basically it’s a raised bed in a bag. The slab is filled with coconut coir, and a plant is started in a rock wool block, and then placed on the slab. The plants are irrigated several times a day via a pump, reservoir, and drip spike.
The benefits of hydroponics are seemingly endless:
- 25-50% faster growth
- conserve water - hydroponic gardens use up to 90% less water - gardening in a drought!
- conserve nutrients - 75% less fertilizer is fed to the hydroponic plants vs field grown
- weed free gardening
- no till gardening
- herbicide free
- reduced pest pressure
- grow disease free tomatoes
- can grow like a pro if you have poor soil
- more ergonomic
- space saving intensive gardening

Nice! Please let me know if you have any questions/ideas for videos. Good luck on the nft system, did you see my video on my nft build? I have 150 channels currently, and I have an aeration system I would recommend as well, please check them out. Great solution for growing tomatoes. I would like to develop very similar thing. May I ask that the rockwool is not poisonous for the plants and later for whom who are eating it? And please let me know what are the ingredients of the water? And where did you get the tools for the pipe? I mean the spaghetti pipes that are connected to the half inches main tube. Thank you!

The Rockwool is not considered omri but it is essentially just melted rock that’s spun into a cotton candy like texture. An alternative to a setup like this would be to just use grow bags , and then use your favorite compost/garden soil/perlite you name it. Then you can control exactly what material you would like to use. I am currently using woodchips in my grow bags. I purchased the tool form floraflex, I will try to post the links floraflex.com/default/flora-micro-hole-puncher?gclid=Cj0KCQjwpcOTBhCZARIsAEAYLuUyi0I8wF9ZQUDCqakO6liUATn9tmkezZLe-KprYGMFZ0Tjp8l56v4aAjraEALw_wcB

Are there any specific mold or bug issues after some time e? How do you take care of that
@SaludaGradeFarm
@SaludaGradeFarm Жыл бұрын
Yes there are, you can get fungus gnats, horn worms, white flies, and all sorts of things. Generally, I use azaguard from Johnny seeds. This is pretty expensive, but it does the trick. Alternatively you can use pyganic, neem oil, or spinosad as less expensive organic options.

Hey Brother, what do you think the cost per kilogram... to grow a kilogram... or pound or whatever is for these tomatoes. How much are you going to sell them for?
@SaludaGradeFarm
@SaludaGradeFarm Жыл бұрын
The cost ranges depending on your setup, how much you have to heat, and yields, but on a medium size greenhouse like this, I plan to get my plants in by March 1st, and we have a few cold days that I will have to heat my greenhouse. My total operating costs are about $2500a year, including greenhouse variety seeds (.50 cents - $1 each). My expected yields are about 15,000 lbs, and I sell my tomatoes for $2-$4 a lbs depending on if I’m wholesaling or retailing. Hope this helped!

You cant compare plants when they are not even the same variety

I agree! I had Another plant of the same variety but I grabbed this one instead. Please notice that I said “this is the size of the older plant when I transplanted it” it was merely a reference for size comparison, not a scientific experiment.
