These are some fast growing tomatoes! They have tripled in height in the last two weeks, and I’m expecting to see tomatoes in the next couple of weeks. By the I planted these 4 weeks before the last frost, so it has not been the ideal conditions for these guys, so it’s surprising to still see how fast these hydroponic tomatoes have grown! To compare, last year I planted tomatoes two weeks earlier in the soil, under low Tunnels, and they were only half this size by now! I am excited to see the growth next year when if I can get them planted in the system a few weeks earlier lord willing!
This diy hydroponic system is incredibly cheap and simple to setup. You can scale it up or down to fit your needs.
The technique in the video is called slab culture hydroponics, and basically it’s a raised bed in a bag. The slab is filled with coconut coir, and a plant is started in a rock wool block, and then placed on the slab. The plants are irrigated several times a day via a pump, reservoir, and drip spike.
The benefits of hydroponics are seemingly endless:
- 25-50% faster growth
- conserve water - hydroponic gardens use up to 90% less water - gardening in a drought!
- conserve nutrients - 75% less fertilizer is fed to the hydroponic plants vs field grown
- weed free gardening
- no till gardening
- herbicide free
- reduced pest pressure
- grow disease free tomatoes
- can grow like a pro if you have poor soil
- more ergonomic
- space saving intensive gardening
