Hey. I watched part 1 and loved it so of course I had to watch part 2. :) With your large collection, I can see why you needed the built-ins. Your choice of trim is so simple and clean, and very masculine in my eyes. I love it! I'm drooling over how well this turned out. It's just downright impressive. A real showcase. The colour choice is bangin'. Makes everything on display just pop. BTW, I cringed when you drilled to hang the picture but the gold frame looks great against the dark backdrop. Well done.

My design style is not for everyone. We recently just moved into this home after having a very small home for seven years and I couldn’t afford to nor did I have the space to house a ton of books. I am collecting overtime and it’s taking time because I want to collect books that I’m actually going to read so that’s why you’re not seeing 1000 books on the wall yet

I'm sorry but I'm dumbfounded by all the comments gushing over this. Imo you did an amazing job to build this piece which elevated the home and looked expensive, only to fill it with crap. It looks like Home Goods vomited all over it. The purpose for a LIBRARY is, um, BOOKS -- how about putting books there? I am not saying you shouldn't have an occasional vase or other piece, but this is a hideosity. And ruining the millwork to hang a picture ON THE FRAME OF THE BOOKSHELF has got to be the ugliest, dumbest "design" idea I've ever heard of. I honestly want to get a giant trashbag and throw out everything on those shelves. This is not style, it's a giant curio cabinet of junk. Get rid of it. Use it as it was intended.

Beautiful bookcases, but -YIKES-too much stuff, you need more books! Just a little tip for anyone doing this look, style with lots of books first, staggering the pattern of book placement first, ie: books to the left of shelf, then flat laydowns, next shelf down books to right of shelf and laydowns in front of those to the left, next shelf down -- books in middle of shelf with bookends to hold in place,…….fill in book shelves with books and a few bookends, step back and see where a focal piece should be, or where you can prop up books where the cover is gorgeous to show off………and have sections of a similar subject grouped together……you can even use decorative boxes full of photos or hidden toys on lower shelves…..you will see how your eyes feel comfortable scanning the books and where a little item here and there will add interest. If you don’t have lots of books buy the door and add to bottom of each shelf, then you can use that storage for anything.

@@PeonyandHoney actually collecting books is not that expensive. Almost every library I know of has sales all the time and usually books for free as well. You can get a lot of classic literature this way. Same with antique or thrift shops for old books, if that's your thing. Yes new best seller hard covers are expensive. I would think you'd already have a lot of books if you built a unit like that. 😊
@phookaziz3 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure it was a lot of work, for you and all your crew (including dad and other helpers), and you should feel proud of completing a project together. I know this will be seen as undue criticism by others, but it was published for public consumption and comment. This just doesn't make sense to me. After spending 2K plus on lumber, trim, and moulding, would it really have been that much more to just scratch build the shelves and secure directly to the studs of the wall? If I'm seeing the previous video correctly you've also left at least one electrical outlet behind the MDF backing boards with no way to access it. Depending on where you're building this could be a violation of local building/fire codes and a very real fire hazard. In a previous comment you replied that at the time of recording you did not have the need for this storage as you didn't have the books to use the space and thus the need to "style" it as a library. From my personal experience this is a library look that is much more based on film and tv notions than an over abundance of time delving into the stacks. That said, if you're going this far and using the shelves more as a display space, why not go the full nine yards and finish the shelves with in shelf lighting (DIY LED strips and wiring the circuits or premade lighting units) and glass doors that mitigate the dust accumulation on your various tchotchkes and books.
@PeonyandHoney Жыл бұрын
Firstly, we priced out building from scratch vs IKEA as our basic framing and it would have cost over $700 more building from scratch. The other factor in play is that my dad and friend were only able to come out for a few days so this project had to be executed in a very quick timeline. I was able to prep all the bookcases ahead of time which saved us hours of work when we started. We had one of the outlets fully removed to code and the other we pulled forward so we have access to it. I plan on collecting books for many years to come in this forever home, so it will evolve over time. The real message here is it’s in my home and I love it. Don’t like it? No biggie, don’t put it in your home.
