DIY In-Ground Trampoline: On A Budget

We searched for months for a trampoline that met our specifications….. we gave up looking and a few months later saw an ad for just what we wanted at a killer deal. We bought this 10’x 17’ trampoline from Upper Bounce. We like to bury our trampolines. It makes it easier for smaller kids to access, and you don’t have to worry about a gust of wind carrying away. Not to mention it’s just more esthetically pleasing. We rented a mini-ex to dig our hole and used a transit as our guide. We acquired a load of free pallets which is all we used on this build. We used the beefier pieces to build onto the trampoline frame and the slats to create our retention wall. We used deck screws to assemble the frame to avoid corrosion. It’s a great idea to coat the lumber in a some sort of wood protectant. Being on a budget we made the call to return the mini-ex as soon as our hole was dug and manually shoveled for the back filling phase. We left the pad off of the springs to allow better air flow and optimum bounce. The net keeps the kids off the springs and from falling down our hill. We’re so happy with this project and the endless hours of safe, fun and fresh air it will provide for our crazy crew!

What do you think you have in it for cost? That exact same trampoline is for sale at Scheels sporting good at just about $600 but I’m wondering what you have for other materials looks like sand and lumber. Did you bring a backhoe in to dig because I would have to in Arizona the grounds too hard to dig with the shovel anyway just looking for a ballpark estimate on cost.

Only cost was backhoe rental and the trampoline. We used free pallets for retention wall as mentioned in the video. It wasn’t anymore than $400 for the backhoe rental, and then we paid around $1000 for the trampoline so $600 is a great deal! I want to do this for my grandchildren. I keep hearing that I need to be concerned about it becoming a snake pit. Any suggestions on how to avoid the underneath area becoming a snake pit? Have you ever heard of this? I live in Colorado (rattlesnakes).

We’re in Colorado as well. We have only encountered one rattler in the past year and a half up at the property, and it wasn’t under our trampoline. No suggestions from us at this point but if that is something we face we will update here:) Goodluck with your project!

We touch on that very thing in the video. The slope of the ground around the trampoline should shed a majority of moisture- and it shouldn’t be an issue considering you should only be accumulating the precipitation that is falling directly above the opening. If you live in an area where the water table is higher and you receive crazy amounts of moisture here are some options…. Depending on the layout of the property, you can run a pipe to redirect moisture to a lower elevation area. You can also install a sump pump to pump out water if it becomes an issue.

I don’t remember exactly how much we paid for the trampoline but around $1000. They didn’t sell them on Amazon back when we were shopping, but now they do sell them and for around what we paid if not a little cheaper:)
