I install a £35 ebay quick shifter in my 2000 Porsche 986 Boxster. Same process for a Porsche 911 - 996 model

Great video....I must of had 2” of play in old shifter. Unreal now. And yes....green plate has to be removed. Took about 2 hours, taking my time

Thanks for feedback. It certainly makes gear selection more positive. Took a few trips out to get use to the shorter throw. At first it feels like it's not gone into gear because its only 50% of the original travel.

Time to buy the Numeric branded shifter cables I guess.. they will never break unlike the OEM.

Very useful for the install.. couldn't do it without yr vid...thx..and very importantly... you have proven that this cheap ebay Chinese part for once is actually decent quality..and works very well..save yourself £300 compared with the numeric short shifter.. I know there are different animals..but still for 30 quid thats amazing.

So the plastic square from the old shifter's horizontal ball joint isn't transferred to the new mechanism and you just let a round ball joint flap about in a rectangular hole? That can't be right.

great vid, very informative, thank you! I've had one of these kits sitting on a shelf for a year or two now, going to attempt it on my 987 this weekend i think, I assumed it was much harder than this. Good tip on flipping for RHD cars too I might have missed that if you didn't say

I’m interested in the original shift mechanism, not what I expected. I hate removing trim from modern vehicles always feels like it’s about to break off and never goes back on the same. Regards Chris

yes quite an underwhelming piece of plastic! Obviously well designed and manufactured, but you know if this was a vintage shiftier it would have been a piece of beauty just to look at! Could have been garage wall art

Hi, Really like your video over the rest on You tube. Did you go back and adjust the quick shifter (slaken off) or did you leave as it was when you installed? Also do you think the play in the shifter when it was new may of reduced the notchiness? Thanks Moth

Thanks for very nice feedback. I haven't adjusted since I installed. Thinking it may loosen. However it still feels a little tight so I when I get it back on the road in spring I may back off a little. Other than that it makes a nice improvement to the driving experience.

I've been contemplating between Ben's Short Shift Kit that is mentioned quite a bit on 986forum or going with one of the eBay options. Would you say the cheaper option is definitely a decent unit and worthy?

I hadn't heard of the Ben kit. However it looks very similar and wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the same. All being made in China. The ebay kit works fine for me. It does increase the amount of effort needed to shift. But that's obvious as laws of leverage. Mines been fine since fitting. It does fell slightly notchy and I've read others have said that about the Ben kit. Again making me think it's the same. I've had shirt shifters on other cars and all will increase effort to shift. It's the same principle as where you add a long bar to a spanner to undo a bolt it multiples the effort and a stubby spanner needs more effort. It's a trade off for the shorter shift. The ebay one is all metal with roller bearings. So looks the same.

Hello, I just installed this. I marked the cable lines with a marker and everything looks like it's in place correctly when I put them back together. I can engage all gears except for reverse. Any ideas?

I know this is a year old but for anyone else, like me, the problem was the fore/aft adjustment. In my case I needed to adjust the fore/aft allen & nuts a couple mm aft. Just those couple mm allowed a little more clearance for the stick to swing to the right and up to engage reverse. I saw on Amazon that some used a dremel on the plastic to make this clearance but the adjustment worked for me.

I recieved my shifter kit last week and have the same play issue as you, what you're saying is all that's needed to do to reduce the play is take it apart and grease up the insides? No shims or whatever necessary? Great video by the way!

A combination of the grease and adjusting the end caps took out all the play on mine. Thanks for comments

Since no one else commented, the rallye wheels look great on it. Is it a Dart or Scamp? Nice job on the video, figured I'd try a cheaper ebay version before stepping up to a $150 - $200 setup.

Just wondering why there is a big difference in prices for these shifters?Are some better than others?

I think big difference at one time was it was all new and someone did the development and research to make the parts. But once it out there and copied the price tumbles. As for quality. Its simply a piece of steel. Some plastic bits and roller bearing that don't need to be great quality as no load or speed on the rotating parts.

For example, the Bens short shifter has bearings.
