I was more concerned that when you put the ground lead of your multimeter into the hot side, and the positive lead of your multimeter into the neutral, but your meter did not display a negative symbol, since the polarity was backwards....

I don't believe it works that way on AC. It does on DC.

Great video. Exactly what I was looking for. Question? Can you use the same setup to see the sine wave for a 240v generator/ inverter? or would the voltage be too high?

I have the exact same DSO150 oscilliscope and the 10 x probe.

I'd have to double check the specs. But it will be the same at 120v as 240v. Might need a different probe. Like maybe a 20x

@@mrmotofy That's kind of what I was asking. If the probe is 10 x, does that mean it reduces the voltage by a factor of 10? Say 12 v for 120 and 24v for 240? such that the DSO150's max 50V wouldn't be exceeded? I need to make sure my 240v inverter generator at the cabin is in fact putting out pure sine wave power before I want to take a chance and charge my EV with it.

@@jnelson8629 That's the way I understand it. If it's an inverter generator then I'd say there's a 95% it is pure sine. How good of one who knows. If you put a meter on it for AC check ground to 1 hot leg you should get 120v so it should work that way. Just be careful as the ground is hot but for testing it's ok

@@jnelson8629 Normally in a home the ground and neutral are bonded at the main breaker panel/meter. So you get 240v across 2 hot leads and 120v across hot to neutral/ground in most cases. Generators may have a bonded ground or may be separated. Can verify by checking for voltage. Without knowing where in the world you are it's hard to know what you should have.

Thank you, sir. Great video. My interests encompass both solar and wind generation and oscilloscopes. I have found a few diy ebay 36v pure sign wave inverters to piece together I want to use them around my home using my 40v 6ahr ryobi batteries (20 of them). wanted to check out the inverters waveform and verify the claims made from China. Very useful video. Thanks.

Yep...I've wanted to for a long time. Borrowed an old Oscope from a friend to try it....4000 different knobs and switches...he didn't know how to do it on there either...Now there's an easier way for us not so skilled guys. I'm posting a new vid of a Famous Honda EU2000 sine wave
