Thought about buying a Nilight led whip light like for a jeep and make it my 360° white light for my Yak.

How long it last battery

Really depends on what battery you run. I ran these for 5-6 hours on a standard 7amp hour UPS battery.

Easier to get marine heat shrink - it comes with glue already in it. That glue is going to fall off in a few seasons.

Sure if you are buying new. I have had this stuff for many years and it has to be used up at some point. The glue will more than likely out last the LED strips. My original kayak still has the glue and LEDs on it and that has been 6-7 years. The silicone in the LEDs will likely cloud up in about 3 years which is why I choose hot glue over other attachment methods . I can peel these up and replace them quickly.
