DIY Kindling Cracker / Log Splitter from Rebar

Күн бұрын

In this video I will show you how to build a Kindling Cracker / Log Splitter from Rebar.
The Cracker/Splitter was made entirely out of reclaimed rebar pieces and its base is made out of an old Olive tree trunk.
A very strong structure which can easily split even large sized wood logs.
At the same time it is a very simple structure to make at a very low cost.
Hope you enjoy the video and always remember....Rust is Gold!

Definitely - the best version of this system of splitter - one of the very best examples of mechanical engineering for a relatively simple piece - one of the best shot and edited, and best *paced* videos on KZbin. If I were you though, I wouldn't use it as a *log* splitter, as it is only blunting the blade, and over time deteriorating the integrity of the piece unnecessarily. A simple axe splitting a log in the centre of an old tyre, is far more efficient and allows more power to be utilised for bigger logs. Also, as this is supposed to be about efficiency, and speeding up jobs in our lives, shouldn't you just sit in some collection system? - like one of those big "leaf collector" bags I've seen, in order quickly and efficiently funnel the kindling into another storage bag or wicker basket or whatever. Anyway, overall very impressed with your skills, attention to detail and quality of workmanship both in mechanics / crafting, and video production. Well done :)

Awesome idea and nice video. I have worked in the structural steel industry for 20+ years and I will caution everyone out there about welding your average everyday rebar. Because of the way it is manufactured the structure of the metal in the rebar makes it difficult to get solid penetration and the metal has a tendency to become very, very brittle around the welded areas and therefore prone to cracking and failure of the weld. They make a specific grade of rebar that is specifically made so that it can be welded without the worry of this problem occurring. Please periodically check your welds for signs of cracking and repair if found.

Good for her! Smart kid! I never claimed that this was something I invented. I only made a DIY video of how to build a kindling cracker out of scrap metal parts. I don't sell my creations. My channel is a DIY KZbin channel not an e-Shop to place orders. Have you noticed the dozens of similar DIY kindling cracker videos that exist on KZbin?

I was just going to leave a positive comment about this dude building something instead of buying it, but due to this condescending comment I may just do some patent violations of my own. Might even sell a few to some neighbors. You’re aware that patents and copyrights only apply in the country they were filed in, right? Even if this dude wanted to build and sell his wood splitters, he would be well within his rights to do so in his country. Some people’s kids...

there are several on the market that are just as functional. Of course you don't get the sense of satisfaction when you make your own, but for less than $100 you can have one of these delivered to your door. And if you don't weld, there is a kindling splitter that you can make that uses a Hi-Lift jack. It also works quite well.

@@RustisGold Hi, I was laying in bed thinking of what I want, and I think a couple of deflector pans attached to the blade angling down, would direct the pieces of wood out of the way, rather than getting caught below or scattering. If the unit was on a base that did not project out on the sides> a bin could be placed below on the sides to catch wood. These days, before I start building or dis-assembling, I like to go the YT and see what the pioneers did. Mike

Thought you were a welder for a few seconds, until I saw the welds that is! But it's of no consequence, I wish to take nothing away from you, but I bet the wooden base you so lovingly made, is split in halves already as it was almost in two bits to start with! You are right though, anybody with a few cheap tools can do it, a welder is not much money, arc, gasless, Ebay for buttons and forget the fine finishing for something that is probably left outside anyway. Keep up the innovation and good work, well done.

every tool has it's purpose. I use firewood to cook with in a horizontal smoker. I buy wood already splt, but I have to break it down into smaller sticks because consistent temperatures are essential, and smoldering wood ruins the meat. Call me a city slicker all you want, I make mouth-watering BBQ and having a tool like this is an important part of it. Over the years I've used table saws, band saws, and a contraption with a jack and a blade. This is the best one for the purpose. Again, I'm not splitting logs, I'm re-splitting already cut pieces.
