DIY Leather Flip Flops
It's summer time, which means getting out of the shop and out to the beach. But my flip flops were beat, and I needed a new pair. Time to make some!

Top and bottom layer are ~6oz veg tanned leather, two inner layers forming the contoured surface are lightweight (~2-3oz?) suede splits, and the sole is semi-hard traction rubber. The straps are ~4oz oil-tanned pullup.

Let the machine move the work, and you will break needles less often. Don't try to force it to move.

​@BreakingTaps ... would love to see (meaning i and others would watch) or if you posted picts/video of how the leather flip-flops look after "breaking them in" after wearing for a while, and if you would think there are any improvements or recommendations for changes to your diy video and process if you were going to make another pair? (Do it all again) ... I'm not being critical of your work, but just wonder if you have noticed if there are any things you would change or not (assessments are a good part of good manufacturing or scientific process improvements). The follow-up would support the value of the hard work done in the diy video, which I think should prove itself versus those mass produced synthetic flip-flops which do not last as long as wearers expect or experience. Yeah, I debated that too. Wasn't certain the patcher would go through the rubber in addition to the leather, and came to the same conclusion: if they come loose I can always try sewing them on. Thanks for watching!

An update! After a full summer of use, one of the soles is starting to peel a bit. I'm going to tack it back on with glue, but probably stitch it down in the future. Lesson learned I suppose! :)

Did you have an idea how to make kit work with a pedal i was thinking to use golf kart pedal ?

I bought a sewing machine pedal but never wired it up. I think they are basically potentiostats, so wouldn't be too hard to wire that into the PWM generator (which uses a potentiostat under the knob). But yeah, never got around to doing it myself :)

Not really, they have held up well! I might have used a thicker piece of leather for the straps... they have stretched a little bit. But otherwise the flip flops are still doing great, still wearing them :)

What did you use for the soles and where can it be bought please? I love the sandals. I am in the process of making a pair of my own and was going to get a huge pair of flip flops from the dollar store to cut down and use as soles but I think yours look a lot more sturdy.

There are similar and cheaper varieties if you look around a little on Amazon/eBay :) Goodluck! I'm still wearing these same flip-flops, they've held up well so far :)

hey there, look for VIBRAN, they are the best, little pricey but strong as hell. Also look for SOLETECH it's cheaper and super strong too. Mine is lasting a long time. get the 6mm is a good one .
