DIY Limecrete Floor - Part 1: Excavation - #18

We've been busy for some time working away in the house and finally have something to show for it. Join us for the first part in a series of renovation videos as we start the process of laying a new floor in our old Portuguese farm house.
To lay a limecrete floor we first need to dig out to accommodate all the layers. That meant digging out 400mm (over a foot) of earth and clay and moving it bucket by bucket.
Join us for some good old fashioned digging timelapse and an explanation of what a limecrete floor is and why we're installing one in this old wine making room.

These areas under the main room where wine was made and stored were called "adegas" (cellars), like the one you explained. But the others are called "lojas" (shops) and it was where the ancients kept food for cattle, all utensils for work in the fields and agriculture and store cereals, potatoes, beans, etc, etc. Good work, great workers, fantastic content, as always.

Next time you need to move the barrel, fill it with water and let it sit over night. The next day, empty it and then lay it on it's side and just roll it to where ever you want it. When the wood gets hydrated it becomes more compact and air tight making it more solid. Also even if you don't plan on moving it, fill it with water and let it sit over night in all the same it looks very dry and could start attracting termites. Edit: Just finished watching the whole video. Great work guys! You are doing a good job and like they say, Rome wasn't built in a day. So keep at it, you will get there. Sugestion: Look around at the local builders (the bigger ones) many have their own "shops" or in the least will sell you materials and also hire equipment.

I think you’re referring to the finished flooring .... if so, we’ve not thought that far ahead. It needs to be breathable, so probably a stone of some sorts, ideally large flagstones, but it will very much depend what we can find/source. There’s also the issue of what to use to bed them in, and grout around them ....

It's amazing to see all the renovation you're doing by yourselves. In Portuguese, we call those little clay balls argila expandida. I've never seen those used on the floor. I just use it for drainage in plant vases. I cover them with geotextile and then earth mixed with compost so that the plants don't get too soaked in water. It looks like the logic for the floor is the same. I'm looking forward to seeing how you'll do it.
