Hi Mate, you might change the traverse for the router mounting plate to a down under mount instead of mounting it on top (the plate, not the machine for shure). Benefits: the Triton gets closer to the workpiece (better mementum - increased precision), you might not need the shaft extension, the dust extraction of the router works better, and the pieces are not spread all over the rails (place, shirt, everywhere). Just an idea.

Hi Oliver, I am interested in your suggestion. How do you suggest mounting the router plate to be below the transverse rails in JND's video set up using 4 SBR ??- UU rails ? The only way I can come up with is to mount the router tray in the bottom of a fabricated MDF box that fits in between the transverse SBR UU rail mounting blocks and have a flat plate to join the top of the sides of the new box, across to the top of the SBR UU blocks. My recent made router sled setup ( took 5 versions to perfect - trail and error) is similar but uses different transverse rails to mount the blocks underneath the rail. You can't do that directly with SBR16 rails due to the rails fixed base getting in the way. My sled uses the following for the Transverse "X-axis" router slider 2 x 16mm diameter Chrome Plated Steel Shafts, 4 x SCS16UU Bearing Blocks, 4 x SK16 Fixed end Supports. The sled mounting plate is similar as JND's - I used tougher 8mm thick Polycarb - bought from Bunnings - Au (JND said he used persplex) cut to size to which the router bottom plate is screwed to. This less brittle polycarb plate is secured to the 4x SCS16UU - their mount holes facing down. The SK16's are screwed to the longitudinal "Y axis" SBR16 -1000mm rails and their upward facing SBR16UU sliding mount blocks using an adapter plate joining 2 SBR16UU blocks on the same rail. The 2 adapter plates each end ensures the 2 Y-axis rails run parallel when sling on the x-axis rails without binding. I think JND ran into this problem when he said he had a "racking issue" - that the x-axis blocks weren't running nicely. Heard at the 5:05 time code. A poly /wooden plate joining the 2 blocks running on the same rail would solve that problem. Just make sure they are wide enough to accommodate the router slider plate. I used clear Poly so as to see the screw holes in the alloy blocks better, to assist drilling the correctly/accurately positioned holes in the 8mm thick Poly. I tapped out all holes to thread 5mm. M5 bolts screwed into both surfaces. I found the 16mm rails are stiff enough as I use a much lighter DeWalt 18V plunger router. I don' t do resurfacing/ flattening. My router sled is used to make multiple exact and precise parallel routs/ grooves for some of my projects eg pen display cases. If I was to use this heavier 2400W Triton router I would advise using 20mm rails. I think JND's project I think he is using 16 ..not 12mm especially if the TV rails span 1200mm - 12mm would have sufficient flex to create an uneven surface for its use as a flattening sled.

Thanks Rod! You’re bang on there mate, it does need stops. Since this video I’ve added a couple of big screws to stop the router coming off. I’ll think about something more permanent though!

Look at dust shoes for CNC'S. The brush strips they use would be good for dust collection, they'll allow the sled to move in any direction, while keeping the dust in for the collector to pick up.

I would think that building a rig that lowers the entire router closer to the surface would be better than using an extension. I would think the more you extend the length of the router, the more deflection you would see. Just curious if that happened or if it gave you a pretty smooth finish.

It actually gave a really good finish mate. I had a little bit of deflection from the weight on the rails, so I’ll be looking to upgrade those to a thicker rail eventually. But the slight uneven surface from the deflection is easily sanded out.

Few ideas, dog holes and liner clamps for workpiece holding, will save you the hot glue and remove the need for double sided tape. Secondly, you might want to keep an eye on the load bearing MDF you've mounted the linier rails to. Guaruntee it will weaken and sag with the heavy router on there. (Unless the rails are steel and super rigid, either way, ply might be a better option. you've spent this much on it, I'd be scrapping all the MDF for something nicer :P) Great work mate! If you don't sell the rails locally let me know, I dont _need_ them... but Im sure i could find a use for them :P

Yeah I need to impove the hold down method. I dont know if dog holes would work though, theyd need to be in the bench below also. Im thinking of replacing the MDF with steel angle eventually i think. You live and learn hahaha.

Bigger sheet of plastic, build dust collection port. Maybe put a 2.5 to 4.5 adapter and caulk or glue into hole 🤷🏻‍♂️

Or - since you have a lot of open space under the router plate, you could probably mount a dust collector under there. Probably better down there where the dust is being generated than at the level as the router.

I woulda flipped the top rails to hang down, then put the rail sliders on the top of the plexiglass, so the router wasn't sliding on top, but would hang and slide underneath, that way you wouldn't need a longer distance from the router to the material you are working with. Just my 2 cents...

Really bloody well hey! I was a bit nervous to begin with, but at the end of the day I use hot glue to hold pieces spinning at 2000 rpm on the lathe. So I shouldn’t have hesitated 😂

I am going to be using this type of setup on some relatively thin pieces of wood (starting at ~.5" and going down to about .3" total thickness to flatten and was wondering on how I could hold them in place. I am thinking a granite slab and then hot glue the edges of the piece to it. One other question - you reference another video on a dust collection method for this setup - did you make that video?

@@jasonherrington2002 being so thin I’d be a little nervous using granite myself. Just in case something happens and your cutter hits it. At least MDF won’t destroy your cutter. I haven’t yet made that video, no. Life has gotten in the way a little 😂 it’s still on my to do list, but I’m working on a few other projects at the moment so it’s taken a back seat unfortunately

There is no website mate. The guy hasn’t set up a website he just sells through his Instagram page. It’s pretty quick to set up an Instagram page if you want to grab one.

Hi Brad, These are the ones I got mate, however I would NOT recommend buying through these mob. It was a massive hassle. @@charlessas4138 from memory they are 10 or 12mm mate. Not at the shop at the moment so can’t check for sure but they are thinner than I expected. Not sure what world I was in when I ordered them. There was a tiny amount of flex, that’s why I added the mdf under the cross rails which sorted it out. For piece of mind I will probably upgrade this to steel in the future. No flex from the acrylic

@@justinkayce9811 yeah if I did it again I would probably double the rail thickness. I’m getting about .5-1mm sag in spots. Nothing I can’t sand out, but it’s there. 20mm rails would fix it I think.
