I need to get this done on my own, however, I need the professionals to come for 2 things. 1- remove the roof supports that lean on the two middle walls. 2- electrics. Apart from this, I'd love fo think that I'm capable of getting all the rest done on my own. I used to think RSJ's are mandatory, but I better check this again now.

Dave Judd surely his architect specified all materials and fixing methods, inline with whatever regs were at the time. Of the inspector has refused to sign it off a claim could be made against the architect. Also the new builds next to me have no fire door between the first floor la landing and 2nd floor bedroom, just an open staircase as this guy has done. It must be acceptable if it's being done in brand new houses?

Well done it's a tough hot dirty job converting a loft , I think the most important part is explaining the importance of making sure your staircase position is compliant. I've 2m headroom on the stairs which is achievable because your stair is below the ridge. Also some people don't realise the regs state you need a 30min fire door on the loft room and existing doors may need to be up graded or replaced by fire doors giving 20mins protection. The layout of the existing house is also critical. If you have an open plan layout at ground floor you may have to install sprinklers and a fire door at the head of the stairs.
@diydan1394
@diydan1394 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yeah it is a challenge to meet all the regs the stair case position was a difficult decision but like you say easy clear headspace and less disruption to the floor below. Thank you for your comments 😊

I have the same layout of house, I’m considering where stairs might go and with this size of house there’s very little choice. Main consideration is that you’re conserving space on 1st floor by placing stairs above stairs below.
@diydan1394
@diydan1394 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that was the reason for doing it this way, it just caused less disruption to the house. You also need a certain amount of headspace above as you walk up the stairs and a landing area at the base and top... Lots of different factors to consider the downside to having them in the centre is that it takes up the middle of the room. For us it separated the room into two half's.

Why must they think your daft Stuart? Do you do your own dental work, surgery, mechanical work, conveyancing, accountancy, electrical work, gas engineering, hair dressing, chiropidy, window cleaning, brickwork, painting and decorating, tailoring, train driving, gardening, Travel agency? Do they all think your daft? Because Dan did his own loft conversion, that somehow justifies calling all builders rip off merchants or cowboys. Also its a Kids room at best, where is the double bed and the wardrobes going to go, any one over 6ft is going to have to stoop as soon as they step round the staircase. maybe nursery or storage is more appropriate.

on your supporting timbers arent they supposed to be rsj's that go into the actual wall and then you side them with timbers you can then fasten your spanning floor joists from? i dont think just putting a bolt through a piece of wood into the brick is the best way of doing it, id rarther the room weight be resting on a rsj sat on brick then the whole weight be sat on a bunch of bolts
@thedeuce6282
@thedeuce6282 6 жыл бұрын
Daemiex what's wrong with bolts? Bolts are rated, the loading is calculable... Enough bolts at the correct intervals and its strong enough. If you're confident in your calcs you don't need to resort to steel 'just to be safe'. Good engineering is about adaquate strength in the most efficient method.

Hi the chimney was brick just like the walls of the house so I fastened then straight to the chimney brest, obviously they were a tad shorter than the others. The timber for the floor was 3inch x 7inch c24 timbers and we pulled each joist through the bathroom window 1 at a time then carried them through the staircase opening, hope this helps

Hi when i built this loft conversion I was advised by my architect that C24 timbers at a thickness of 4x7 inch would be sufficient to span the 3.8m across from wall to wall. This is what I installed and it was all done to regs at the time. I could have put steels in and if I did it again I would just because it's easier. Each loft is different and would require different materials also building regs change so much over time so please look into all options before attempting a loft conversion on your own. Hi Great video, very informative. Doing a similar project myself. Just wondering how you got away with 50mm insulation between rafters and 50 mm below as my building control are asking for 100mm between and 40mm under rafters? What council area are you in? And when was the project done? Thanks

Lucidchronicles Building regs are still 125mm of insulation. Been that for at least 8 years now. 140mm was wrong information. 75mm between and 50mm underneath is ok for 100mm rafters with breathable felt

Hi Dan, great video, just wondered what happened to the uprights that were supporting the roof? Were these removed prior to your converting the loft?

Not all houses have them. None of mine do. Just the purlins spanning the two end walls

Great video. How did you get the floor joists into the attic?!

If you are using joist hangers on wood rather than brick. No need to screw them just use quick grip or bluetac. Our building inspectors are mad fekkas. I love to work in your area.

Hi Dan, great video so well done! I've been referring to the video a lot over the last year or two and have finally started on my conversion. It looks like my house is exactly the same as yours in this video so i was just wondering how you managed to not need a fire door to the loft room? It's sounding like i might need one which will drastically reduce the usability if the room. Thanks. Kev

I did need firedoors 2 on the ground floor and 1 on the entrance to the loft,

Ah ok, at the base of the stairs. That makes much more sense than putting a door in the actual loft!😅 Cheers!
