We buy metal 6 gallon cans from Tractor Supply to store our food. We live in hay country, so when the fields are mown, the mice start looking for a new home. We learned long ago that mice can chew through plastic buckets!

Diotomecious earth is a very effective insect control substance, farmers have used it for years dusting poultry and poultry sheds to eliminate bugs, it even works on ants, best thing is it's not toxic if swallowed in food *the dust however is hazardous to lungs so be careful with it and wear a spray painters mask at least*

Good to know that your food is still good after 5 years. I have put rice in food grade buckets before without Mylar bags, but I did use oxygen absorbers. The lid sucked down very tightly, so I know that it took a good seal. I do prefer to use both mylars and O2's most of the time though.

The worst thing about accidentally using an oxygen absorber in a pouch/bag of sugar isn't the fact you get a brick of sugar (easy enough to break down again) it's that the sugar absorbs a metallic flavor that not even burnt coffee can hide, I've successfully vacuum packed sugar in brick shape molds to make stacking it easier on the shelving units I use.

@@siboneypeltier2307 it's the granular sugar and salt that absorb the "rusty" taste, I've never had jerky or even sesame snaps stored with oxygen absorbers taste funny, I asked a food science lecturer about it years ago and he said something like "it is the porosity of the granules and the lack of oxygen available to start with in tightly packed sugar or salt, we've done lots of research into storing food long term, some things just need to be kept dry"

I never would have had that in the house before! When we had a graduation party I was able to grab extra plates and napkins, same with ketchup with those bins down in the cellar, that my husband had complained about getting shelves for. Always nice not to need a hammer/chisel for food prep lol. Hard sugar sugar sucks I think I'll stick with small amounts packaged. I realize that there are air pockets but as a single person, I don't want, or have the ability to use, 25lbs of anything at one time. I always package foods for long-term the same way I set up my freezer. Enough for me for a couple different meals, because I can open more than one if needed but once they are opened, they need used.

Has anyone looked in to buying mylar in rolls? Being so easy to seal (just taking people's word for it since I haven't actually used them before), seems like it would be easy enough to make bags from a roll, and "maybe" cheaper??? A little bit of nickel wire and a pretty simple circuit would be easy to build a temperature controlled press to seal them and s good paper cutter and these things could be rolled out to whatever sizes we need with very little waste.

o.k. the price hike is really happening in our area El Paso Texas and New Mexico I went shopping and my jaw dropped. EVERYTHING we bought like creamer was 36 cents higher milk is $3.00 a half gallon. We did get hamburger for $1.81 a lb. but everything else is 36 cents higher I was prepared, but a week ago we went into the city and it was regular price. Go to BIG LOTS they have a end cap on one of their isles and the clearance is there. I go Kashi honey toasted oat cereal for 35 cents a box. it expires next month so I prepared it for long term. I pray for all of us who are on a short budget. I just retired and get 1/3 of my paycheck as a pension, so if I can do it you can too and Dumpster shop where you can. Dollar General is really big on throwing away kids clothing and under wear if someone pokes a hole in the package.

don't need ox absorbers in salt or sugar. Salt should get a plastic lid when storing in jars. I vacuum seal pasta, rice, beans and anything else I get get away with in Jars without ox absorbers. You can add them if you want but you don't have to. I mainly use them when I store foods in the glass jars with clam shell lids because you can't vacuum seal those. Don't let it overwhelm you. Just buy a few food items at a time and package those and store then start over with the next few. I do agree it is a lot of work and people who don't do this don't realize what a job it is.

I wash it off the beans and rice before preparing to cook...You don't have too because food grade diatomaceous earth is good for you... That's neat how you seal those mylar bags...thanks on the tip on how to remove the markers with rubbing alcohol 😊 The screw on lids do seal really well compared to clamp on lids... I know what you are going through. My last 3 orders of oxygen absorbers from Amazon were useless. Out of 200 plus absorbers 4 did their job. Not a very good return on my investment. I had to repackage everything that contained the absorbers. I ended up investing in mason jars and food saver bags, vaccum sealing those instead of ordering more worthless absorbers and then storing the items in buckets and storage containers..

Thank you for sharing these ideas with us out here! I am not savy as too the mylar bags but will look them up to see who sells them! I am wondering if it is easier, (Since it appears you had a few inches left to the top of the bucket) if putting in a plastic measuring cup or wooden spoons - spices in glad bags would also be helpful should you not have adequate utensils?? cups to help with mixing portions - zip lock bag with several packets of gravy mix -even paper items needed for cooking as well as making good use of that extra room??

There is a natural way to keep crawlers out of your buckets when you can't use bags/absorbers. I found out from a depression era grandmother, that bay leaves work wonders. I had a huge accident order bag of them to test at the time. So I figured why not, I use it for Sugar/Flour/Rice, I layer a few leaves every few inches and it's worked. Even keep a few leaves in my kitchen cabinets, and they smell so good now.

You can for peace of mind, but not needed. Once you put the oxygen absorbers in the buckets it'll kill any eggs/critters when the oxygen goes away.

Mylar bags are 1 time use items. You seal them for storage. But once you cut them open, you need to use everything inside, or else have another mylar bag to reseal. I feel it's a pain in the rump.

Curious if you have any knowledge on temperature changes. The only place I can store food is in my shed, which probably gets over 100 degrees in summer and below freezing in winter. I am storing dried goods and various store bought canned goods.
@HomesteadCorner
@HomesteadCorner 2 жыл бұрын
Extremely temps either way can damage your food, the dry goods will probably fair better than the can goods, but I would definitely try to get them in a more controlled area, 40-65 degrees is ideal.

Heck ya !! Good stuff. Date, item, weight in sharpie on the bucket. The cooking and nutrition labels get cut off the original packaging and go on top between the Mylar and bucket. It might be one of my kids or grandkids that use it should I not make it and I want to leave them the info. As you stated NO O2 absorbers in salt n sugar or spices or koolaid/tang cause it can make it hard.

With all the extra space at the top of your Mylar bags why don't you do smaller bags on top that you could use for bartering or if someone needed help? I just think it is wasted storage space.

Is it ok to not use those fancy milar bags if you're rotating through your buckets within 2 years? I can fit quite a bit more food in the buckets this way, saving bucket space and money (35-40lb). Oh I think you just answered my question (still watching the video). I use air tight gasket lids, so I dump the food straight into the bucket. And food grade.

For a person that cannot afford that much that is a lot of items that you need which costs a lot of money to store food in a 5-gallon bucket. Why not dump 5 gallons of rice into a 5 gal bucket and hot glue the lid to stop are and bugs from entering was that not work too. Most dry food and food in general have some type of insect or bug living within it. Add only need the right temperature and the right time to to hatch. It has happened to me many times. It is of course best if you freeze your rice and many of your dry goods before placing it into a 5-gallon bucket and truly sealing it. But sometimes that does not work out well since many bugs can squirm their way into the lid and affect your food. I think that everyone should do what works for them and what they can actually afford. I absolutely think your way works better than mine. God bless America and every single person in this world and these innocent animals around the world as well.
