Great idea steve and very robust. I am going to modify it slightly. I am going to cut a hole in the bottom of a round hanging basket. Turn it upside down and slide it over the pipe onto the tray. The smaller birs will be able to get at the seed but it will keep the large birds, crows and birds of prey from picking them off lol

I tell you what I think my friend! Great Idea! Thanks for sharing it! I just started feeding the birds around my backyard early this summer and I have been amazed at what I didn't know was here! It all began, when two little birds fell out of a nest that we couldn't reach to put them back into! I was able to raise them both and return them to the "wilds" of the back yard and from there, it bloomed into a "Hobby"! :)

Really cool bird feeder. Your wife was right the squirrels would figure out that that rod comes out and down goes your bird feeder. I don't know about the squirrels in Canada maybe they're too polite to break into a bird feeder. In Florida my experience is when I got a squirrel proof bird feeder they figured out if they chew hole below the seed port they could and did empty my bird feeder within an hour. I'm looking at it through my back window thinking it's just fine the seeds are just disappearing at a rapid rate. when I found the hole. I threw the feeder away and squirrels started throwing pinecone cores down on me when I walked out of my house.

Squirrels. There is no such thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder. Some folks may want to try adding an inside down plastic garbage can lid to the top. Place a plastic Wiffle ball underneath it so the lid will easily tip and the squirrel will fall off. Then add an upside down plastic bowl about 4" above the feeding tray so the squirrel will have a hard time grabbing the feeding tray as he falls off the garbage can lid. this modification is not much for the asthetics of the feeder, but it has enabled me to hang it from a tree with better results in the never ending battle with the squirrels!

Cheap and easy, that's how I like a lot of things! The birds here go through a ton of black sunflower seeds in our bird feeder. Gromit gets pretty agitated when he watches them out the window. He's a vicious bird killing machine if he gets the chance. I was walking out of the garage a couple summers ago and came out just in time to watch him come tearing out of the bush he hides in, run half way across the yard, leap about five feet into the air and snag a bird that dared to do a low altitude fly by of my yard. I managed to grab him before he finished the bird off. I put the bird in a box in the dark with some water for about an hour, then released him out front. He was totally unresponsive when I got him away from Gromit. Like he was playing dead or something.

Awesome build ! I love my large backyard with its myriads of birds from a pair of nesting balds that seem to both float and command the air as well as the hooters conversation between themselves the cardinals blue jays robins wood peckers golden finches sea gulls migrating honkers and quite a dazzling array of hummers How much would you charge to build one of these pvc feeders for me?

Pamm I don't make any for money . I think most can build one themselves easily. Once you build one you will soon have many in no time and start giving them away to your friends 😅👍

Great job Steve the finished version (painted) is better looking than store bought. I want to add couple more holes higher up with some kind of baffle inside and perch, what do you think Mr Steve?

Greg I thought of that too but decided not too because the tray is just full of birds as it is :). I fill this once a week and sometimes when its real cold I only get 4 - 5 days on seed.

Good design The top metal rod could be a metal tent peg and a clothes peg to hold the other end.

The only weak link seems like it could be the 1/4 -20 thread in the bottom. Has that ever stripped out while tightening the Betty Crocker plate on the bottom or just turns preventing you from tightening the Betty Crocker plate? Just curious. Nice design and great video!

AR it's not holding a lot of weight so it's not a problem at all.
