Crayfish soft plastic lures are as cheap as chips these days so why make your own? Don’t ask stupid questions, because it’s fun and I wanted to see if I could. I used some basic craft store materials like Sculpey, an inexpensive oven bake modelling clay and some sculpting tools I borrowed from my son. It was not as easy as I thought, but luckily editing a couple of hours down to a few seconds makes me far more competent. I wanted some basics from the bait like sticky up claws, something crayfish do when looking for fight and tail that would bend on a jerky retrieve and also get the stance right, For the claws I embedded craft foam to give them buoyancy in the hot soft plastic liquid and the sections of the tail had some flexibility to curl up, this could of been a bit more flexible as i not sure it curled enough for my liking, To get the stance right, having the body titling up towards the head I used a penny jig head something i have used before with store bought crayfish, The jig head was home made out of penny and there is video on making it
Tools and materials
Sculpey oven bake modelling clay, amazon link amzn.to/42b7JiN
Rtv mould making silicone, i bought this cheap from amazon it has a shore rating a30 Amazon link amzn.to/3nznpNH
Lure making Plastisol(soft plastic), this can be bought from some larger tackle shops or online, i chose to remelt some shop bought lure i was no using in a microwave oven
2mm craft foam and pins for some buoyancy in the claws Amazon link amzn.to/3M2g3eZ

Megabass just released a craw bait with hollow pinchers like this. The hollow claws are the key. Keeps them raised up like it is being defensive to predators. Great job man, you’re really good at your craft.

What’s the benefits of doing this over injection molds. Or are injection just better. If I had to guess this is easier to get in to or cheaper.
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman Жыл бұрын
aluminium molds, are the industry standard and if well designed and made, produce reliable, lures time after time but they are expensive and not the easiest thing to mess around prototyping lures with. I made this lure as basic test to quickly if i could get a more natural kind of tail action, before actually modeling it in cad and then making a 3d printed mold and then having machined Aluminium mold made. Clay and silicone is quick, the molds easily deal with temperature and are relatively inexpensive, the downside you really have to polish the master to transfer a good finish to the mold, something i didn't really do, and all silicones are not the same, some produce cloudy and dull finished baits because they off gas.

i used standard rtv silicone, i have 3d printed moulds at 205c for soft plastic lures and used them with no problems i pour soft plastics at about 170-180c, i have also made molds from polyurethane resin filled with aluminium powder and also made them with epoxy resin
