I know it's a late response, but yes. It should be possible to use something like opencv to grab frames from the game and detect the player and obstacles and to be able to navigate the game. It's something I want to do, but I don't know if I'm ready yet. I might start by seeing if I can get RAM values out of an emulator first and use Mario's x- and y-values to start. I'm still learning though.
