• MACRAME SHAPES SERIES ...
Hey guys! Happy Wednesday! I’ve got a macrame spiral tutorial for you today - a great pattern to use for macrame coasters, for the middle of a juju hat (I’ll show you an example of this), or it could also be incorporated into a wall hanging! Let’s get started.
Materials:
- 2mm twisted cotton string (available in my Etsy Shop)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
This tutorial creates a finished spiral that is 5cm in diameter (not including the strands of rope that hang off of the spiral). If you are looking to create a spiral that is bigger than this, you can either continue the pattern or use rope that is bigger than 2mm. I’ll give you tips on how to do this as we go along.
Cut one piece of rope that is 40 inches (102cm) long. This rope will be used as the filler cord.
Cut 12 pieces of rope that are 30 inches (76cm) long. These pieces will be used as our working cords.
Using a cow hitch knot, attach 4 pieces of rope to your filler cord. If you are using thicker rope I would only attach 3 pieces of rope to your filler cord.
There are sections of this video where I repeat a process several times and I speed up to 2x the speed. If you would like to view these sections in real time please click settings at the bottom right of the screen, click speed, 0.5.
Create a circle with your filler cord. Tie a double half hitch knot around your filler cord.
Continue tying double half hitch knots until you’ve completed one round of knots. I would recommend using something heavy (as I’ve done here) to hold your rope down so that you can tie your knots.
We have now completed one round. For the second round, we are going to add the rest of the working cords. Attach your new working cords in between each old working cord the using cow hitch knots.
You will use a cow hitch knot to attach a new cord, then tie a double half hitch knot with an old working cord, then a cow hitch knot, and another double half hitch knot, and so on.
We have completed the second round. We will now tie 3 more rounds of double half hitch knots (to create 5 rounds total).
Here’s the finished product. If you are interested in creating a bigger spiral you will need to add in a few extra pieces of rope (as we did for round 2). I would recommend adding the rope in evenly but less frequently - not even other strand but every 3-4 strands.
If you are satisfied with this size, all we have left to do is tuck in the ends.
Flip your work over and tuck the filler cord into a couple of double half hitch knots in the back.
Cut off the extra rope.
Flip your work back over and tuck in the other end of the filler cord. Tuck it in to one double half hitch knot (two loops) on the side and then a couple more loops in the back and cut the extra rope.
You can keep the working cords as is or you can cut them. I cut mine to be 6cm long and then attached the spiral to the centre of my juju hat. If you are creating a macrame coaster I would cut the ends even shorter and then brush them out to create a bit of fringe.
Thanks so much for watching! If you like this video please hit the thumbs up below and if you have any feedback please feel free to leave a comment. Don’t forget to subscribe for weekly video tutorials!

Your verbal instructions are presented very well. You actually explain why you’re doing something instead of just telling “to do it like this”.

Hi again! When I want to learn something, I usually view couple of videos from different macrame artists; there are slightly different ways to do things ;-) One curious thing "cow knot" = larks head knot = alondra knot (Spanish) Thanks one more time 🐝🌼🤓👋✌

Hi there! Thanks for the message. The cow hitch knot is a lark's head knot if you were to look at the knot from the back of your work. (not sure what it is called in Spanish - sorry about that!) I have a tutorial for this knot if you need more clarification: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYrEealtZdaWgbs Hope this helps! :)

I have a macrame bowl I desperately want to make but have no clue what to do... can you help me if I show you a finished design? It’s like this spiral design but made into a small wall bowl decor. Can I add a photo of this for you to see or somehow message for possible instruction?

Your knots are likely too tight! Make sure you add cords where there are gaps as opposed to making the cord 'reach over'

I want to make this big enough for a rug. I need to know how long to cut the ropes
@lindaraykowski3967
@lindaraykowski3967 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe don’t cut them at all ? Like keep the rope rolled up as it is and then loop them trough like that ? Or you do the math and calculate, she used 30 inches for I think 5 inches diameter, so just double that oder how many times bigger you want your rug to be :)

@@pb4897 I created a coaster with 3mm twisted cotton string. Filler cord (55 inches), working cords (40 inches). Round 1 - attach 3 strands to your filler cord Round 2 - attach a new working cord, then tie a double half hitch knot with an old working cord (alt. until you finish the round) Rounds 3-5 - tie double half hitch knots Round 6 - same as Round 2 Creates a coaster that is just bigger than 3 1/2 inches (not including the fringe). Hope this helps! Thank you!

How can we incorporate it in any work say for example a wall hanging?
@LotsofKnotsCanada
@LotsofKnotsCanada 5 жыл бұрын
I would recommend making the spiral first and then before tucking in the filler cord on the side, attach your spiral to your wall hanging. Attach by tying a few double half hitch knots to the filler cord (use cords from your wall hanging as working cords). I have yet to try this but I think it would look really neat! Especially with a few spirals!
