Not so expensive and complicated. I built my own still from plumbing pipes and fittings.

You've got to upgrade to electric my friend. So much cheaper, and efficient. I started on propane too, but kick myself everytime I start my keg up and think back on how much heat loss there was with propane.

I would like to but here in South Africa we have alot of loadshedding so power can be cut off anytime. And LP gas is much cheaper here.

What should yield be per litre of wash? If I have 20 litres of 15% alcohol rum wash shouldn’t I yield 5 litres of 60% alcohol rum? How much alcohol is lost?

How do you make caramelized sugar ?? Also, how do you CONTROLL the temperature of gas flame to get good vapour ??

Here I made the caramelized sugar kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGWYhniuoqenhcU&t I only distill indoors and the gas is on one setting, I regulate the temp with the reflux valves

about 2 to 4 bottles of 750ml, all depends on the amount of ABV after fermentation

The marbles helps to prevent scorching on the bottom of your boiler.

best is to test the starting gravity and then ferment until the gravity is on 1 or below, and yes 25 C should be fine

If the container is kept open maybe but not so that it would affect the taste. If the container is kept closed. It won't drop at all

As its distilled... what is the point in adding the spices etc early on? (Video 1) as surely any flavour imparted there is removed when evaporating the alcohol off? Wouldnt you be better steeping the distilled alcohol with chosen spices?

While not traditional, adding spices during distillation can add a unique twist to your rum. The flavor infusion can vary depending on several factors, but it's definitely worth trying.

Carbon filtering after oak ageing will remove a lot, if not all, the flavour. Why did you filter?

I have done some testing of my own, and I prefer the taste of the filtered product. you don't have to filter if you don't want to.

What are the total costs per liter in dollars or euro's for the ingredients? It looks rather expensive

1.5 liter molasses = $10 Mix spice (whole bottle 80g)= $2 (only use 2 tsp) Epsom salt (whole bag 150g)= $1 (only use 1 tsp) Yeast (bag of 500g) = $8 (only use around 20g) Sugar 3kg = $2.50 so per liter not sure,

What temperature did u ferment at? Is it temperature fussy like beers etc?

I tried to keep it at 24 degrees Celsius with a fishtank heater. No its not as fussy as beer. The colder the fermentation the longer it will take to ferment out.

Very well produced video with a clear recipe and process. Why the epsom salt? I would think that it might retard fermentation ?maybe? I noticed that you didn’t use any yeast nutrient which a lot of recipes call for. You’ve got a beautiful still.

Not that much but loose more of that harshness. I have done tests and for me is it better with the carbon.

Not everything I do is on the video, in South Africa it is normal to drink it with coke, but this one is too sweet with coke so we drink it as a a liqueur (neat).

When I first drunk rum (actually the first time I ever drunk alcohol) I mixed it with Sprite. Clear rum with clear soda. Now I prefer anejo straight.
