TDR plugins work absolutely reliably on a PC, no crashes at any time, so that PC users who use Windows [XP x86 and 7 x64 here] don't get scared of using them. I really love SlickEQ and Feedback Comp II. Great mastering grade plugins. Luftikus EQ is also great. However, for limiting I would advise those who don't want their tracks squashed to oblivion to consider using LoudMax plugin for light limiting tasks as it's better quality. It can give you absolutely transparent up to 3dB of gain. For what I do it is absolutely perfect as I only want to sort of address the highest peaks and leave most of the dynamics intact. If you like the "pancaked" sound, use VladG's Limiter then, because it works better for making "pancakes". I won't go into details of what you should put on your pancakes, but I really like mashed bananas with a bit of cocoa powder in it. It's really delicious! ;) Btw. No offence, but how can you hear anything on KRK Rokit's 5? Even VXT-6 are much better, and you can do wonders with these, especially if you have some other reference lo-fi speakers like Yamaha HS50 or 80. Gosh... they can barely work as mixing speakers, let alone for mastering. Just a little bit of critics and putting things into the perspective, I hope you can handle it. It's not ill mannered and based upon loads of experience. :) I'm not going to brag about what I use for mastering, but KRK Rokits are really the lowest of the lowest ends there is. Otherwise, it is a really great mastering tutorial for newbies! You just have to be aware of some facts that I pointed out. [now shut the fuck up, Dave, you've already said too much :)] Big up, guys! Great tutorial! d= :) =b Just a little P.S. Your tracks will sound better if you don't squash them too much either on Soundcoud, or radio or whatever. Be reasonable with a limiter and LISTEN CAREFULLY and A/B often! I would also use L2 just to master a track for people I really don't like.

+Osito De Peluche Have you tried using a dynamic mic instead? Condensers are overrated mate... ;) They are too sensitive IMO, but of course it depends on the track you're recording. However, in most cases a dynamic mic sounds better to my ears, and it's easier to mix with.

Waves L2 is a really bad limiter, man. It may be simple but it sounds like crap. It's been overcome by so many freeware and paid for plugins I've lost count. Who uses L2 any more?? I'd use LoudMax every time instead of it. I wish the myths of Waves plugins being the holy grail get dispersed as soon as possible. Waves plugins have been good in the 90s and early 00s when there wasn't much competition, but nowadays they just sound like your average plugins. Keep it real. d= ;) =b

HI, Just a comment on why mastering mode is indented ... its because to get the best signal in the mastering version they actually used a series of switches instead of a continuous pot under the knob. The continuous pot would give you signal noise but the indented knob is actually switching between a series of different circuits. That would also explain why it was more expensive because each switch/indent required its own resistors and components etc. More assembly, etc.

I noticed the eq that can go up to 40Khz, nice thing, it surely add something in the top end, but with the limitation due to the aliasing of the numeric format, if the samplerate of the soundcard or the soundfile is set to 44100Hz, the top frequency is 44100/2 = 22050Hz, barely 20Khz because the system had to cut the highs a lot to avoid spectral issues. The best way to use it, can be using a 96Khz sample rate, with an harm exciter before if it's used directly on a 44.1Khz sample.
@pointblankmusicschool9 жыл бұрын
+Greg au Riz It's a 40kHz frequency, but the slope is what gives it the air and brings the boost into audible range more gradually and subtly than boosting directly at 18-20Khz
@egoadsr9 жыл бұрын
Okay, it'as a sort of parametric bell eq applyed to 40Khz, so the slope affect the high end frequencies, but in the case of a less than 88.1Khz, it's approximatly the same effect than apllying a high shelf at 20Khz...
@jorgepeterbarton8 жыл бұрын
+Point Blank Music School I noticed when an EQ goes up to 20khz, there is often a bit of compromise on the shape as it get to the edge, especially with peaks and things. Is this the main advantage? I read something about EQ being able to affect transients somehow as well, like in 44.1k you can have a really short bit of data, so that was some argument for going up to the whole range of whatever sample rate you set..

I guess I'm just trying to figure why at about 6:48 he coins the -6dB/-3dB theory to be rubbish, but a few years back in the "Mastering w/ Waves Plugins" video, he was pretty solid on giving those exact numbers. As far as dynamic range is considered, I'm a bit confused as to how to note/monitor the difference between that and peak volume.

how does a boost at 40k help is your sample rate 88.1 or more?
@pointblankmusicschool9 жыл бұрын
+Elijah Lucian A boost at 40kHz isn't just a boost at that frequency. If the EQ band has has a slope of 12dB/Oct, for example, a boost of 15dB at 40kHz would still boost 3dB at 20Khz, within in the audible range. Maag's EQ, and the Luftikus used here, are designed very specifically to add 'air' without harshness.
@elijahlucian9 жыл бұрын
Oooooooo I did you think about that so just a slight boost at the top. Makes sense. However in three world of lossy compression , would this have an actual effect or is it just for high fidelity listeners? Thanks for the reply
@sirshinra8 жыл бұрын
+Elijah Lucian I feel it wouldn't add as much to radio plays (because of their extra compression) and other scenarios such as clubs. However, for personal listening (headphones, sound system) it would add an element of ambience, and really a drop of 'life' to the mix. So subtle, but the air just pens everything up so slightly. I think high fidelity listeners will appreciate this a lot, but non-high fidelity casual listeners will feel something from it without really noticing.

Do these guys have a rack of outboard gear anywhere. Is everything really with just plugins in that studio software? The reason I ask is because of other recording You Tube videos that make it like mastering with just studio software plugins isn't really any good, when right now I can't afford all the actual physical pieces of equipment they have.
@pointblankmusicschool10 жыл бұрын
hewrecbizman We have a few studios here at PB but we feel that using free plugins makes it more accessible to everyone. It's up to you whether you consider software 'good' for mastering, but the techniques explained here can be transferred to hardware if you don't.
@dddux10 жыл бұрын
Yes it is good enough, don't worry. Especially when you know the tools you use and what you want/need to do to make it sound better. Of course, you do need great pair of speakers and a treated room to accomplish that. The latter are the most important things to master a track properly, actually. Tools don't matter that much.
