We're renovating a 120 year old house in Spain. From tired and drab, to new and modern with a nod back to it's old world beauty. All on a small budget.
This week we show you how to renovate a bathroom using microcement. We continue with our DIY renovation project and cover bathroom tiles with microcement to give a fresh new look to an old dingy space.
We also add the irrigation to our first straw bale vegetable garden on our off grid homestead. This no dig veg garden will be low maintenance, but hopefully help us combat our dry climate and get a good harvest.
Thank you for following our journey.
¡Un gran abrazo desde Smithsdale Farm!

We're Danny and Kate. In 2015 we moved from the UK to Barcelona, and after 8 years enjoying the busy city and sunny beaches we moved to the mountains to start a new adventure. We'll be renovating a town house, building an off grid cabin, restoring an old stone house and farming 12.5 acres of land with regenerative agriculture and permaculture practices in Catalunya, Spain.

Another inspiring video! Congrats on all the accomplished work! Bathroom is already stunning and the straw raised beds look very promising! A lil' tip I received from a neighbour-farmer, for when you're connecting the black tubes to the junctions/T-pieces: (carefully) warm up the ending of the black tube with a lighter, the warmth makes it softer and it's much easier to fit the junctions in, it then cools down and stays in place. You can also add "abrazaderas" to avoid leaking at each connecting spot of your system. Take good care, can't wait for the next one! All the best! xxx

Thank you! We like how the bathroom is turning out, too. And thanks for the tips about the irrigation tubing. We should try heating it next time!

Hi, figs don’t like wind. When they are in a windy place, they loose leaves quicker than grow new ones
@SmithsdaleFarm

Oh really. We’ll need to keep an eye on this one then, and maybe move it in the autumn/winter if it’s not doing so well 🤔

It seems we have made the same mistake, our fig tree is very unprotected from the wind and is not looking very good.
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 4 ай бұрын
@nasu78 Oh no! Sorry to hear it 😔 We’re thinking of either adding some other plants/bushes to try and shield the wind a bit, or making a little wind break fence with cañas or olive cuttings. Maybe there’s something similar you could do too to protect it a bit? Once its roots are established it should be fine… we have an old one right in the same fast wind path and it’s totally fine.

It's very interesting to see how you set up the drip system! If there is a way to set up a timer for the watering I would probably do that to save some effort there. On our land we are not really collecting rain water yet, our old cistern needs to be fixed as it's not really holding water, and we basically have to bring all the water we are going to use each time we visit and make trips to a nearby pond and feel bad for the little tadpoles living in it for making their living space smaller! With the high winds in this area, are you worried about the straw flying off?

Ooof that sounds like a lot of work! We’re thinking of cleaning out our cisterna this summer. Does yours have too many trees close by or is it just age? I think it was John Kaisner (natural farmer) we saw with the capillary irritation. Though I think it still needs some extra stop taps in, we arnt getting water on the top line. For the straw, we have seen other ppl have success with it here, though in a less windy site than ours. So far it’s held very well, I think once it’s a bit damp it’s less likely to fly off

It's just old, the surface is very cracked, and I've already started chipping off the loose bits in preparation for when we can dedicate some time and love to it. We still have a lot to do around the cistern too to keep the water that will enter as clean of sticks and debris as possible. We've seen cisterns in the area that are really beatiful, ours looks like it's been put together by a toddler, so we're also thinking about how to make it look a little better without taking it apart completely (not sure we would know how to put it together again!). 😅

Really nice video! We have some figs here between 15-20 years old in a windy spot and working on them for last 5-6 months! They are really strong trees and usually they recover quickly. They were planted and pruned low from the main trunk, approximately 25-30 cm and separated 3-4 main branches from the main like canopy shape. It makes them strong against the wind. To keep them short might help against the wind in your case too! 😊

Oh great to know. Thanks for sharing! We have an old one in the same path of wind which is doing fine, so hopefully we can get this one established and healthy too 🤞🏻

What are the products you used to cover the tiles in your bathroom? And where did you buy them,
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 2 ай бұрын
It was a product from Leroy Merlín for covering bathroom and kitchen tiles. Not sure it was made to be used to the extent we have but it’s holding up well. Here’s the name: Masilla cubre azulejos en pasta TOUPRET 7KG

Your husband is the fastest worker I have ever seen.... it is like you speeded up the movie. Just lke Benny Hill. It is okay for you teenagers but us over 50s cannot move to Spain and do what you clever people do as arthritis is taking effect.

The pressure is always better when you first set it up but will only get worse. Put them in now but you will probably have to adapt as you go along.

Oh that’s interesting. Why does it decrease? We know it’ll depend on how much is in the IBC, and it’ll be best if we try to keep it as full as possible.. but are there any other reasons the pressure would get worse over time?

@@SmithsdaleFarm bits or dirt and grit will get in the system and algae will grow around the outlets over time. All manageable though.
