There difference is Claugh42 is a goofball hack that has no idea what he's talking about. That tool box was rated for 1200lb. The original wheels are probably more than that... Then he replaced them with 1000lb casters.... So almost 20% worse. To hold up a 200lb surface plate. 🤡🤡🤡

@@RotarySMP Only trouble I can see with this casters is, smal wheels and rough floor. 6:56 As you pushed your welding cart in to the room, its obviously stoped at the point where small front wheels reached the edge of tiled the floor. Of course.. in this case, you will probably very rarely move that cabinet . But with something like welding cart, which is frequently moved around.. you need bigger wheels
@aaro_n4 ай бұрын
My history with those types of cabinets is if they get slammed hard enough they can lock themselves. I'd recommend taking apart the lock and leaving just one pin in so if it ever does lock it just takes a screwdriver or similar to reopen.

Small button cells will show 3V even when dead, to gauge the charge you need to test them under load. For this purpose I keep a single blue or white LED (both have the blue junction that has around 3V forward voltage drop) in my tool bag. Just touch the terminals to the LED and if it's fresh it should shine bright, it will shine dull or not at all when the charge is low. The internal resistance of the cell is enough to protect the LED against the overcurrent, at least for the usual 3V CR2032 cells.

The side bars on your top cabinet aren't stiffeners, they're slotted for drawer dividers! Get some strips of aluminium sheet and notch them so they interlock and you can get rid of all those ice cream containers. At my last job we had divided up several drawers for endmills, taps, drills and inserts but we made up a press tool to notch the ally strips. Fun welding helmet story, if i'm wearing my speedglas and someone uses the forklift with it's amber warning light flashing even if it's not in view, my helmet dims with every flash and makes the auto darkening less reliable despite it not being visible. I thought the helmet was broken, perhaps there are certain wavelengths that mess with the auto darkening.
@RotarySMP4 ай бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out about the dividers. Makes sense. I'll look into getting some dividers laser cut. In my other room, I found a helmet setting which then worked fine, although the lighting is very similar, if darker.

Hi mate The delay switch isn't how quickly the lens reacts, but rather how long the screen stays dimmed after welding. When TIG welding it's best to have the delay up a bit, for the exact reason you were experiencing. When the helmet fails to pick up the light instead of getting flashed the screen will remain dimmed hopefully long enough for the sensors to begin working again. So in that regard you actually end up getting flashed or less when you up the delay.

I've only got two welding helmets, my original Huntsman that I have used almost daily for 25 years and a Yeswelder auto dark that I only use for out of position Tig. The auto dark eats batteries and usually it flickers like yours to let me know it's hungry again. I pull the batteries out when I'm not using it which seems to make them last longer. I suspect the electronics inside may have a parasitic drain going on like many of the Asian digital calipers. Nice cabinet, that would be $1200 at current prices for a Vidmar. I do basically the same thing keeping the tooling for a given machine, by the machine whenever possible, it's much easier for setups and working, but really pays off during cleanup.

I just try whatever random blue with white and black (which was blackboard paint, and not even from the same paint system) I had on the shelf, mix a bit, compare, add a bit more, compare etc. I was not patient enough on the grinding wheel cover, and didn't get the color to match well. I clean the gun after each use: - First pour out the remaining paint. - Then use a rag (sometimes clean, often not :) to wipe out most of what paint remains in the cup - Pour in a small amout of thinners. Put the lid on the cup, shake the gun around to dissolve the remaining paint. - Spray that thinners into the rag with the paint on it. - Repeat, but spray cleaner thinners into a clean rag. - Repeat again, but this time us the nearly clean thinner spray to spray wash the cup lid. Rest gets sprayed into the clean rag. - Wipe down gun cup and lid with just sprayed rag. - Remove cup. Wipe out thread. - Pull cup filter. Pour thinners into gun where filter mounts, use gun to spray that thinners through the little filter to clean it. - Remove gun nozzle screw on air thingy at front. Pour little more thinners into gun, and spray that nozzle thingy. - Unscrew and remove needle valve. - Use air blast pistol to blow air backwards through paint gun from front. Maybe pour in a bit of thinners and repeat. - Wipe every thing down. I normally spray paint as it is very efficient. It uses way less paint than rolling. The paint I use is normally just the stuff at the hardware store. I know it is not as tough as 2 part paints, but they are seriously hazardous to the lungs without really good PPE. I use a charcoal filter mask for painting, but am not confident it is good enough for 2 part epoxy paints.

@RotarySMP Thanks for taking your time for that big of an answer 😃 Sorry for the confusion about mixing colors, even so your answer was great! I actually meant mixing with thinners. I guess the mixing ration is determined by the manufacturer? Will something like "Nitroverdünnung" do the job for cleaning, or is it some special thinner?

I was given those restrictions by the vendor. I expect it is based on where they have warehouses.

What’s the chance your helmet was reacting to interference from the new welder?

Hi Jim, there were some comments that the low initial arc current, and slow ramp could be the issue, and I could up them, so it triggers cleaner.

Re the welding helmet; looks like you had the sensitivity turned right up? If the room has bright LED lights and you turn the sens right up, it puts the room lighting brightness near the threshold and can confuse the autodarkening. You could try turning the sens down, even though it sounds counter. Also, the helmet circuitry responds better to a fast rise in UV light level, so if you have a low start amps and slow rise on your TIG settings that wont help... try set the TIG to higher start amps and a real fast current rise time so the arc "flashes" up to full brightness much quicker. Wont affect the weld quality much, but should help the helmet sense that an arc just started. By the way, it creeps me out everytime I see endmills etc stored on a shelf with their sharp bits upward! 😬 massive hand injuries are only a few mm away, everytime you reach for tools. I got complacent once with endmills, then a 6mm 4 flute HSS got me right between two knuckles, real deep. It was only pure luck that it missed the finger extensor tendon, a few mm difference and I would have lost the use of my right forefinger (unless getting microsurgery). PLEASE consider this! Those endmills are as sharp as razor blades and mounted so securely in the shelf that during hand contact, it's like a razor blade with a ton of force behind it...

Thanks for your tips on the helmet settings. I found settings which worked well in the darker garage, but didn't consider the arc rise. That is helpful. I put all those end mills into the tool cart drawer, in containers. I appreciate the safety tips. Working alone you dont think of them.

You need to get a good auto darkening helmet. The cheaper import ones are no good. An affordable Speedglas 100 or Esab A40 helmet will not make you fear getting flashed everytime you turn on your arc
@RotarySMP4 ай бұрын
It is weird, I found a setting which works really well in the garage where the Maho is, but it was hopeless in the machine shop which has brighter lighting.
@ultimatemonkey4 ай бұрын
With the issues of the auto darkening helmet - it's fairly common on the more budget friendly that for whatever reason they have issues with low amperage tig arcs .. I suspect you're probably under 50amp.on the machine .. unfortunately not much you can do to fix it
@RotarySMP4 ай бұрын
Good point, I was under 50. I will play around with the starting amps and the ramp up. In the darker room I found a reliable setting.
@ultimatemonkey4 ай бұрын
@RotarySMP it's not so much the ambient light that causes problems, it's the sensors in the helmet itself. It gets worse when you're welding lower amperage and you're in a small space with your hands and torch blocking much of the UV light to trigger the helmet. I have many welding helmets , even my miller elite does it under about 25amps. My esab sentinel is my only auto darkening helmet that I've never had do it. The rise in offshore manufacturing of tools is both great in that it allows many people to purchase tools they could otherwise no afford or justify but flip side is the flaws tend to show themselves sooner
