Morten Hygum there are a couple functions beat_and_blur, and blur_and_blink that were broken. Just figured out if I switch NUM_LEDS to NUM_LEDS-1 (or maybe N_PIXELS if I used that terminology in this code...on my mobile and not looking at actual code right now) it will fix these. They are really cool if you want to give them a shot....

it's me again and i think i have watched this and your other videos like 5 times in the last couple of days , one i love architecture and art - second i love watching the process, helps think and see new ideas - i love watching videos like this, there are so many of these diy videos, but their are only a few true artist and designers that can pull off a real grand and clean design and make people jump up and say thats just awesome or i want that in my house. I have to say is your designs remind me of the Sundance furniture and art or like a ralph lauren furniture piece. it's like old world charm brought back to like and upgraded to the 21 century, with memories of the past, but more upscale and unique, ok i have said enough just awesome

Routing into foam. Genius. Why didn't I think of that? Beautiful.
@modustrial7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I use pink foam under everything when I cut. It is soft and easy to cut through, cheap and reusable, dimensionally stable with reasonable weights on it, and self-leveling for heavy weights that are evenly distributed (I used to use it as a self-leveling base under large aquariums).
@FranzStrasse7 жыл бұрын
We use the pink foam a great deal in the theatre and now that you mention it, I not only use it for sculpture, trim and the like, but I use it underneath plywood when cutting. I have a several 1'x4' strips of white styrofoam left over for something that gets used here at home for cutting. But routing never occurred to me. So obvious...

(long pause between comment and reply...) Yep. We didn't make our usual trip to Cozumel this year so I have nothing new to post to my "channel". The problem being that it's easy to take loads of video and it takes time and concentration to edit it down to something worth watching. I'm sure you understand that...

Awesome build my friend, and like Jay anderson was saying, only if you could hide the electrical wire. The only way i see to do it is to sleeve the metal wire and put the electrical wire inside too. I know it's easier to say than to do it but it's my only suggestion because everything else is perfect. Keep up the good work, looking forward to see your 4th project! 😏
@modustrial7 жыл бұрын
I thought of that, but then you still have thick wire. I suppose at least it is straighter then. That is likely what I'll do when I do the permanent install, if I can't come up with something better (the backdrop in its permanent location doesn't look great in video, so this is a temporary install). If only I could send 12A wirelessly :)
@SEBTECHDIY7 жыл бұрын
Yeah i know it's not the perfect solution when the goal is to not see the wires so the lamp look like it's floating. 👍 Wireless 12A plug technology has not yet arrived, but maybe soon the lithium batteries will be so small and so powerful to power our lamps for 1 year long on single charge lol Im dreaming! 😆😆

Installing rechargeable battery packs directly on (or even in!) the rings would be interesting. If my ceilings were a bit lower (they are 13 ft) I would consider it, but as it is I would have to get the ladder out every time I wanted to recharge.

It really depends on the type of LED strips. I never actually went back to do the Arduino tutorial, but I did add the arduino code link in the description. Check out the Nerdforge channel and their LED music syncing tutorials for the time being, as they go into a ton of detail on the code and electronics, which are similar to mine.

Patrick Stepler not quite...I agree, the off the shelf music controllers tend to be very Blinky/flashy, and don't have smooth blended movements. The best I've seen is the one I used in my LED concrete countertop project. If you check that video description, it might be worth a look

Just came across your channel. Looks great. You asked if there would be any interest in the arduino end of this. I vote yes. There are countless arduino How to channels but with the unique projects you make I love the blending of all these different disciplines.
@modustrial7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yea, I definitely like experimenting with different disciplines and combinations of materials/techniques. For me, the electronics are a means to an end. I would rather be woodworking and casting concrete than programming and soldering. BUT, I love the end results when integrating programmable LEDs in projects, so I can't stay away :) I'm hoping that through a few iterations I can develop a simple way to integrate the LEDs, with minimal soldering and coding. The Github code in the description works for this project, but I think it could be more refined. For V2 of this light and another light, I'm going to try to migrate to WeMos esp8266 for simple wifi control. There will definitely be an electronics video for this light (and hopefully applicable to a number of lights), once I'm happy that I have an elegant and simple solution that is worth sharing.

Great video and great build! Tiny bit of criticism, or suggestion for improvement from my side is to use discreet electric wires to hang the rings and thus getting rid of the two thick black cables you used. I made something similar quite a few years ago with WS2812b leds and a custom ATMega microcontroller and I was able to almost hide the wires that way. There's very little amperage involved so you can use quite thin wires. I used white wires for all of it. Just a tip from my side, but yours is great as it is regardless!
@modustrial7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And yes, I'm planning to do a version 2.0 where I hide wires better and perhaps even run the power through the hanging wires.
@JensAndree7 жыл бұрын
I use the electrical wires as the hanging wires. If you have four wires you have anode, cathode and two wires for data (if needed). I use a strong, but thin, wire with white shielding and that works great for me. Bonus is people wondering how the WS2812b leds are controlled and powered ;)

You can still attach the LED wires to the support wires, they won't be seen if they are attached to the top.

Yes, planning to do that or run power through hanging wires for version 2.0 of this light.

sweet project: your wood work is stellar. can you hide the wiring for the LEDs by running the wires along the cable supports?

Thanks! Version 2.0 is in my pipeline, and will have less conspicuous wiring.

Great wood work. You should've gone with a three cable hanging system instead of 4, weigh dispersion and balance wise, 3 is enough, it also makes so all the cable have weigh on them and therefor are completely straight (here you clearly fucked up the length somewhere). Now about the electricity, run it through one of the cables, you could pre-dip the cable into a PVC compound so you don't get shocked if you touch it, and then spray paint the whole thing back to brushed steel for style. And probably do the same process for the three cables so it looks even. I would've also tried to find led strips with leds more close together, and probably find a thicker plastic to cover it so the light dissipates nicely.

Interesting thought on 3 vs 4 wires; it would be easy to change when I do the permanent install in my living room (this was a temporary install just for the video). The plan was originally to use 144 LEDs/m strips, but with the curvature, they kept breaking. I spent an entire day cutting out a bad LED, soldering the strip back together, only to find another one went out. After a whole day of frustration, I decided just to do 60 LED/m strips.
