Cool project. I just got one of those pull saws as well, but I got the Dozuki with the spine on the backside. Much more fluid and intuitive to control. Also, that 60 degree point on O1 drill rod is exactly what I do when I need a weird size drill. I'll profile the shank to size and then cut/hone the tip. It seems to work well on soft metals and even mild steel in a pinch if you just need a few holes.

Thank you, kind sir! I can see how this could work with other materials in a pinch. I will admit that I have some other O1 set aside for another project, and I wanted to experiment with heat treating on something smaller first. I'll have to light up the O/A torch for that one, I think... :D

I can't say the idea was original. I kind of stole it from Clickspring...haha. O1 is pretty forgiving for heat treating. I see a lot of non-forge knife makers using it. I keep a sampling of drill rod and blank HSS around always. You just never know what you're going to think of at midnight.....
