I do like the use of steel framing in the build. Your methods are good to I feel the conductive properties of steel in cold climates will be a nice addition to a how and why if possible.

Please do make a video down the road of the stained glass project! I'm thinking of building a tiny house in the summer and the thought of stained glass has crossed my mind too. Great job on this video by the way, i'm learning a lot just from watching your guys' videos.

Giving the window the Vanna White treatment. Nice!
@eyeswideshut28006 жыл бұрын
It's like doing the window upside down in my opinion, we seal corners and leave bottom open for possible water run off, we also reverse cut to utilize house wrap as flap at top for extra protection and also direct water. The flex corner also sticks and seals to flashing so also extra protection and cut inside wrap directly in middle of seal so not carrying water back into house...ijs

Making your own windows? What's next? Planting your own trees so you can use that wood? and then making nails, screws and hammers all from twigs and stones so then you can really say you made your tiny house from ultimate scratch. Haha. I'm impressed! The windows look great!!

Your videos are SO helpful! Did you go with tempered glass for your windows?
@ThisOldMan-ya4727 жыл бұрын
You got it mostly right. There should be no seam tape on the bottom of the window, as any accumulating condensation can not drain, the very reason why windows should be elevated above the frame sill. Your corner pieces should have been installed under the building wrap, as you did at the top of the window. NEVER depend on tape to be a waterproof product, it may stick well when new, but after ten years of hot weather, it will probably dry up and detach. (Same reason I do not believe in gluing the paper back drywall to studs, as the paper deteriorates with age, after all, it is just paper, so adhesion is lost after a number of years.

BUT if the building wrap is on top of the corner pieces will this create a bubble or buckles?

Nice window install! seems a lot easier when you build a new house vs installing new windows in an old house.. Have you guys used the spray foam before? if it's not too late make sure you're wearing clothes you don't mind wrecking. stuff can get messy FAST.
@rossmclean76236 жыл бұрын
My comment on spray foam is too late for Mic & Lindi to evaluate. However, low expansion polyurethane spray foam is ALWAYS recommended for the windows. The regular spray foam is the high expansion variety & will possibly cause the windows to crack. This also applies to housing construction. DAMHIKT! Cheers.

Right, installing windows in new construction is easy! Going to need more then a Black and Decker for old houses!

Hey guys, thanks for another great video! Will you please consider doing a video on designing your tiny house? I'd love to see what method you used to calculate wall strength and 3d image your home. I use an android app for 3d imaging but I hear sketchup is the best free option for pc... What did you do? I'd also love to hear about the floorplan you chose and why it works best for your lifestyle.

Hey Mic! Did you have much trouble sourcing parts and products not containing animal ingredients/ derivatives or did you just have to do your upmost in difficult circumstances?
@tiytinyityourself77337 жыл бұрын
Will Steele Building materials in terms of structural components don't tend to contain animal products. However for more interior products, sealants, stains, paints, etc u have to be careful. We already turned down a whey based outside stain. It's hard cuz I'm chemically sensitive and I want to use zero VoC and non toxic materials in our house but a lot of them are animal based. We plan on making a video about a lot of the products we use. -lyndi

Flashing windows is one of the great debates builders have. It seems like everyone has a slightly different method. One thing they all seem to have in common is that you DON'T seal the bottom of the window, so any moisture that gets behind the window has a place to get out. I don't know the correct answer.
@eyeswideshut28006 жыл бұрын
59seank that's correct
@scocassovegetus7 жыл бұрын
Hm, I do believe you should have properly sealed the sill and sill corners of your windows using flexwrap, blueskin, or other such product such as your sticky window flashing product. Water will easily get behind your plastic corner doo-dads which you used. When it comes to water, you have to do everything in the same manner in which roof shingles function, i.e. everything lower must go under. The bottom of your windows should not be sealed, they must be left open to allow any water/dribbling-moisture/etc. to find a way out and dribble down on top of the house wrap and not become trapped at the bottom of the window. I just don't see how those corner things accomplish anything in this instance. Once the screws are in place, you can remove your shims prior to sprayfoaming.

This is NOT the way to install a nail-on fin window. Bottom should NOT be taped unless you want to have moisture/rot problems. You need to watch some professional install videos and then edit or delete this video.
