DIY No TIll Tower Sweet Potato Harvest | Who Grew It Better? Guten Yardening Zone 5 Gardening Wisconsin
You might be wondering:
How can I grow sweet potatoes in the smallest growing space?
How can I maximize my small growing space?
In this video we document the first round of a game changing sweet potato experiment.
This season we created several DIY vertical gardens from concrete mesh tomato cages. We wrapped one of the towers in burlap and the other in food safe, black plastic.
The medium of these beds is primarily decomposing hay, and so these are modified Ruth Stout vertical gardens.
We then planted sweet potatoes in each vertical garden. We wanted to see which wrapping would help to produce the best sweet potatoes, the black plastic or the burlap.
In this sweet potato harvest 2022 video, our younger gardener in training joins me to harvest sweet potatoes and learn the results of this sweet potato experiment.
It's tower vs. tower!
We hope you enjoy! Let's go Ruth Stout sweet potatoes!

We had a blast out there. She loves sweet potato harvests and has been an amazing help this harvesting season. It definitely makes the harvest that much more fun too. :)

I like the red ones, but that's what I'm used to. When I lived in south Georgia they had to sweetest ones I'd ever had. Yum. I'm so tempted to dig into my containers, but it's still warm here and I want to give them more time.

On the burlap tower I think I would put a smaller wire around the wire as well and mabe across the bottom to keep the voles out. Good job on your experiments.

Thank you! Yes, I think we may try some more hardware cloth like we did on our purple sweet potato bed this season. I think that could be a real difference maker.

We have voles or moles or whatever but I used hardware cloth on the bottom of my raised containers. I think I would warp the entire raised bin with it.

We loved the results that hardware cloth made for our raised bed, and so I think we will be investing in that even more, and so wrapping these beds seems like a potentially simple solution! Thank you. :)

I wonder, what if you double up the burlap to increase the heat? Maybe it would match the plastic?

It was our first harvest ever last week. We planted some in our yard and then some in a raised bed. Unfortunately we had had a cucumber plant and tomato plant in the raised bed prior to planting sweet potatoes and didn't know any better. Ones in the yard were wonderful but the ones in the raised bed were all eaten up with big black holes in them from what I think are cucumber beetles. Does anyone know what they would have been? Is there something else that leaves black holes and is there a way to get rid of them. Is it a matter of rotating the potatoes?

That sap is similar to the gunk that gets on your hands when cleaning tomato plants; wash your hands with a little white vinegar and it should come right off.

Are those voles old enough to survive without their mother ? I wouldn’t want them in my garden either but I don’t know if I could sentence them to death.
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if they will survive, but I placed them elsewhere instead of dispatching them. It's hard because I really dislike their damage, but I also was in a great mood harvesting the sweet potatoes. :D
