Outdoor Swing Seat Series! (Part 1: Making the Seat)
Swing Seat Series: • DIY Outdoor Swing Seat...
In this series I will be building a free standing swing seat and frame from scratch. I will be using treated pine from my local home/garden centre and also all other products such as glue, wood preserver, outdoor paint and hardware will be brought from my local diy shop. So you will be able to pick up all the materials for this project yourself and follow along with the build. I painted the seat with an urban slate (grey) outdoor paint, which looks very classy, the frame work will also be painted the same colour!

Sean Evelegh - Awesome, looking forward to them! I’m just about to start a hallway table build, I went and got the materials from Surrey timbers today! A bit nervous about hand cutting dovetails though as it will be my first time!! 😂🤞

Great swing so far, good color choice. As always your attention to detail is amazing, and your explanations I’m sure are helpful to those who aren’t as versed in woodworking (they help me understand a lot that’s for sure).

The project appearance is brilliantly simple ... only just found your channel ... how did you arrive at 12deg for the frame? My high school trig is very rusty ... why '12' and not '15'? Loved the '1812' filler music ... so refreshing from the usual 'head banger' stuff of other YT videos.

Hi Jules. I'm glad you liked the video. I based the angle on a previous swing seat I had and just replicated that.

I've always found wood from Wickes to be wet through. Did that cause you any issues?
@SeanEvelegh
@SeanEvelegh 4 жыл бұрын
HI mate, yes it was still a bit wet, which makes it heavier as well. It would be a good idea to rough cut all the components and leave it to settle and acclimatise to your workshop.

Hi, I was that impressed with your swing bench that I thought yes that can be my next project. I instantly went in search for the type of metal brackets you had but no luck so far, any idea's? Great video by the way

HI Mick! That's great, I hope you enjoy making it and following the series! I might be difficult to find online, but I would search for swing seat frame, or bench metal brackets etc... you might be able to find something similar in a reclamation yard, if not you can always make an all wooden seat... there's many ideas on google images for wooden swing seats.

Mick Molyneux...if all else fails, go get some old car leaf springs (parts of suspension system on old cars), and use the metal in those, they’re great for this kind of project. You’ll need to heat and bend the steel, but this can be achieved by a good diy’er with a a BBQ and hot coals, a good ball/plain hammer and something (even a nice hard tree-stump) to shape the bends in the metal... When bending metal I also use a flat board on which I mark the profile of the bend, so if doing more than one, I can get the profile of the bends to match as necessary. Other than that a decent metal shop in your area should be able to help you out at not too much cost...👍🏻

HI Sam, for the seat, I used outdoor screws with washers to attach the slats in place. In part 2, I'll talk more about the bolts used for the frame

Failing eBay, salvage or dump finds, you can have the steel parts made by a metal fabricator or a welding shop.

Hey Stuart, they were actually pretty good. I spend time sighting down the length of the board, to see if they're straight. I also look though most of the boards and take my time until i find the right ones!

Why didn't you use a roller to paint the slats? It would have been faster and easier. But am I missing something? As usual, your work is really remarkable, precise, original, and stunning. At any time, you can build me anything you like and I will be happy as a clam at high tide.
@SeanEvelegh
@SeanEvelegh 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching mate, there was sometimes cracks or rough areas where the knots were and a brush helped in those areas. I also find using a roller uses up a lot more paint unnecessarily, and we only had one can so I wanted little waste. Thank you very much for your kind words as-well, I do have an Etsy store 😉
