On my canoe, I have mine spread out 3 ft from the hull ( a distance of at least, half the length of my canoe, across from air blatter on one side to the other blatter on the other side. side). I might add, I made mine with two equally sized air blatters for each side (one located, just above the other, per side). Only one blatter lightly skims the water per side, on a smooth lake. If for some reason, one blatter goes under, there's another blatter of equal value, and size, right above it, to add more stability, if and when it's needed.

best I have seen to date. I have just bought a lifetime kayak and was looking at all types of outriggers. I think though I would use large marine fenders and incorporate your extension tubing idea. Was thinking as well using spring loaded clips instead of a bolt and secure these to the kayak so if I accidentally dropped them they don't end up at the bottom of the ocean.. I also like the idea of bringing the outriggers close to the hull when paddling. Questions: 1) What depth is best to keep the riggers just in the water, 2)what angle should they be to hull (same angle to the hull? Or something different.).

@timhaddon7071
@timhaddon7071 4 жыл бұрын
For the length out from boat I did the max it would go out which is determined by how much of the pipe will fit inside the pipe to secure it close to boat. As for depth I used the water line on the kayak side and tested it a couple of times to determine how long to have the 45 degree elbow.

GREAT vid!! I saw your reply to a commenter saying you needed more flotation. Have you tried adding a couple inches to your verticals that attach to the pods? This would make a big difference. You could try different lengths before cementing them together.

Tim, great idea. I like that you can extend the outriggers since I have a narrow mangrove tunnel to squeeze through. Question. How did you secure the floats to the outrigger pipes?
@timhaddon7071
@timhaddon7071 5 жыл бұрын
Hello John, I put a 90 degree elbow on the pipe and added a connector that was threaded. Then drilled hole slightly smaller than the threaded connection into the float so that is would screw in real snug. The primed around it and used PVC cement to secure.

This is so cool! Tim what are the measurements of the pipes and how did you connect to the middle of the floaters? Thanks! Where did you get the pins (what are they called)?
@timhaddon7071
@timhaddon7071 Жыл бұрын
Hello. You can search the Home Depot site for Security Pins. There should be a number of them you can use. For the floats I just used the largest PVC I could find at Home Depot. For the others I went with 1/2" and 3/4". I cut holes in the floats for tight fit and used cement to seal the connection so water could not enter.
@cooksadventures8748
@cooksadventures8748 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, do you think pressuring the pvc floaters would help for floatation? The back of my kayak sits way too low in the water and the front sits damn near out of the water, so I wanna put a valve stem in the floater and pressurize it to like 30 pounds to lift the back of the kayak up a couple inches. Do you think that would help or is that overkill?
@timhaddon7071

That sounds like a great concept. Just need to seal the pressure in.

Awesome idea. Nice and cheap. What is that strip of metal with the holes in it that goes around the fixed piece of pipe that screws into the kayak called? Can i get it at most hardware stores? I'm guessing you could just use rubber washers as a seal for the screws to keep water out when it rains, etc. Great video and thanks.

Lol you kno what this is not the prettiest but who cares , I'm with you on that. I don't want it permanent. Scotty mount idea plus PVC holders looks sleek but this is very inexpensive and quick to make . Going on the river don't need all this stuff and this set up is very fast to break down or assemble. Great idea . Do they work as they should ? Slow the kayak down much ? Stable standing ?
@timhaddon7071
@timhaddon7071 Жыл бұрын
Hello. Thanks for the comment. It did just ok. It could use some more stability so I would probably find a way to keep compressed air on the floats or wrap extra floaters around them for more stability. The concept is great. Just need more in the floats.

Did you just make it even with the bottom or how did you know how high to make them?
@timhaddon7071
@timhaddon7071 4 жыл бұрын
Without them the water line was just about even with the molded crease on the side of the kayak. So I put the floats to be just under the crease on the kayak knowing that would submerge most of the float and help stabilize.

Having your(shall we call them "PCV air blatters", so close to the hull, may only slightly help prevent tip overs, while standing in your kayak. It depends on both your weight ( and those joining you, and how tall yo stand that has to be factored in. If your a 6 ft. male, then I would spread the air blatters out father away from the hull. The way you have them set, a 275 lb male, could still tip over your kayak, and fall in, by the way you have it set-up. Your height, and weight while standing, will overpower the amount of air that's inside the blatters to prevent you from flipping over, or being tossed out of the kayak. It may work well while sitting down, but once you stand, those home-made pontoons, won't help you as much as they would while sitting. If your a tall male, and have plenty of weight, I'd spread those air blatter's out quite a bit more, so you are more stable while standing.
