Nice router ´, you should think about getting some kind of guard over the cutter. There is a lot of cutter sticking out and if it grabs some bad end grain the body could jump. It happened to me 50 years ago luckily I still have the finger. It happened in a split second when the body got thrown back at me and back into the cutter. Luckily only pulled my fingernail out sideways 90 degrees and the nurse had some new stuff called steritape and manage to put most of the flesh back together (and somehow I didn't loose the fingernail) Maybe some kind of spring holddown in front of the bit would work.

Wow!! That is so impressive! I am super curious how you were able to make those holes with the template on the other side on the bottom. Very impressive! Great job!❤

The template has holes in it that correspond to the holes that need to be cut in the guitar body. The template goes underneath the wood. There is a steel pin that sticks up about 1/8" above the table top. You have to position the template (with the attached wood) so the pin is inside the hole you want to cut on the top side of the guitar body. That pin keeps the cutting bit (called an end mill) exactly where the hole needs to be cut. All you have to do is move the wood around so you cut out the entire area of the hole on the template. That pin keeps you from cutting outside the desired cutting area. That pin is the reason it's called a "pin router."

Is there a particular advantage you're looking for here vs just using a bearing-guided bit on a router table or with a hand router, or even just a bushing and template?

The pin router eliminates errors like accidentally tipping the router a little while you're cutting. This is especially true when routing the neck pocket where you have to use multiple bearings in the bit. The pin router simplifies this and provides a better view of that you're cutting. It's just all around a better tool for the job.

@@k9taxi If tipping is the challenge then I can't see the advantage over a router table. Even for the pockets really - if you're fiddling about either way trying to line it up, I can't see why you wouldn't just start them with a drill for easy location, then you're all set and stable. Each to their own of course, I was just wondering why you'd go to such a length...

@@Phazaar Two reasons for the project: 1) It was a fun challenge to design and build something on the cheap and 2) I plan on using it for more that just woodworking. I designed this with a removable table so I can attach a two axis milling slide for aluminum and mild steel.

Never got around to narrating the video. Been super busy building guitars. I tried recording the video with a cheap Amazon microphone connected to my phone. It worked when I tested the mic. However, when I shot the actual video, no audio recorded. I threw the mic in the trash. I am going to buy a DJI wireless mic setup for Christmas. I never intended these videos for public consumption. Never thought anybody else would be interested. I was surprised to see I have 43 subscribers. I guess if other people are interested in these projects I should get my act together and do a better job of editing. It just about doubles my time to do any project if I video it and perform some minor editing. It's just time consuming. I'm working on a fully edited (more professional) video detailing how I built the pin router and why I made some of the design decisions, mistakes and improvements for the next one.
