I don't know about you but I found it very difficult to work with foam board the first time because nobody mentions how important it is to cut straight up and down from the top paper to the bottom thru the foam. Any slant means one side is a different size than the other & it won't sit squared. My first project I used cheap razor blades and my cuts wobbled all over! There is a definite learning curve to this stuff! Yours looks awesome!

This 7-year-old tutorial is just what I was looking for! I even have all of the materials needed. Thank you so much!! I might make one with two more levels because I have tons of loose tracing paper and an A3 light pad. It would be very convenient to have easy access to it.

Just made this tonight... I'm a high school math teacher and needed a better place to store my colored printer paper in my classroom... So I made all 4 levels divided in the middle. Thank you so much for sharing!!!

I know this is an old tutorial, but I followed it and built myself a custom-sized paper storage unit for the shelf on my printer cart for around $8! Don't use Dollar Tree foam core. I typically don't patronize Hobby Lobby, but their 20X30 foam core sheets are $1.99. I made a 20x14 five-shelf unit with four sheets. One tip, once you core out the slots for the shelves, use the edge of a small scrap of foam core (the perfect size!) to scrape out the remaining foam. That will give you a better fit. Kudos to you for the great tutorial!

Thank you for sharing. This will work great for all my scrapbooking paper, card stock, sheets of felt and loose paper. I have all those items in different places in my apartment lol. I'm definitely going to build this.

Probably the best "floating shelves" video I've seen. Thank you for using tools the rest of us can also use, instead of tools and setups that cost thousands of dollars. 3:21

This is such a great idea, you're the only person that has done this size on YT. I would love to see you put some together for 12x12s😊. Do you think cardboard could work as well if it's doubled up or just thick cardboard? Great idea ! Merry Christmas ⛄ Julie

You. Are. Awesome!💖 And this tutorial is excellent!! I make a lot of DIY storage from cardboard & foam-core( because I'm cheap aka broke😁 & have a crap-ton of delivery boxes😮). You did an amazing job of teaching how to cut the rabbits(or 'channels') for the shelves to rest in. I've always just held them up by basically gluing the "supports" in & just using those. Mostly, because my cutting skills are severely lacking😒 But, I am definitely going to give your method, & fantastic tips, a shot! Ty soooo much for making this tutorial!💖 P.S. I'm sure all you crafty folks know that $tree has those foam-core sheets for $1! They carry poster board too👍 Thx again!

Metal straight edge can be had at Wally World for cheap....That is such an important tool! Use a butterfly touch when cutting foam core...Dollar Tree foam core is not the same quality as paper-based foam core. You can not core-out dollar tree foam core. Being an artist entails strategies and sacrifices just like other professions, Coupons are your friend, I never purchase from the big chains unless I have a coupon or coupon code in my hand or on my phone!

Just wanted to say thanks for this. My problem with bought paper storage systems is that the shelf space is always too tall; so keeping each colour separate would probably need about ten units, using less than an inch of the available height!

If I spent the extra dollar or 2 would it be easier to just cut the 2 inch slats and glued them on instead of making those tiny little cuts? I ask because I know I’m gonna be the one to cut clear through to the other side. Btw, I live in West Columbia. Carrie
@tharp7695 жыл бұрын
That's how I've made mine before. It works quite well! The key, as with this method, is precise measurements. Which I fail at...but my cutting skills are worse. Lol! However, it does work well & saves time. I'm still gonna give her method a shot. Good luck!💖!
@leighwillart13394 жыл бұрын
Hello, fellow Columbian! It may be easier but relying on only the glue to hold the pieces in can be risky if you're planning to store anything heavy. The channels are just for a bit of extra support!

What is the difference between foam core and poster board?
@leighwillart13394 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! Foam core is basically two sheets of poster board with foam sandwiched in-between. Poster board alone doesn't allow for the support that foam core can give, especially if you want to make channel supports like I did in this video.
@MiriamKalson6 жыл бұрын
How did you make the slots on the side pieces ?
@leighwillart13396 жыл бұрын
Miriam Kalson I carefully cut through the first layer of paper with an exact knife and then through the foam without cutting through the second layer of paper. Once you make two cuts you can carve out the chunk to make a space!

if I want one to be 7 inches tall do I need to make it longer for each 3/16th slots as well?

Chloe LaVerne Yes! to make it approximately 7" tall you could make each of the gaps 1.5" high between the slats.

maybe this has been address but first why not use wood or particle board and take the drawers out of your storage you just showed and replace with the board. Or you can just cut the ends off of the drawers and slide the drawers back in. thanks
@leighwillart13397 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan! Not sure what you mean by drawers, but I didn't use wood or particle board for this project because I wanted something that I could make easily without any tools or machinery. I know it won't last forever, but it's still holding up well!
@sc-ez9fz7 жыл бұрын
You showed what you store your paper in prior to building. Your problem was you could not truly see what you had and you could not pullout a sheet easily. Ok now go to that chest of drawers (storage drawers etc) and follow my ideas. cut the ends off or remove the drawers replacing with the board .it would take you one third the effort and will last longer.
@sc-ez9fz7 жыл бұрын
you could use your foam core.
