To kill boredom and to show my kids some fun experiment - we all made a phonograph. This is really amazing device which allows to record and then play the sound. It was invented by Edison.
In my opinion it's really cool science experiment for kids and parents and schools.

That was a phonoautograph. The difference being that phonographs record and play sound, whereas phonoautographs just visualise sound waves and simulate the functions of the human ear.

@raffaeleangeloni9740 Technically, it did record the sound. And there were a number of sound playing devices already. (Player piano, music box, etc.) The phonograph was merely the first technology that could both record audio and play it back.

yeah, the tinfoil phonograph wasn't designed to carve its own grooves it had grooves in the Mandrell so the foil just had to be pushed in by the needle by the vibrations to form the recording so, thank you for showing this it was a great experiment!!

It was a terrible thing to listen to by today's standards, but back in 1877 through the early 20th century people would stand in long lines just to be able to say they heard a "talking machine"! It was something they considered miraculous! It is impossible for us today to understand just how amazing it was to, for the first time in history, be able to record and play back sound.

Awesome experiment! It feels almost like magical, but it's obviously science. Three questions by the way: so, to reproduce what you recorded - what are you exactly doing? That'd be great to understand. Are you turning the cylinder the other way? and also, for each take you had to put new aluminum foil right? It is so interesting! Thank you for sharing, great content!
