If you seal them before painting they will look nice a lot longer. Flex Seal works great. Seal before and after painting if you want to put them outdoors.

YourFavNurseB you probably have seen it too, but just FYI I’ve seen in other vids that you should do a coat of seal inside and outside first, to stop the moisture pushing the paint off the pot eventually!

Lynn Eastcliff I’ve never actually done it but just saw in other videos. This one is helpful! kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZLPfGitd6-Iqck But then also I think we just need to be mindful that it changes how the material interacts with the plants and soil (ie things that are normally recommended to be in terracotta May no longer enjoy it because it won’t work water away from the soil) I’m absolutely no expert, but I hope that helps!

If you're planting directly in the pot, you'll NEED TO SEAL or else the paint will bubble. I've learned the hard way. Should have read people's comments below. Bummer. I did mine solid white and hot glued twine along the collar. I used a braided and slipknot design. They look great.

@@oglington1 I used All Purpose Sealer. I put it on the inside of my pots. I can't remember if I put it on the outside too but I looked up videos to help me figure it out. I believe Martha Stewart has an old video about terracotta pots I watched.

Beautiful! I was wondering about the terra cotta being exposed on the inside. Does it need to be sealed. Will the water from the inside soak the pot and float off the paint on the outside?

I painted a terra cotta pot gray and the outside color of the pot did start to fade and became a white-ish color from the distilled water used. It became awful looking. Next time I’ll put the plant inside a plastic pot, then place in a terra cotta pot to preserve the color and design.

I like the designs and the reasons for the designs, but unfortunately, I don't use terra cotta pots that often. On the other hand, maybe the reason why was because it just looked like a terra cotta pot, and these new looks will make them more appealing !

Terracotta pots are porous and water stains develop on the outside surface of the pots overtime. Don't we need to use a waterproof varnish to seal the paint?

Distilled water helps here.

Not sure if that will help if your concern is about water coming through the pot. If the varnish goes on the outside, it protects the paint against water from the outside.

@RylieDesign Does this type of paint not need a sealer? I’m completely new at this and I want to paint a couple for my indoor plants. I’ve read that they need to be sealed so that the paint doesn’t crack, I am planning on planting my plants directly in the pot so they will get wet when watered. You could use some gloss varnish. It works perfectly for me and my customers have never complained.

I have painted/decorated multiple pots. I find sponging the paint is a great way to avoid brush strokes and it gives a subtle texture look. Of course, some pots look nice with intentional brush strokes as well.

C C but then how does the water wicking fare with the sealant? That’s the main reason I use terra-cotta, so the soil doesn’t stay wet.

Terracotta pots are porous, therefore they soak the moisture..probably the water being soaked might have damaged the paint. I don't think the creator of this video has consideres that. There should have been some sort of glazing must be done before painting and then a sort of varnish to waterproof it so that the paint can last
