I use one micron diamond compound for my leather cutting tools, works quite fast and is cheaper than buying aluminum plates. I have belt grinders for making knives, but past 400 grit it just gets too hard to put a finish on. I made some leather belts and used diamond to put a mirror finish on faster than ever. One micron is 15,000 grit according to the micron grit size chart. 60,000 grit is one half micron. Use a cutting oil on those fine grits. 40 microns is 500 grit.

I wasn't sharpening a knife, but the finest polish I have ever put on a peice of metal was finished with .3 micron aluminum oxide and the results were so flawless I might try to make a setup capable of sharpening knives to that level of polish soon.

Try 0.1 micron diamond compound, 100,000 grit, fairly cheap on Amazon. I find that 1 micron or 15,000 grit is more than sufficient for my leather cutting tools. Diamond works quite fast.

I wandered onto your channel from a woodworking channel to which I subscribe. I really enjoy your videos - excellent presentation, thorough coverage of each topic, be it stone, knife, or in this case, stropping plate. ... With regard to this particular video, the one thing I struggled to understand is why you took aluminum blanks (which are already flat) and hand sanded them, not even using a sanding block or diamond plate with a known flatness? For stropping with 30 micron film or finer, surface flatness is key. It seems to me that you would be better served by just specifying a guaranteed flatness level from your machine shop, something they could easily achieve with a CNC mill. In any case, thank you for putting out such great content on knife sharpening. Keep up the good work!

After reading several comments about stropping on leather, I felt the desire to share my own experience. I was using a piece of leather loaded with the green compound (most probably Chromium Oxide) when stropping the blades of my planes and chisels, then I saw a video on sharpening a plane blade on the youtube channel of Tamar Hannah, a self-taught woodworking girl, and she uses a piece of MDF instead of leather, applying the polishing compound directly on the MDF... And got noticeably better results! It seems that the firmer and flatter surface of the MDF deforms less under the pressure of the edge of the blade, resulting in a less convex geometry on the edge. I do not have a microscope at hand to check if that is true, but the results I got were repeatable, as I kept going between the leather and the MDF, and found the MDF better.

Really interesting take on stropping. I may consider this in the future. Let us know how long they last before they need changing. Looks like simple system once you have it all set up. Using compounds on leather strops requires maintenance. You have to clean the compound off every now and then and re-apply. This may turn people off (even though it's really easy). I made my own strops and they're great for maintaining an edge, strop once a week and barely need to sharpen your knives. The rust eraser has a 1000 uses! I love my rust eraser. Anyone that's interested---I bought some kangaroo tail leather (very thin but toughest leather in the world) and glued it to a couple of pieces of wood. I ended up with 2 double sided strops for around $50 AUD so $38 USD Maybe $45 if you include the glue and wood, but I already had those. Some cheap stropping compound, 3 types, medium to very fine and a plain leather side for finishing. This can make a mirror polish, even after only going up to 1000 grit stone and can get scary sharp. Works on very hard steels too. It's a nice way to pretty up your knives and get a wicked edge. Don't be scared to try things for yourself people :)

When applying film to a flat surface you should start with one end, and lay it down from there, to avoid bending and bubbles. With a rectangular surface like this you could line up two corners, slightly bend the film, and just slowly lay it across the surface. The first adjustment is critical, but it does make it a lot easier to avoid having to take it off to readjust :)
@Nikosi94 жыл бұрын
Or, just peel back just enough of the protector film, position it on one one side/two corners, then slowly pull the protector film off.

@@Burrfection Well, I am following the technique of Tamar Hanna, a self taught woodworking girl that has an excellent woodworking KZbin site and has developed an extraordinary high quality and capability for working with wood in a very short time! Tamar uses a piece of flat MDF, not leather; She applies some green (Chromium oxide) polishing or "stropping" compound directly on the MDF plate, and goes stropping. It seems that the advantage of using the comparatively hard surface of MDF, is that it tends to DEFORM LESS than the relatively soft leather, and that helps to avoid a too-convex apex on the polished edge. So far, I seem to achieve better results than using my piece of stropping leather that I bought at Amazon, and that was somewhat expensive for what it really is.
@alfredomarquez9777 Жыл бұрын
@@jasonroets9906 I followed the technique used by Tamar Hannah in her youTube channel, and used a piece of MDF instead of my Amazon bought leather strop... Surprise: it worked better!. The MDF piece is quite flat, and firmer than any leather, so it works better due to less deformation under the pressure of the edge under stropping, getting the edge less convex.

actually it's 120,000 because 12,000 is equal to 1.0 micron simple math you divide 12,000 by micron percentage you wan't to find your rated grit/mesh mesh and grit is the same number simply the answer is how many hole/abrasive particles can fit in 1 square inch
@haylspa6 жыл бұрын
it's actually 12,000 per micron, industrial standard if you are buying emulsion compounds they are over-rating there products but be standard they are suppose to rate it by the largest particles in the compound not the smallest!! over rating is a habit the cheaper compounds do! for example most of your 12,000 true Japanese water stones rate there stones 12,000grit 1.0micron a guy on here on youtube has been trying to rate his emulsion/stropping compound as 160,000 0.1micron which is a rating of 16,000 per micron, any ways pointing being look up the standard and not what just any company throws at you! this is very important now at days because there is alot of products on the market now at days that have way over rated specs then what they really are more noted in this is cree led flashlights and batteries!!! Naniwa uses the actually numbers from there smallest particles they use the 12,000 to 1.0micron math formula! another example I am a micro farmer don't have every thing posted on my channel off track any ways point being I buy fabric pots from china hears an example of there over rating there two gallon size rated bags are actually one gallon! quite literally one gallon and there 3 gallons are actually two gallons, another kick to the nuts is there five gallon rated bags are actually three gallons etc, not joking this is the actual specs being off that bad :( flashlights for example are so over rated it would put the most talented con-artist whip out there pen to take not's for fear of getting put out of Business, don't even get me started on the batteries (to late!) they actually have massively overated specs stamped right on the batteries from the manufactures!!! specs the most advance batteries on the market can't touch with a ten foot (1,000ft) pole! I mean absolute shit batteries (10mah rated at like 3,000mah!!!) if you are buying from a company that is saying 1.0micron is rated above 12,000grit they are already falsifying the information there giving you and you might want to avoid there products not buy into it

great video and concept, but you need to realize using your fingers and hand when sanding doesnt sand true or straight, as your fingers put different pressures on it. always use a sanding block. and ya, apply the paper that is slightly larger than the block then use the razor against the block and trim it up to fit with the surface facing up and the blade at a slight angle to put a angle on the edge and it will fit perfectly.

I'd use a piece of brown cardboard for super fine stropping. If not I have 1/4 micron paste, 1/2 & 6 micron pastes for different needs/results. All on blocks of aluminum with leather. Realize that a hand sharpened blade on a whet stone is not going to have a truly flat primary bevel. It will be convex to a point. (depending on the sharpeners skill). A truly flat & thin, with no give to the substrate stropping surface won't cover all the primary bevel. IMO
