Why do people always make such tiny batches? I dump in the whole box of each ingredient, 3 bars of the grated soap, 1 container of knock off Oxi Clean and a bottle of those sent beads (optional). I line a 5 gal bucket with a black contractors trash bag, because they are really thick, dump in ALL of the ingredients. Then I wad up the top of the bag, pull it out of the bucket and shake and manipulate the bag until it's mixed. This way I don't have to breath in all the powder that would of been in the air. Then I use Rubbermaid type Cereal containers to put it in. I like these because it's got a wide mouth flip top so I can get my hand in there to scoop out a tablespoon and I leave the scoop in there, Extra goes back in the 5 gal bucket with a lid until I have to refill the cereal box. Anyway, no measuring, I spent $28.00, 5 gal.bucket was about 3/4 full, and it lasts a long time. I read it's about a nickle a load. And it works!

+vicki breitmayer wow. I wish I had known this when my kids were young. Now it's just me all by my lonesome so I don't use hardly any detergent anymore. I think I will pass this on to my daughter and sons! Great thing!!! Thanks for sharing!

Your welcome! When I make it, I fill the empty Oxy container and send it to my sister. Maybe your kids will send you some!

I pinned this the other day and totally forgot to get the zote yesterday. The Zote is what my grandma in Mexico would use to wash clothes (by hand) I know using it will bring back memories of her. Thanks for sharing!

I like to make big batches and use one bar Zote and one bar Fels Naptha. I also add 1/2 cup baking soda to help deodorize my laundry. The mixture of the Zote and Fels Naptha smell amazing I must say. And its pretty lol My last batch I added the Purex Crystals and it's nice too. Just experiment until you find what works for you. I think this works as good if not better than any commercial detergent I have ever purchased.

Zote also comes in flakes at Walmart. No grating. Nice.

I take my bar of soap and cube it up then place all of it in my Ninja blender and get the same result. So I get to skip grating it down. :) Thanks for sharing.

I have made it both ways I like the powder best less to mess with. I put the whole bar of Zote pink and the soda wash & borax but I have never thought to put oxy clean in it . I'm going to try that next time I make it . Thanks Rose

Hi, you can cut your Zote soap into chunks and use the food processor to turn it into a powder. No need to grate it.

If I'm going to all the trouble to make my own soap I will make my own scent with essential oils. Those factory scented crystals are a neurotoxin including all the plug in stuff car scents etc.

I tried the Purex crystals in mine. The soap smelled great, but I couldn't smell it on the clothes after they were washed though. So, I just add grapefruit or lemongrass essential oil (about a half ounce) to a double batch of powder soap.

I just made this same laundry detergent the other day. Only my recipe was for a HUGE batch. I really appreciate the smaller recipe. However, I do add the Purex crystals to mine. So, I'm curious how much of the crystals your Mom adds to her mix if she is making this smaller batch. Mixing that big batch was a bear, my husband had to take a really long drill bit and duct tape a spatula to it and mix it for me!!! Thanks again for your tutorial!

Hello, Love your vlogs. Want to try this soon. Was wondering how much of the Purex Crystals your mom adds for the same amount you make? Thanks for sharing!

Put the soap in the microwave for a few seconds... It'll get powdery. Easier than shredding.

Thank you SO much for sharing this! I have three daughters (15, 12 and 7) I do at least 2 loads of laundry a day! (usually more) Laundry det. is one of my biggest cost of my grocery budget. I have a question, Is your food processor a dedicated for chemicals and not for food, OR do you still use it for food items? I wold be worried that the soap smell would not get out of the plastic. I have a snapware 1/2 gal pitcher that I had originally used to for powder laundry det. I not longer use it for laundry and thought I can use it for juice. I have ran that thing in ever load of my dishwasher for over a year and it still reaks of laundry floral soap. YUCK! Valerie
@jewellm6110 жыл бұрын
Val, I don't use a food processer to make laundry soap, but I would advise anyone against using theirs to shred soap with. I hate the taste of soap. I don't care how much you clean utensils, the soapy taste nevers goes away. Unless you don't mind using a cheese grater, settle for a used one and use it just for making laundry soap. Don't mess up your expensive food processer. Sorry, but you might want to get a new one and keep the other for making soap.

can you tell me where to buy zote and borax powder? amazon is giving it for 11$ is it cheaper?
@PearlsBeautychannel9 жыл бұрын
The zote is only 1$ at Walmart or a Mexican supermarket , and borax is at least 4$ at Walmart :)

at Walmart the zote soap is 99cent and the borax is 3dollars

I heard that Borax is not really a good thing to put in for laundry detergent. What do you think about it? You think I can just skip the Borax in the DIY laundry detergent and still make do a good cleaning on my clothing with the remaining recipe?
@Tinkerbell313268 жыл бұрын
I was concerned about borax too. I heard that it can impair the reproductive system in boys. I have seen others leave it out and they said it still cleaned. I think someone used Epsom salt but I have to double check on that.
@Qwfani7 жыл бұрын
really?

Patty Oh my. Do you know what Epsom salt is? Do you know what makes water hard? Time to learn!!!
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt5 жыл бұрын
L L It’s just a water softener. Sounds like you fell for the internet madness about it’s being a huuuuge health risk. Ha. Funny.
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt5 жыл бұрын
Patty Epsom salt: makes water hard. You want soft wash water. Nothing’s wrong with borax. Less toxic than table salt.

Its just soap and washes out easily if you don't have a dedicated one. I was lucky and found one at a yard sale really cheap to use for making soap.

Thanks for sharing i heard a lady at my job which i work at home depot for these ingredients. She told me that she was making her own laundry soap. I live in puerto rico so let me tell you it was a mission to find everything. You can usually find everything at a superwalmart. I have to say its either borax or washing soda that seems to be harder to find for ppl. But check in your grocery stores they usually carry almost everything. I also add crystals to my clothes but also now make my own using epson salt and few drops of essintial oils. Let me know if any one has tried this and what you think.
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt5 жыл бұрын
Ha. Epsom salt hardens water, produces soap scum. No. Don’t use it!

I have not but I had thought about it. I used liquid for it before I started making my own but I just don't like the gel ones that I have seen. I know they say shake it up but I don't like the look. Its my OCD.
